Theses and Dissertations

Diabetes Mellitus is a major health problem for Native Americans. There has been an increase in the prevalence rate of Type 2 diabetes among this population. The increase in Type 2 diabetes has been attributed to major lifestyle changes such as decreased physical activity and a diet high in fats. The number of diagnosed patients with diabetes has almost doubled over a ten-year period on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation.

The purpose of this study was to assess the attitudes and behaviors of Native American patients with diabetes and their relationship to patients' seeking health care services. The variables studied …

Telework And Work Attitudes: The Relationship Between Telecommuting And Employee Job Satisfaction, Organizational Commitment, Perceived Organizational Support, And Perceived Co-Worker Support, Erica Israelson Desrosiers

Open Access Dissertations

The present study investigates the relationship between employee telework and work attitudes, including job satisfaction, organizational commitment, perceived organizational support, and perceived co-worker support. A web-based questionnaire was distributed to employees at five organizations. Surveys were completed by 1,350 employees. A positive relationship was predicted between telework and overall job satisfaction, as mediated by perceived autonomy. Further, moderating effects of job level were predicted for the above relationships. A negative relationship was predicted between telework and perceived co-worker support, moderated by task interdependence. It was also predicted that teleworkers would report higher levels of affective commitment, and that this relationship …

Two Studies Of Mixtec Languages, Inga Mckendry Dec 2001

Two Studies Of Mixtec Languages, Inga Mckendry

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis consists of two independent papers and a text. One paper is centered on Mixtec languages as a whole, the other paper and the text present the variety of Mixtec spoken in the southeastern portion of the district of Nochixtlán, Oaxaca, Mexico.

The first paper builds on work published by Stephen A. Marlett in which it is posited that nasalization is a feature of the morpheme rather than the syllable. Data not included in Marlett's study, which corroborates his findings, are presented. Also in the light of these data, modifications to his analysis are suggested. This paper also presents …

Does Internet Gambling Strengthen The U.S. Economy? Don't Bet On It, Ryan D. Hammer Dec 2001

Does Internet Gambling Strengthen The U.S. Economy? Don't Bet On It, Ryan D. Hammer

Federal Communications Law Journal

Commercial gambling in the United States is a mammoth industry. In the past few decades, the United States developed from a country with few gambling options to one permitting some form of legalized gambling in almost every state. Presently, a new wave of technology affects this industry. Legislators and regulators must deal with the phenomenon of Internet gambling. This Note asserts that Internet gambling must be curbed to lessen its negative impact on the American economy. Many state and local governments are dependent on tax revenues associated with traditional forms of gambling. Internet gambling not only deprives the economy of …

A Tale Of Three Cities: “Diverse And Antagonistic” Information In Situations Of Local Newspaper/Broadcast Cross-Ownership, David Pritchard Dec 2001

A Tale Of Three Cities: “Diverse And Antagonistic” Information In Situations Of Local Newspaper/Broadcast Cross-Ownership, David Pritchard

Federal Communications Law Journal

For more than half a century, a desire for "diverse and antagonistic sources" has been a fundamental principle of communications policy in the United States. Many question, however, whether current FCC policies intended to foster diversity of news and views in the content of the mass media actually do so. Nowhere is this issue raised more starkly than with respect to the Commission's controversial 1975 rule that prohibited the common ownership of a daily newspaper and a broadcast station in the same market. This Article examines the results of a study of diversity of information and viewpoints about the 2000 …

An Uphill Battle: The Difficulty Of Deterring And Detecting Perpetrators Of Internet Stock Fraud, Byron D. Hittle Dec 2001

An Uphill Battle: The Difficulty Of Deterring And Detecting Perpetrators Of Internet Stock Fraud, Byron D. Hittle

Federal Communications Law Journal

This Note argues that because of the limited resources of the SEC, the demanding requirements to prove misrepresentation, the current lack of cooperation between federal and state securities regulators, and a perverse admiration for fraud masterminds, illegal stock price manipulators will continue to profit from unsuspecting investors. Various measures to curb Internet fraud, however, are currently being pondered by industry experts. Among the most effective and realistic are, in order: increasing investor education and awareness, increasing the SEC's "firepower," increasing penalties and jail time for offenders, furthering coordination of federal and state efforts, and creating a "seal of approval" for …

Current Export Policies: Trick Or Treat?, David R. Oliver Jr. Dec 2001

Current Export Policies: Trick Or Treat?, David R. Oliver Jr.

Defense Horizons

Any discussion of export controls needs some context. How did the current system evolve? What is it intended to protect? More than two decades ago, during the height of the Cold War, a well-placed spy told us that more than 5,000 Soviet war systems depended on U.S.-made parts. To throw sand in the communist machine, Richard Perle, then in the Reagan administration, conceived of a system of export control licenses, with accompanying stiff financial and jail penalties, to stop American companies from exporting anything that might conceivably be of technological value to the Soviets. A bureaucracy of hundreds of people …

Dial 911 And Report A Congressional Empty Promise: The Wireless Communications And Public Safety Act Of 1999, Peter P. Ten Eyck Dec 2001

Dial 911 And Report A Congressional Empty Promise: The Wireless Communications And Public Safety Act Of 1999, Peter P. Ten Eyck

Federal Communications Law Journal

Designed to promote the prompt deployment of a seamless emergency services infrastructure to meet the nation's safety needs, the 911 Act not only instructs the FCC to assign the abbreviated dialing code 911 for use as the universal emergency telephone number, but also directs the Commission to establish appropriate transition periods for compliance in areas without 911 service. Furthermore, the 911 Act supports individual states' efforts to develop comprehensive emergency communications. Although improving the 911 system and saving lives by developing an end-to-end emergency communications network are commendable goals, this Note argues that the anemic 911 Act is an important …

The Persistence Of The Dirigiste Model: Wireless Spectrum Allocation In Europe, À La Francaise., Russell Carlberg Dec 2001

The Persistence Of The Dirigiste Model: Wireless Spectrum Allocation In Europe, À La Francaise., Russell Carlberg

Federal Communications Law Journal

This Note examines spectrum allocation for 3G mobile wireless networks in Europe in light of larger EC telecommunications and competition policies. The European Commission has allowed each member state to allocate spectrum to firms in two ways: (1) by the free market auction; and (2) by the "beauty pageant" method by which firms submit detailed proposals to the government, and government bureaucrats make the final selections. This Note focuses on France as the prime example of the beauty pageant method, and argues that, despite the "excesses" of the prices of spectrum on the free market auctions, the beauty pageant method …

The Private Workplace And The Proposed “Notice Of Electronic Monitoring Act”: Is “Notice” Enough?, Nathan Watson Dec 2001

The Private Workplace And The Proposed “Notice Of Electronic Monitoring Act”: Is “Notice” Enough?, Nathan Watson

Federal Communications Law Journal

On July 20, 2000, an interesting mix of federal legislators proposed legislation that would affect monitoring of employee communications and computer usage in the workplace. Had it passed, NEMA would have required employers to notify their employees if they wished to conduct surveillance of their employees' electronic mail ("e-mail") or other electronic communications. Employer groups succeeded in convincing the Judiciary Committee to pull the bill from further consideration, citing a potential increase in litigation and more work for human resources professionals. This Note argues that NEMA should be adopted, since it would improve the current state of affairs relating to …

Septum Formation In Aspergillus Nidulans, Steven D. Harris Dec 2001

Septum Formation In Aspergillus Nidulans, Steven D. Harris

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Filamentous fungi form multicellular hyphae that are partitioned by septa. In A. nidulans, septum formation requires the assembly of a septal band following the completion of mitosis. Recent observations show that this band is a dynamic structure composed of actin, a septin and a formin. In addition, assembly is dependent upon a conserved protein kinase cascade that regulates mitotic exit and septation in yeast. Hyphal differentiation may reflect the regulation of this cascade by cyclin-dependent kinase activity. In this review, the dynamics and regulation underlying the assembly of the septal band are discussed.

Expenditure Control And Traditional Budgets: Comparing Two Implementations, Angela Lauria Gunnink Dec 2001

Expenditure Control And Traditional Budgets: Comparing Two Implementations, Angela Lauria Gunnink

Masters Theses

My research will entail examining the budget processes of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Fairfield, California. The difference between these two cities and their budgets is that Fairfield implemented an expenditure control budget, and Kalamazoo operates with a traditional budget. The purpose of this Master’s Thesis is to compare and contrast Fairfield's performance with their expenditure control budget to Kalamazoo, a city of approximately the same size in terms of population, square mileage, and local governance as Fairfield, but operates with a traditional city budget.

This study revisits the empirical claims made by Osborne and Gaebler (1992), which illustrates Fairfield, California as …

Mindful Virtue, Mindful Reverence, Ursula Goodenough, Paul Woodruff Dec 2001

Mindful Virtue, Mindful Reverence, Ursula Goodenough, Paul Woodruff

Biology Faculty Research

How does one talk about moral thought and moral action as a religious naturalist? We explore this question by considering two human capacities: the capacity for mindfulness, and the capacity for virtue. We suggest that mindfulness is deeply enhanced by an understanding of the scientific worldview and that the four cardinal virtues—courage, fairmindedness, humaneness, and reverence—are rendered coherent by mindful reflection. We focus on the concept of mindful reverence and propose that the mindful reverence elicited by the evolutionary narrative is at the heart of religious naturalism. Religious education, we suggest, entails the cultivation of mindful virtue, in ourselves and …

Robust Decentralized Control Of Power Systems Through Excitation Systems And Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitors, Lingling Fan Dec 2001

Robust Decentralized Control Of Power Systems Through Excitation Systems And Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitors, Lingling Fan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this work is robust decentralized control of power systems through excitation systems and Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitors (TCSC). Hence the dissertation consists of two parts. In the first part an algorithm for the design of nonlinear decentralized excitation control is developed based on a feedback linearization technique. Feedback linearization technique is applied in excitation control of each generator to obtain an interconnected system where subsystems have linear system matrices and interconnections are represented by nonlinear terms. Different ways of achieving decentralization are investigated: (1) linear robust control combined with observer decoupled state space; (2) disturbance accommodation control. …

Fast Focal Length Solution In Partial Panoramic Image Stitching, William A. Barrett, Kirk L. Duffin Dec 2001

Fast Focal Length Solution In Partial Panoramic Image Stitching, William A. Barrett, Kirk L. Duffin

Faculty Publications

Accurate estimation of effective camera focal length is crucial to the success of panoramic image stitching. Fast techniques for estimating the focal length exist, but are dependent upon a close initial approximation or the existence of a full circle panoramic image sequence. Numerical solutions of the focal length demonstrate strong coupling between the focal length and the angles used to position each component image about the common spherical center. This paper demonstrates that parameterizing panoramic image positions using spherical arc length instead of angles effectively decouples the focal length Ji.om the image position. This new parameterization does not require an …

Connecting Personal Biography And Social History: Women Casino Workers And The Global Economy, Jill B. Jones, Susan Chandler Dec 2001

Connecting Personal Biography And Social History: Women Casino Workers And The Global Economy, Jill B. Jones, Susan Chandler

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Economic globalization has been described as the "most fundamental redesign of the planet's political and economic arrangements since as least the industrial revolution" (Mander, 1996). This article explores its implications in the lives of a group of women casino workers. Based on a qualitative study in which data were collected from key informants, focus groups of community leaders and professionals, and in-depth interviews with women casino workers themselves, the study attempts, in the spirit of C. Wright Mills (1959) and social work's tradition of person-in-environment, to connect "the patterns of [individual] lives and the course of world history."

The Analysis Of Selective Information Processing And Neuropsychological Functioning In Individuals At-Risk For Eating Disorders: The Use Of A Pictorial Adaptation To The Stroop Paradigm, Using Print Media Advertisements, Kristine L. Lokken

Theses and Dissertations

There is evidence that women with bulimic symptoms are characteristically impulsive and have difficulty inhibiting various behaviors. Neuropsychological profiles of women with bulimic symptoms show patterns of impulsivity, inefficient problem solving ability, and an inability to inhibit irrelevant information. Women with bulimic symptoms also express substantially greater acceptance and internalization of sociocultural mores of thinness, and are more vulnerable to negative influence from laboratory exposure to stimuli representing “thin ideal” stereotypes. The present study examined a possible common link between the characterological and neuropsychological features of women with bulimic symptoms and their susceptibility to negative influence from mass media representations …
