Impact Of A Historical Translocation On Populations Of White-Tailed Deer Odocoileus Virginianus, Nathan Kendall Boddie Aug 2001

Impact Of A Historical Translocation On Populations Of White-Tailed Deer Odocoileus Virginianus, Nathan Kendall Boddie

Theses and Dissertations

Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was used to study the impact of a historical translocation event on populations of white-tailed deer in Georgia. The technique may also serve as a model by which management practices for other rare species can be studied. Populations from an original translocation source in Wisconsin, another Wisconsin population, and three populations in Georgia were sampled during management hunts. RAPD PCR was used to produce a genetic fingerprint for individuals of each population. Resulting band data were analyzed using PHYLIP genetic analysis software. A consensus tree of 100 bootstrapped replicates showed significant similarity between Georgia …

Accessible Pareto-Improvements: Using Market Information To Reform Inefficiencies, Michael Mandler Aug 2001

Accessible Pareto-Improvements: Using Market Information To Reform Inefficiencies, Michael Mandler

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study Pareto improvements whose implementation requires knowledge of only market prices and traded quantities, not utility and demand functions. Quantity stabilization gives agents the right to repeat the net trades they previously conducted, but requires policymakers to have records of those trades. While reasonable in some partial equilibrium contexts, such an assumption is implausible in general equilibrium. To diminish informational requirements further, we also consider price stabilization, which holds constant the relative prices that consumers face. Although price stabilizations do not achieve first-best efficiency, they lead to Pareto-improvements and production efficiency. Moreover, the production efficiency advantage persists under price …

The Effects Of Reform Mathematics Curriculum On Student Achievement, Mark Roger Brown

Masters Theses

Middle school mathematics instruction is in need of reform. In response to this call for reform, school districts across the country are adopting curriculum based on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards.

This thesis studies the impact of the use of a reform curriculum on student achievement. The study looks at two districts in Western Michigan, one of which uses a reform curriculum and one that uses a traditional curriculum. The study compares the results of the districts on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program mathematics assessment to determine if students using the reformed curriculum materials scored significantly higher …

Attitudes Of Male Athletes In Their Last Year Of Eligibility In Division Ii College Athletics And The Relation To Their Academic Success, Brian Paul Bauer

Masters Theses

This study examined male college student athletes in their final year of eligibility and the relation to their academic success. The purpose was to find out if student athletes who plan on participating in professional athletics are relinquishing their academic responsibilities in college. Three male student athletes, who were finished with their last year of eligibility at a Division II institution, were interviewed. The cumulative grade point averages of each of the participants were viewed and compared to the statements given during the interviews. Results of the study were compared to the literature found.

Hydrogen-Induced Embrittlement Of Candidate Target Materials For Applications In Spallation-Neutron-Target Systems, Brendan O'Toole, Ajit K. Roy

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The purpose of this project is to evaluate the effect of hydrogen on cracking of candidate target materials for applications in spallation-neutron-target (SNT) systems such as accelerator production of tritium (APT) and accelerator transmutation of waste (ATW). The test materials will undergo appropriate thermal treatments prior to being hydrogen-charged by potentiostatic cathodic polarization technique in a simulated aqueous environment at different temperatures of interest. The specimens, upon completion of testing, will be metallographically examined. Further, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) will be used to determine the extent and nature of cracking in the specimens tested. The thrust of the proposed …

Dissecting Common Ground: Examining An Instance Of Reference Repair, Timothy Koschmann, Curtis Lebaron, Charles Goodwin, Paul Feltovich Aug 2001

Dissecting Common Ground: Examining An Instance Of Reference Repair, Timothy Koschmann, Curtis Lebaron, Charles Goodwin, Paul Feltovich

Conference Proceedings

How participants to a joint activity come to develop a shared or mutual understanding of what they are perceiving has long been a problematic issue for philosophers, sociologists, and linguists. We examine the abstract model proposed by Clark and Marshall (1981) whereby speakers and hearers construct mutual knowledge and by which discrepancies in definite reference are repaired. We focus in particular on forms of demonstrative reference that depend upon physical co-presence. We examine an attested example of reference repair in the operating room of a teaching hospital. It involves learning to recognize pertinent structures within endoscopic surgeries, that is surgeries …

Going To Nowhere : Narratives Of Patagonian Exploration, Mark W. Bell Aug 2001

Going To Nowhere : Narratives Of Patagonian Exploration, Mark W. Bell

Master's Theses

Since its discovery on Magellan's circumnavigation, Patagonia has been treated differently than any other region in the world. Effectively, Patagonia has been left empty or vacated by the North. But this emptiness and blankness have compulsively attracted curious travel writers who have filled the emptiness of Patagonia with self-reflexive projections. From Charles Darwin and W.H. Hudson to Bruce Chatwin and Paul Theroux, Northern commentators have found in Patagonia a landscape that accommodates their desire for self-reflexivity and self-consciousness. Thus, Patagonia has been simultaneously filled and evacuated by the Northern mind. As a result, Patagonia has become increasingly about the self …

The Hormesis Challenge For Environmental Health Regulators, Michael S. Baram Aug 2001

The Hormesis Challenge For Environmental Health Regulators, Michael S. Baram

Faculty Scholarship

The hormesis hypothesis provides that human, animal or plant exposure to a low external dose of a hazardous chemical substance or physical agent may have beneficial health outcomes'. For example, human exposure to a precisely defined, low external dose of a carcinogenic pollutant in the workplace or ambient environment may lead to an internal dose or concentration, which stimulates a dormant defense mechanism that inhibits the growth of tumors.

Livelock Avoidance For Meta-Schedulers, Mark J. Clement, John Jardine, Quinn O. Snell Aug 2001

Livelock Avoidance For Meta-Schedulers, Mark J. Clement, John Jardine, Quinn O. Snell

Faculty Publications

Meta-scheduling, a process which allows a user to schedule a job across multiple sites, has a potential for livelock. Current systems avoid livelock by locking down resources at multiple sites and allowing a metascheduler to control the resources during the lock down period or by limiting job size to that which will fit on one site. The former approach leads to poor utilization; the later poses limitations on job size. This research uses BYU's Meta-scheduler (YMS) which allows jobs to be scheduled across multiple sites without the need for locking down the nodes. YMS avoids livelock through exponential back-off This …

Certainty Thwarted: Broad Waiver Versus Narrow Waiver Of The Psychotherapist-Patient Privilege After Jaffee V. Redmond, Ellen E. Mcdonnell Aug 2001

Certainty Thwarted: Broad Waiver Versus Narrow Waiver Of The Psychotherapist-Patient Privilege After Jaffee V. Redmond, Ellen E. Mcdonnell

UC Law Journal

This Note interprets the federal court split regarding waiver of the psychotherapist-patient privilege created in the aftermath of Jaffe v. Redmond. As Jaffe's landmark holding ages, case law addressing the issue of waiver in this context becomes progressively polarized. Some post-Jaffe rulings insist that a plaintiff must place privileged information at issue during trial in order to waive the privilege. Still others stubbornly hold that a plaintiff merely asserting a claim for emotional damages waives the privilege. Scholars have given little attention to this inconsistency; it is imperative, however, that the two schools be unified. Traditional views should be modernized …

A Heat-Shock-Activated Cdna Encoding Gaga Factor Rescues Some Lethal Mutations In The Drosophila Melanogaster Trithorax-Like Gene, H Granok, B Leibovitch, Sarah C.R. Elgin Aug 2001

A Heat-Shock-Activated Cdna Encoding Gaga Factor Rescues Some Lethal Mutations In The Drosophila Melanogaster Trithorax-Like Gene, H Granok, B Leibovitch, Sarah C.R. Elgin

Biology Faculty Research

GAGA factor is an important chromosomal protein involved in establishing specific nucleosome arrays and in regulating gene transcription in Drosophila melanogaster. We developed a transgenic system for controlled heat-shock-dependent overexpression of the GAGA factor 519 amino acid isoform (GAGA-519) in vivo. Efficient production of stable protein from these transgenes provided genetic rescue of a hypomorphic Trithorax-like (Trl) lethal allele to adulthood. Nevertheless, supplemental GAGA-519 did not suppress position effect variegation (PEV), a phenomenon commonly used to measure dosage effects of chromosomal proteins, nor did it rescue other lethal alleles of Trl. The results suggest requirements for the additional isoforms of …

On The School Board's Hit List: Community Involvement In Protecting The First And Fourth Amendment Rights Of Public School Students, Patrick Richard Mckinney Ii Aug 2001

On The School Board's Hit List: Community Involvement In Protecting The First And Fourth Amendment Rights Of Public School Students, Patrick Richard Mckinney Ii

UC Law Journal

This Note examines public school students' Constitutional rights to due process, freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures, and freedom of speech in light of the numerous school shootings that have taken place nationwide during the past few years. It argues that Supreme Court stare decisis has gradually diminished student rights, effectively impeding students' ability to seek remedy for their Constitutional injuries in a court of law. Moreover, school administrators have begun implementing policies, such as zerotolerance, that inherently tend to cause infringement of student rights. Although safety in schools is a legitimate state interest, student rights do not need to …

Women's Experiences With Chronic Heart Failure, Denise M. Boren Phd, Msn, Cns Aug 2001

Women's Experiences With Chronic Heart Failure, Denise M. Boren Phd, Msn, Cns

Dissertations

Nationwide, approximately 4.1 million Americans suffer from chronic heart failure accounting for estimated direct and indirect costs of over $21 billion spent annually for health care. The incidence of heart failure has doubled each decade since the 1940's and slightly more men were inflicted with the illness. This trend changed three years ago, with a decline in the overall incidence of heart failure and a slight predominance of the illness in women rather than men. The incidence of this condition was reduced in males nearly three times that of females. Women survive longer after diagnosis, however they are hospitalized more, …

Therapeutic Alliance: Development, Evaluation, And Application Of The Kim Alliance Scale, Son Chae Kim Phd, Msn, Fnp, Rn

Dissertations

The quality of therapeutic alliance between the patient and healthcare provider is a pivotal contributing factor toward optimal healthcare in the current context of rising healthcare costs, shorter hospital stays, and patient's rights. The availability of a well-designed and sound therapeutic alliance instrument can provide understanding and insight into improving the quality of healthcare. The purpose of this study was to develop a reliable and valid therapeutic alliance instrument, to evaluate its psychometric properties, and to explore its usefulness in predicting patient satisfaction. The retroductive triangulation method provided a framework for the development of the instrument, the Kim Alliance Scale …

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The primary objectives of this study were to determine patterns of traffic flow and develop traffic growth rates by traffic composition and highway type for Kentucky’s system of highways. Additional subtasks included the following: 1) a literature search to determine if there were new procedures being used to more accurately represent traffic growth rates, 2) development of a random sampling procedure for collecting traffic count data on local roads and streets, 3) prediction of vehicle miles traveled based on socioeconomic data, 4) development of a procedure for explaining the relationship and magnitude of traffic volumes on routes functionally classified as …

Colorado Professionals' Concerns, Abilities, And Needs For Land Use Planning, Andrew Seidl Aug 2001

Colorado Professionals' Concerns, Abilities, And Needs For Land Use Planning, Andrew Seidl

Journal of Extension

Colorado professionals with agriculture and natural resource managing responsibilities were surveyed on issues of growth. Their greatest concerns were water quality, water quantity, and agricultural profitability. Of least concern were large lot, low-density development, affordable housing, and forestland conversion. Respondents reported the greatest knowledge of fee simple land purchases, zoning, and conservation easements, and the least knowledge of water banking or trusts, "bargain" lands sales, and moratoria. They indicated the greatest interest in an overview of land management tools, conservation easements, and public-private partnerships, and the least interest in educational programming related to moratoria, development timing, and housing land trusts.
