gained widespread acceptance in the US in the last two decades or so. With the globalisation of capital markets, intensification of competition, and massive privatisation initiatives, shareholder value is gaining the attention of executives all over the world, including India. The interest in value creation has been stimulated by several developments:

Labyrinths: Peculiarities Of Industrial Marketing In India, V Kishore Kumar

IIMB Management Review

A few years ago, the Marketing Director of Lube-Alloy1, an American company specializing in lubricants, visited India. His objective — was to get an order for a special lubricant developed by his company for heavy earth moving machinery. For one month, he shuttled between offices of machinery manufacturers, headquarters of mining companies, their subsidiaries, mining projects, offices of oil companies and government offices. A month after he set foot in India, he hadn’t obtained even a trial order for his lubricant.

What Is Eva?, Joel Stern

IIMB Management Review

There is no way to measure your performance contemporaneously, period by period. The way people try to incentivize net present value is by using stock options or restricted shares or something like that. But we have taken net present value, which is what the accountants call a stock concept, and converted it into a flow concept, one that can be measured contemporaneously year-by-year. We have put the incentives and the tools in place, to reinforce that. So on acquisitions, for example, you will not be the one to drop out of the bidding contest. I will show you how we …

Linking Remote-Sensing Estimates Of Land Cover And Census Statistics On Land Use To Produce Maps Of Land Use Of The Conterminous United States, George C. Hurtt, Lynn Rosentrater, Steve Frolking, B Moore Sep 2001

Linking Remote-Sensing Estimates Of Land Cover And Census Statistics On Land Use To Produce Maps Of Land Use Of The Conterminous United States, George C. Hurtt, Lynn Rosentrater, Steve Frolking, B Moore

Earth Sciences

Human use of the land has a large effect on the structure of terrestrial ecosystems and the dynamics of biogeochemical cycles. For this reason, terrestrial ecosystem and biogeochemistry models require moderate resolution (e.g., ≤0.5°) information on land use in order to make realistic predictions. Few such data sets currently exist. To create a land use data set of sufficient resolution, we developed models relating land cover data derived from optical remote sensing and a census database on land use for the conterminous United States. The land cover product used was from the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme DISCover global product, derived from …

Style Matters: Applying--Egads!--Theory To Documentary Editing, Tracy Duvall Sep 2001

Style Matters: Applying--Egads!--Theory To Documentary Editing, Tracy Duvall

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Historical editors rarely cite theory to justify particular editorial practices. Instead, they usually make appeals to common sense and personal experience. Of course, "eyeballing it" is legitimate, but documentary editors should inform themselves about linguistic and literary theory to create better-informed policies for transcription and translation. Increasing theoretical sophistication will lead editors to pay more attention to reproducing an author's style. (The hyphenation of re-producing is meant to remind the reader that transcription and translation are creative acts [thus, produce] but that this creativity is constrained by the goal of fidelity to the source text [thus, re-].)

Cloistered Correspondence: Review Of When Prophecy Still Had A Voice: The Letters Of Thomas Merton And Robert Lax, Ed. Arthur W. Biddle., Claire Badaracco Sep 2001

Cloistered Correspondence: Review Of When Prophecy Still Had A Voice: The Letters Of Thomas Merton And Robert Lax, Ed. Arthur W. Biddle., Claire Badaracco

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The publication of these 346 letters over thirty years between Thomas Merton and his friend Robert Lax, who died in Olean, New York, three months before its publication, is timely, comprehensive, definitive, and a significant contribution to Merton studies. This is not light reading. Some of the correspondence is so encoded, privatized, and self-absorbed that the reader needs to compare the letters with the other works of the same period by these writers in order to make sense of things. The edition is scholarly, reliable, a solid addition to one's personal or university library, and highly recommended.

Strike One—You’Re Out! Wildlife Services Helps Reduce Wildlife Conflicts At Airports

Other Bird Strike and Aviation Materials

Collisions between aircraft and wildlife at airports have risen dramatically in recent years as a result of large population increases in many wildlife species, faster airplanes, and the increase in air transportation traffic. Every year between 1991 and 1997, wildlife strikes cost U.S. civil aviation more than $300 million and 500,000 hours of aircraft downtime. About 2,400 bird strikes to civil aircraft are reported each year, and more than 2,500 are reported by the U.S. Air Force. Since 1990, more than 300 deer collisions with aircraft have been reported to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Framework For Internet Banking Security, Jai Ganesh, T R Madanmohan Sep 2001

Framework For Internet Banking Security, Jai Ganesh, T R Madanmohan

IIMB Management Review

The way customers are using financial services is changing rapidly. Today’s financial services are characterised by individuality, mobility, independence of place and time, and flexibility. The Internet, based on client server technology, has facilitated this change. Financial services companies are using the Internet as a new distribution channel, offering complex products at lower transaction costs to more potential customers. This also allows customers to access the service from any part of the world at any time, which they are doing through a range of intelligent information access and processing devices which include PDAs and mobile phones. Financial institutions can use …
