Understanding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Developing Successful Interventions For The Classroom, Amanda Dawn Newman Oct 2001

Understanding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Developing Successful Interventions For The Classroom, Amanda Dawn Newman

Senior Honors Theses

Previously an abundant amount of research has been undertaken concerning interventions that should or should not be used for the treatment of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity-Disorder. The problem with prescribing and implementing interventions lies in the controversies that surround them. The number one controversy surrounds the issue of whether or not stimulant medication, commonly Ritalin, should be used as an intervention. A literature-based research approach and original research in the form of a survey and subsequent observations were used to discover whether stimulant medication should be used within the classroom and what forms of classroom interventions and modifications teachers and researchers are …

The Language Of God: Understanding The Qur'an, Daniel C. Peterson Oct 2001

The Language Of God: Understanding The Qur'an, Daniel C. Peterson

BYU Studies

The faith of Islam, one of the three great "Abrahamic" religions, as they might be called, is closely akin to the other two, Judaism and Christianity. It is tightly bound to and thoroughly permeated by its holy book, the Qur'an. Strangely, though, despite the historical and contemporary importance of Islam and despite Islam's kinship with the faith that has dominated Western civilization, neither Islam in general nor the Qur'an in particular is well known in the West. Nor do Westerners typically know very much about the founder of Islam, the Prophet Muhammad. Yet the story of Muhammad is a dramatic …

Behind The Arabesque: Understanding Islamic Art And Architecture, Cynthia Finlayson Oct 2001

Behind The Arabesque: Understanding Islamic Art And Architecture, Cynthia Finlayson

BYU Studies

God is the light of the heavens and the earth. A likeness of His light is as a pillar on which is a lamp—the lamp is in a glass, the glass is as it were a brightly shining star—lit from a blessed olive-tree, neither eastern nor western, the oil whereof gives light, though fire touch it not—light upon light. God guides to His light whom He pleases. And God sets forth parables for men, and God is Knower of all things.

—Qur'an 24:35

Mormonism And Islam: From Polemics To Mutual Respect And Cooperation, Arnold H. Green Oct 2001

Mormonism And Islam: From Polemics To Mutual Respect And Cooperation, Arnold H. Green

BYU Studies

The world's fastest growing religion is either Islam (if considering annual growth in total numbers) or Mormonism (if considering annual growth in percentage terms). These two rapidly expanding global faiths are certain to increase interactions with each other. Already, in the minds of some clergymen, the two faiths have become associated in several ways, including Mormonism's being called "the Islam of America." While Muslim leaders have so far paid little attention to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Church's General Authorities have expressed opinions about Islam. At first, they reacted negatively to being equated with it. Later, …

Effective Community Policing Performance Measures, Geoffrey P. Alpert, Daniel Flynn, Alex R. Piquero Oct 2001

Effective Community Policing Performance Measures, Geoffrey P. Alpert, Daniel Flynn, Alex R. Piquero

Faculty Publications

As the philosophy of policing moves from a traditional to a community-oriented approach, performance measures must shift as well. Unlike the typical police performance measures of arrest and crime rates found in traditional police philosophies, community-oriented policing performance measures are more general and tend to measure the extent to which police affect the quality of life in the communities they serve as well as the problems they solve. This manuscript begins the process of developing effective community policing performance measures and presents three case studies through which objectives and performance measures are conceptualized.

Diversity In Law Schools: Where Are We Headed In The Twenty-First Century, Jon L. Mills Oct 2001

Diversity In Law Schools: Where Are We Headed In The Twenty-First Century, Jon L. Mills

UF Law Faculty Publications

While we had historically recruited a large number of minority candidates to campus, because of the departures of our minority faculty, we needed to evaluate both our ability to recruit and our ability to retain minority faculty. Discriminatory hiring based on race is forbidden by law. The University of Florida is an equal opportunity employer. As a practical and legal matter, and in contrast to our current student admissions policy, we can consider race in employment decisions only to remedy past discrimination and only if narrowly tailored to serve a compelling state interest. First, it is important to understand the …

Toward A Community Of Professionalism, Elliot L. Bien Oct 2001

Toward A Community Of Professionalism, Elliot L. Bien

The Journal of Appellate Practice and Process

Professionalism amongst American litigators has declined. Many jurisdictions have adopted codes of conduct in order to restore professionalism. These attempts have done little to restore professionalism. Similar adversarial systems, like England's, are admired for their professionalism. What creates this value amongst barristers is a sense of community. A similar practice should be adopted in the United States in order to restore a sense of professionalism in litigation.

The Evolving Role Of The State Solicitor: Toward The Federal Model, James R. Layton Oct 2001

The Evolving Role Of The State Solicitor: Toward The Federal Model, James R. Layton

The Journal of Appellate Practice and Process

A state solicitor gives an attorney general a specialist to turn to for appellate advice. The solicitor's ability to influence what position the state takes and what cases to pursue allows the solicitor to affect the development of law. The number of states with solicitors has grown from eight to twenty-four since 1987. Despite the similarities between state solicitors and the Solicitor General of the United States, there are many differences between the two roles.

Appeals In The Ad Hoc International Criminal Tribunals: Structure, Procedure, And Recent Cases, Mark A. Drumbl, Kenneth S. Gallant Oct 2001

Appeals In The Ad Hoc International Criminal Tribunals: Structure, Procedure, And Recent Cases, Mark A. Drumbl, Kenneth S. Gallant

The Journal of Appellate Practice and Process

The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda are international tribunals that are developing and remaking much of international humanitarian law. The courts double as trial and appellate courts. Each court has jurisdiction over events that occurred in a specific area during a specific time period. The courts have an unusual appellate structure. These unique Appellate Chambers review important trial decisions that deal with genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.
