Professional Ethics In Engineering: The Challenger And Corporate Culture, Joseph G. Ferrante
Professional Ethics In Engineering: The Challenger And Corporate Culture, Joseph G. Ferrante
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
Ethics in engineering is an important issue that affects the daily lives of almost everyone in the world. Because engineers and related scientists design, develop, and manufacture the many products that the public-at-large uses or consumes on a daily basis, it is in the best interest of all concerned that engineers be held to high ethical standards. This paper will reflect on the corporate culture issues involved in ethics in engineering, and specifically how corporate culture can affect ethical engineering and how it did in the case of the Challenger disaster.

Arriving At Consensus: Airport/Aviation Administration Advice Provided To Airport Managers By State Aeronautic Agencies, Robert W. Kaps, David A. Newmyer
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
Recently a study was undertaken to determine the depth of information provided to small airport managers throughout the United States by State Aeronautical agencies. The study centered on efforts to provide formal, written advice to airport managers about airport and aviation administration matters. For the purpose of the study, advice is considered as material provided to airports exclusive of regulatory codes and rules. More specifically, such advice provides airport managers with valuable insight on how to effectively manage various aspects of airport operations. The survey material is concerned with a broad range of indigenous airport topics dealing with subject matter …
Competition Among Securities Markets: A Path Dependent Perspective, John C. Coffee Jr.
Competition Among Securities Markets: A Path Dependent Perspective, John C. Coffee Jr.
Faculty Scholarship
Today, there are an estimated 150 securities exchanges trading stocks around the world. Tomorrow (or at least within the reasonably foreseeable future), this number is likely to shrink radically. The two great forces reshaping the contemporary world – globalization and technology – impact the world of securities markets in a similar and mutually reinforcing fashion:
- they force local and regional markets into more direct competition with distant international markets;
- they increase overall market capitalization and lower the cost of equity capital, as issuers are enabled to access multiple markets; and
- they permit order flow and liquidity to migrate quickly from …

Can Copyright Become User-Friendly? Review: Jessica Litman, Digital Copyright (2001), Jane C. Ginsburg
Faculty Scholarship
In this review, I will first briefly address Professor Litman's evocation of the copyright law-making process. Her discussion of legislative history presents a valuable and compelling account, especially for those unfamiliar with copyright law. Nonetheless, it is not a principal focus of this review. For those who read the Columbia Journal of Law & the Arts (many of whom may well be copyright lawyers), the most provocative portions of the book, to which I will devote most attention, are likely to be the chapters in which Professor Litman (a) reviews and challenges various metaphors for copyright policy (Chapter 5, "Choosing …

Berne Without Borders: Geographic Indiscretion And Digital Communications, Jane C. Ginsburg
Faculty Scholarship
This lecture examines the role of borders in the Berne Convention at the time of the treaty's first passage in 1886, and today. The later 19th century was an era of increasing commerce and communication among countries whose domestic production and reproduction of works of authorship had vastly increased, thanks in part to new technologies, such as photography, lithography, and high-speed printing. But at that time, the frontiers between nations often frustrated authors' hopes for control over, or at least compensation for, the international exploitation of their works. Authors' rights ceased at their national boundaries; the world beyond foreboded not …

Testing The Design Of A Library Information Gateway, W. Bede Mitchell, Laura B. Davidson, Virginia C. Branch, Lynne Lysiak
University Libraries: Faculty Publications
In autumn of 1999, the library World Wide Websites at Appalachian State University and Georgia Southern University had been in place for more than a year, and many library users reported that certain aspects of the sites’ designs were confusing. In order to alleviate the confusion, librarians from the two universities decided to redesign the sites by determining the greatest sources of confusion. To do this, we studied how patrons used the web sites by way of user-centered usability testing.

Evaluation And Rationalization Methodology For The Acquisition Of Packaging Capital Equipment And Services, Craig E. Densmore
Theses
The development of proactive methods for the evaluation, selection, standardization, and rationalization of capital equipment and services used in the medical device industry will benefit equipment/process interchangeability and will result in lower costs of goods (COG). Reduced exposures to legal and regulatory issues are also expected. At the time this study began, senior management believed staff should have the latitude to make continuous improvements initiated without the burden of a corporate regulatory, engineering, quality, or procurement oversight, as long as each facility continued to meet or exceed appropriate performance standards and government regulations.
This work seeks to document the technical, …
An Analysis Of A Radio Frequency Sensor As A Means To Remotely Sense Selected Surface Topographies In An Agriculture Environment, Barry Michael Alexia
An Analysis Of A Radio Frequency Sensor As A Means To Remotely Sense Selected Surface Topographies In An Agriculture Environment, Barry Michael Alexia
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Remote sensing is the science and art of obtaining information about an object, area or phenomenon through the analysis of data acquired by a device that is not in contact with the object, area, or phenomenon under investigation. The remotely sensed data can be of many forms, including variations in force distribution, acoustic wave distribution, or electromagnetic energy distribution.Information thus acquired can be used for observing, monitoring, and studying planetary surfaces and environments.
Because there are many ways to acquire data about targets of interest, there are many types of remote sensors that can be used, including visible, infrared, and active …
Temporal Stability Of Speech Motor Programs In Young Adults, Darath Adele Fisher
Temporal Stability Of Speech Motor Programs In Young Adults, Darath Adele Fisher
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The proportional duration model is used to explain one invariant feature of generalized motor programs, relative timing. This model states that although the overall duration of a movement will change based on how fast or slow it is performed, the relative timing, across movement components remains the same (Gentner, 1987). The purpose of this research was to examine the proportional duration model as it pertains to speech in the normal population. This researcher wanted to determine if the relative timing of syllables in a word remain the same across three different rates of speech (i.e., slow, normal, and fast). The …

What Principals Do To Minimize The Negative Effects Of The Incompetent Teacher, Georgia S. Collins
What Principals Do To Minimize The Negative Effects Of The Incompetent Teacher, Georgia S. Collins
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
Principals and teachers are being held increasingly accountable for student achievement. Every effort should be made to increase the chances of student success in school and in the global community. In this study, the researcher examined the perceptions of principals in the state of Georgia with regard to incompetent teachers, which according to the professional literature are a deterrent to student achievement. As previous research and literature have shown, incompetent teachers remain in school systems despite efforts of building-level administrators to dismiss them. The main focus of this study was to determine the means of minimizing the negative effect of …
The Role Of Mentoring In Developing Professional And Personal Competencies For School Administrators, Marguerite Verble Shook
The Role Of Mentoring In Developing Professional And Personal Competencies For School Administrators, Marguerite Verble Shook
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
In the state of Georgia and across the nation there was a shortage of principals. A new supply of administrators was needed to guide education through the 21st century. These leaders needed updated knowledge and skills to address the needs of an educational system affected by educational reform. Effective leadership allowed administrators to view situations in both the eyes of management and leadership. A mentoring program for beginning administrators provided guidance in developing these skills and in recruiting and retaining individuals for these critical positions.
The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of a mentoring program for …

An Investigation Of Captive Florida Manatee (Trichecus Manatus Latirostris) Behavior And Social Interactions, Jennifer Sadler Young
An Investigation Of Captive Florida Manatee (Trichecus Manatus Latirostris) Behavior And Social Interactions, Jennifer Sadler Young
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
Human impacts such as pollution, habitat alteration, and boating have caused many injuries and deaths of the Florida manatee, Trichechus manutus latirostris. Rehabilitation centers have been established in Florida to help return sick or injured manatees back to the wild. Manatees that are released back to the wild after undergoing rehabilitation in captivity might lose some of their abilities to survive in the wild. A factor that might alter behavior in captive individuals was examined by determining if length of time spent in captivity influenced the behavior of manatees during rehabilitation. Even though all facilities follow similar guidelines, invariable …

Pharmacokinetic And Pharmcodynamic Studies Of Apomorphine In The Treatment Of Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease, Wendy Ingram
Pharmacokinetic And Pharmcodynamic Studies Of Apomorphine In The Treatment Of Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease, Wendy Ingram
Peninsula Medical School Theses
There were two aspects to the study of apomorphine in the treatment of Parkinson' s disease: (i) a clinical pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) study was designed and implemented in response to the challenges of apomorphine dose-titration in Parkinson's disease, and in view of the scarcity of available literature on the PK-PD relationships of apomorphine in Parkinson's disease, (ii) the PK(and tolerability)of apomorphine dosing using novel delivery/formulation combinations were explored in view of the inherent limitations associated with the conventional (ie. subcutaneous) route of administration of apomorphine (e.g. cutaneous nodule formation, needle-phobia). An HPLC assay was developed for the quantification of apomorphine in …

Memory Recall Among Individuals Reporting Child Sexual Abuse: The Role Of Suggestibility, Dissociation, And Closeness With The Perpetrator, Tammy M. Schultz
Memory Recall Among Individuals Reporting Child Sexual Abuse: The Role Of Suggestibility, Dissociation, And Closeness With The Perpetrator, Tammy M. Schultz
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Over the past decade, a contentious debate regarding delayed memories of child sexual abuse (CSA) has existed. Advocates on one side of the debate (Williams, 1994) maintain that common sequelae to traumatic events include memory disturbances. Dissociation and the dependent relationship between the victim and perpetrator are used to explain these memory disturbances. In contrast, proponents from the other end of the continuum (Loftus, 1993) argue abusive events are memorable, and suggestible clients adopt erroneous traumatic memories, as a result of leading questions used in therapy. The purpose of this study was to determine the epidemiology of CSA, and address …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The psychological disorder of repetitive self-mutilation represents a significant clinical problem. In spite of the growing interest in this problem, insufficiency of information does not allow listing self-mutilation as a separate disorder in DSM-IV. The present research was aimed to add to an understanding the phenomenon of self-mutilating behavior from the point of view of Adler's individualPsychology. The early childhood recollections (ERs) of 32 self-mutilators (SM) drawn from the population of the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility (WVCF) were compared to the ERs of 37 non self-mutilators (NSM) drawn from the same population. The participants completed the Demographic Questionnaire and the …
