Using Ssm Proxies To Provide Efficient Multiple-Source Multicast Delivery, Daniel Zappala, Aaron Fabbri
Using Ssm Proxies To Provide Efficient Multiple-Source Multicast Delivery, Daniel Zappala, Aaron Fabbri
Faculty Publications
We consider the possibility that single-source multicast (SSM) will become a universal multicast service, enabling large-scale distribution of content from a few well-known sources to a general audience. Operating under this assumption, we explore the problem of building the traditional IP model of any-source multicast on top of SSM. Toward this end, we design an SSM proxy service that allows any sender to efficiently deliver content to a multicast group. We demonstrate the performance improvements this service offers over standard SSM and describe extensions for access control, dynamic proxy discovery, and multicast proxy distribution.

Winning On For The Gipper: Diversity Strategies And Initiative At Notre Dame, Hugh R. Page Jr., Ph. D., Richard Pierce Ph. D., Gina Shropshire Ph. D., Lynn Todman Ph. D.
Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)
One of the enduring images linked to the University of Notre Dame is that of injured football player George Gipp imploring Coach Knute Rockne to "Win One for the Gipper. " Similarly, people of color and conscience at Notre Dame struggle with formidable challenges in implementing diversity into areas of faculty retention, university initiatives and community outreach, all while remaining sane. The panelists will discuss innovative successes and continuing efforts that can be adapted by others seeking a game plan for diversity.
Workplace Mediation For Diversity Conflicts, Maxine Ballard
Workplace Mediation For Diversity Conflicts, Maxine Ballard
Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)
Diversity conflicts usually occur in organizations where communication is inadequate and generally require a third party to facilitate resolution. Developing and preserving healthy workplace relationships must be a top priority for all employees. Using mediation to resolve diversity conflicts in the workplace allow preservation of jobs and full and equal participation and contributions by all employees (including minority employee groups). This workshop is designed to provide people of color in predominantly white institutions an alternate dispute resolution method to resolve relational conflicts such as race, gender, age and culture differences.

Through the exploration of students' responses, the presenters will identify what services, programming and space should be offered in a multicultural facility.

Academentia: Physiological Stress, Toxic Work Sites And The Neutralization Of Blackness By The Whiteness Standards Of Professionalization, Enoch H. Page Ph.D.
Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)
Using auto-ethnographic methods, supplementing by current race theories, along with interviews from other scholars, I regard academentia as a form of professionalism most readily communicable to academics of color seeking advance. It can also infect those whose embrace of blackness (widely defined across cultures) is the least tolerant of the racial designs of white cultural practices. Where in the interest of students and colleagues, such academics challenge the whiteness criteria defining academic success, most of their peers adhere to the racial standards of professionalism.

From Plantation To Partnership Politics: Being Black In The Academy, Valarie Greene King Ph.D., Rebekah Mccloud Ed.D., Diana Mitchell
Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)
This session examines the lingering impact of systems of domination and oppression on black faculty and staff on predominantly white campuses. It highlights ways these forces continue to stifle and impede the efforts by blacks to build meaningful and supportive alliances. Sobreviviendo The White Corn Fields: Chicanas And Latinas In Predominantly White Institutions, Amelia M. L. Montes
Sobreviviendo The White Corn Fields: Chicanas And Latinas In Predominantly White Institutions, Amelia M. L. Montes
Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)
Graduate students are often reminded that acquiring a job in the academic field often demands living far from family and familiar surroundings. For minority doctoral students—specifically Chicanas and Latinas from the West and Southwest–who accept academic positions in Midwest and Eastern predominantly white institutions, the job may test familial cultural beliefs and affect faculty recruitment and retention. I argue that institutions must better understand the needs of new minority faculty hires. This session will explore the personal and professional necessities that both the predominantly white institutions and the Chicana/Latina must consider in order to be successful in recruitment, hiring and …

Competing Interests: Strategies For Working With Diverse Minority Groups, Dorscine Spigner Littles Ph.D., Amelia M. Adams M.A.
Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)
Intentionally or non-intentionally, budgetary constraints have caused ethnic groups on many predominantly white campuses to compete among themselves for a share of limited power and resources. The purpose of this workshop is to discuss strategies that will provide equitable access to resources, information, finances and opportunities to have a representative community that reflects the diverse populations on campuses.

Engaging In Difficult Dialogues Beyond Color: Where Do You Draw The Line Between Race, Gender And Authority In The Classroom?, Safoura A. Boukari
Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)
Grounding the discussion in Check Anta Diop’s Cradle theory, this paper invites us for a critical thinking and questioning of the very existence, the relevance of the color concept itself alongside the negative and detrimental impacts color has on, especially, Black women in academia. Historical, anthropological, scientific findings and theorists of the “Monogenesis” like, Asa G. Hilliard III (Free Your Mind: Return to the Source) traced the human origin back to a single human being, a woman, more than 10.000 years ago. In reference to the current trend, skin color could be defined as nothing, but the result of an …

Promoting Higher Education: The Latino Achievement Mentoring Program (Lamp), Byron L. Zamboanga, Lisa Knoche, Gloria Gonzalez-Kruger, Marcela Raffaelli
Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)
Statistics suggest that Latino youths are at risk for academic underachievement and withdrawal. Culturally sensitive approaches to supporting school achievement based on the needs of Latino youth and their families must be developed. In response to these needs, the Latino Research Initiative (LRI), a collaborative group with members from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and the Hispanic Community Center (HCC) created the Latino Achievement Mentoring Program (LAMP). LAMP is a culturally appropriate mentoring program designed to promote school success and post-secondary opportunities for Latino youths. This program provides Latino youths with positive role models and information and guidance about academic …
