Forensic Science Associates (FSA) is a Virginia law enforcement training school. The problem is that FSA wishes to expand! the scope of its operation and! sees opportunities in training international police. Currently it does not have a program for such training. The purpose of this project was to develop a plan to offer courses designed to be attractive, useful, and contemporary, to train international police educators at FSA.

There were four research questions for this project First, "What are the training needs of international law enforcement agencies that FSA could provide for effectively?" Second, "What are the appropriate elements to …

How Can Increasing Parent Involvement Improve Student Performance In Reading And Math?, Mary O. Jones Jan 2001

How Can Increasing Parent Involvement Improve Student Performance In Reading And Math?, Mary O. Jones

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

In 2000, parents were less likely to be involved in school than in the previous decade. Increasing parent involvement may be related to improved student performance and prevention of poor performance in students. This practicum was conducted at 1 elementary school in a small, rural school district to investigate how to increase parent involvement and how that increased involvement would affect student performance in reading and mathematics.

Teachers were surveyed about school needs and identified parent involvement as the needed area of improvement. Parents were surveyed about participation in the school, and a set of strategies was designed to involve …

Development Of An Associate Of Applied Science Degree In Interpreting For The Deaf At The Community College Of Southern Nevada, Sandra L. Workman

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The associate of applied science degree in deaf studies has been in place since 1 994 and 4 is transferrable as a prerequisite toward a four-year deaf studies degree. The Community College of Southern Nevada (CCSN) has the only deaf studies program in the state. If a student wants to pursue a degree in interpreting for the deaf, the student must go out of state. In July, 1 997, the governor of Nevada signed a law stating that American Sign Language is a fully developed, autonomous, natural language with distinct grammar, syntax, and art forms. However, the current administrations at …

A Comparison Of Student Performance In New Testament Exegesis With And Without Hermeneutics As A Pre-Requisite, Brendan Roach

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The problem under investigation was that the academic performance of several students in a new course offered at Harvest Bible College called New Testament Exegesis was unsatisfactory. The purpose of the study was to compare student performance in New Testament Exegesis between students who had completed Hermeneutics before commencing the course with those 2 who had not. The research question was, "Do students who take Hermeneutics as a pre-requisite course for New Testament Exegesis have an improved academic performance over students who do not have the pre-requisite?"

A quasi-experimental research design was used to determine the effect of a treatment. …

Reducing Disciplinary Referrals And Academic Failure Rate Of Seventh- And Eighth-Grade Students, Melad Smith Jr. Jan 2001

Reducing Disciplinary Referrals And Academic Failure Rate Of Seventh- And Eighth-Grade Students, Melad Smith Jr.

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This practicum addressed the excessive disciplinary referrals and the academic failure rate of 7th- and 8th-grade students of Charlton County High School in Folkston, Georgia. The data collected during the 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 school years served as the basis of this practicum. During the 1998-1999 school year, the 7th and 8th grades accounted for 46. 9% of all high school referrals, and an alarming 23. 5% of total students in 7th and 8th grade failed academic courses in social studies, math, science, and English. During the 1999-2000 school year, a preliminary investigation was implemented to curtail the academic and discipline …

Parents In Partnership With Children To Improve Student Readiness Skills, Glenda G. Miller Jan 2001

Parents In Partnership With Children To Improve Student Readiness Skills, Glenda G. Miller

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

In compliance with Goal 1 of Goals 2000: Educate America Act of 1994 (U.S. Department of Education, 2001), all children should enter school with all developmental skills in place, ready to learn. In the 2000-2001 school year, educators reported that a large majority of kindergartners continued to enter school with less than the expected chronological-age-level skills, and it is their anticipation that this goal will continue to be unmet. Partially due to the lack of agreement on what readiness constitutes and the lack of availability of programs that are designed to focus on appropriate developmental programs for preschoolers, children continue …

On Marczewski-Burstin Representations Of Certain Algebras Of Sets, Krzysztof Ciesielski Jan 2001

On Marczewski-Burstin Representations Of Certain Algebras Of Sets, Krzysztof Ciesielski

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We show that the Generalized Continuum Hypothesis GCH (its appropriate part) implies that many natural algebras on R, including the algebra B of Borel sets and the interval algebra S, are outer Marczewski-Burstin representable by families of non-Borel sets. Also we construct, assuming again an appropriate part of GCH, that there are algebras on R which are not MB-representable. We prove that some algebras (including B and S) are not inner MB-representable. We give examples of algebras which are inner and outer MB-representable, or are inner but not outer MB-representable.

The Association Of Food Cravings And Preferences With Food Intake, Corby Kyle Martin Jan 2001

The Association Of Food Cravings And Preferences With Food Intake, Corby Kyle Martin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

An ubiquitous assumption about food intake behavior is that people eat the types of foods that they crave and prefer. Food preferences reflect hedonic ratings of the degree to which people like certain foods. The present study investigated the association of food cravings and hedonic ratings with food intake behavior, assessed in the laboratory with a Universal Eating Monitor (Kissileff, Klingsberg, & Van Itallie, 1980). The study sample consisted of 162 adults who completed the Food Craving Inventory (FCI; White, Whisenhunt, Williamson, Greenway, & Netemeyer, 2001), a questionnaire that measures craving, including cravings for specific types of foods (i.e., High …

Girls Playing Netball : Factors Influencing Participation In Community Sport During A Transition Phase, Suzanne Sharp

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study describes the influences on continued sporting participation in netball for a group of adolescent girls as they make the transition from primary to secondary school and between sub-junior and junior sporting structures. A qualitative research design using one to one and semi structured focus group interviews was applied. The research describes how these meanings and identities both influence decisions about ongoing sporting participation and are influenced by situations, events and people as the participants move from primary to secondary school. Individual and focus group interview and survey data, indicate that for this group of young adolescent girls a …

Molecular Genetic Investigation Of Autosomal Dominant Muscular Dystrophy, Christopher Meredith Jan 2001

Molecular Genetic Investigation Of Autosomal Dominant Muscular Dystrophy, Christopher Meredith

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis contributes to the Human Genome Project by adding detail to the physical and genetic maps of the human genome, and by identifying a strong candidate gene for a form of distal myopathy. Genomic clones for the human skeletal muscle genes slow troponin (TNN/1), alpha actin (ACTA1), and (3-tropomyosin (TPM2) were isolated for use in the fluorescent in situ hybridisation localisation of these genes on the cytogenetic map of the human genome. The localisation of these genes made them potential candidates for inherited skeletal muscle diseases, including the muscular dystrophies investigated here. Microsatellite, VNTR and RFLP markers were used …

Relationship Between Early Development Of Spelling And Reading, Lorraine S. Hammond Jan 2001

Relationship Between Early Development Of Spelling And Reading, Lorraine S. Hammond

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The research reported in this thesis examined the relationship between beginning spelling and reading. More specifically, it focussed on the relationship between the development of early reading and spelling in a context where the approach to early reading instruction includes systematic phonological awareness and decoding instruction. A critical assumption made by proponents of developmental early literacy models is that transfer of skills and knowledge from reading to spelling will occur spontaneously and without formal instruction (Frith, 1980). By contrast instruction-centred approaches make the assumption that there are critical pre-requisite skills that can and should be taught explicitly (Carnine, Silbert & …
