Dis-Semblances: Physiognomy And Fiction In Borges’S Historia Universal De La Infamia, David Laraway Jan 2001

Dis-Semblances: Physiognomy And Fiction In Borges’S Historia Universal De La Infamia, David Laraway

Faculty Publications

Over a decade after publishing Ficciones and some six years after El Aleph made its way into print, Borges had occasion to write a new introduction to Historia universal de la infomia, his first extended exploration of the mechanisms of fictional narrative. It was, he reflected of the 1935 work, an "irresponsable juego de un timido que nose anim6 a escribir cuentos y que se distrajo en falsear y tergiversar [ ... ]. No es otra cosa que apariencia [ ... ] una superficie de imagenes" (Obras l: 291). There can be little question that, compared with Ficciones and El …

Psychological Mechanisms Underlying Individual Knowledge And Contribution In Learning Organizations, Bin Zhao, Hwee Hoon Tan Jan 2001

Psychological Mechanisms Underlying Individual Knowledge And Contribution In Learning Organizations, Bin Zhao, Hwee Hoon Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Although much has been written about how to set up learning organizations, there is a paucity of research on understanding employees’ willingness to learn or contribute knowledge in such activities, a key element in the success of organizational learning. This paper presents models for understanding individuals’ willingness to learn and individuals’ willingness to contribute in organizational settings. Through the examination of the psychological mechanisms underlying individuals’ willingness to learn and to contribute, we will further our understanding on the individual and contextual factors that affect employees’ decision to learn and contribute in organizational learning activities. Drawing from the literature, we …

Surface Analogy And Spelling Rules In English Vowel Alterations, David Eddington Jan 2001

Surface Analogy And Spelling Rules In English Vowel Alterations, David Eddington

Faculty Publications

Previous psycholinguistic research into the English vocalic system suggest that the vowel alternations [ei-re, ii-£, ai-1, ow- a, u"-A], termed SPELLING RULE ALTERNATIONS, are psychologically significant for English speakers, in that they can influence the pronunciation of unfamiliar words. In this paper, the influence of these salient alternations on nonce words and neologisms is assessed. The effect of su1face analogy on the pronunciation of novel words is also examined. Surface analogy may be defined as the influence exerted by the fu lly specified surface forms of the morphemic relatives of a word. It assumes that all allomorphs of a given …

Teaching Effectiveness In An Introductory High School Honors Physics Course As Measured By The Force Concept Inventory, April Crawford Moore Jan 2001

Teaching Effectiveness In An Introductory High School Honors Physics Course As Measured By The Force Concept Inventory, April Crawford Moore

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Of importance to many teachers is that students emerge from a course of study with an acceptable level of comprehension of the subject matter presented and that students' course grades reflect that understanding. The primary question of this research was, "How effective in promoting comprehension of Newtonian concepts is this teacher's use of selected interactive strategies?" Secondary questions were: 1. What modifications to instruction, if any, have to be made for implementation of interactive-engagement strategies? 2. Following instruction in mechanics, which misconceptions probed by the Force Concept Inventory (FCI) are retained by students, and which misconceptions are corrected? 3. How …

Formative Assessment In University Of Northern Iowa Specialized Writing Center Outreach: Articulating Practices And Speaking A Common Language, Caran Amber Crawford Jan 2001

Formative Assessment In University Of Northern Iowa Specialized Writing Center Outreach: Articulating Practices And Speaking A Common Language, Caran Amber Crawford

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

College writing centers are individualized places, which often causes miscommunication of the ideas and purposes centers uphold. However, if centers articulate the use of formative assessment strategies in tutoring writing, they would help alleviate miscommunications and strengthen the way writing centers explain their work in literature and practice; centers can also use formative assessment tools to evaluate their practices. This study identifies formative assessment strategies by means of observing writer/tutor roles, interactions, and outcomes in University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Writing Center practices in one-on-one tutorials for Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) writers and in the Spring 2000 PPST Workshop. The …

On The Interaction Of Alphabetic And Logographic Words With Sounds And Images, Nader T. Tavassoli, Jin K. Han Jan 2001

On The Interaction Of Alphabetic And Logographic Words With Sounds And Images, Nader T. Tavassoli, Jin K. Han

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

It is well established that reading alphabetic words is dominated by phonological (sound-based) processes, whereas phonological processes do not appear to dominate the processing of Chinese logographs, where visual processes are more pronounced (for reviews, see Tavassoli, in press; Zhou & Marslen-Wilson, 1999). Most previous demonstrations of these linguistic differences have relied on low-level processes that potentially do not involve short-term memory. For example, they have attempted to assess differences in the speed (measured in milliseconds) by which phonological and semantic information get activated in the brain. Our research adds to a growing stream of consumer behavior research that has …

Non-Social Play As A Risk Factor In Social And Emotional Development, Charissa S. L. Cheah, Larry J. Nelson, Kenneth H. Rubin Jan 2001

Non-Social Play As A Risk Factor In Social And Emotional Development, Charissa S. L. Cheah, Larry J. Nelson, Kenneth H. Rubin

Faculty Publications

Children spend much of their youthful energy engaged in play. Indeed, play, in its various forms, represents a serious business – not only for the active participations, but also for students of the phenomenon. To many researchers, play is viewed as a generative fore in children's social, emotional, and cognitive development (see Rubin, Fein, & Vandenberg, 1983; Saracho & Spodek, 1998; Fromberg & Bergen, 1998). The extent to which children engage in play with others is of added developmental significance. In light of the complexity and developmental significance of children's play and especially play with peers, it seems important to …

All That Glitters Is Not Gold: Bad Forgiveness In Counseling And Preaching, John M. Berecz Jan 2001

All That Glitters Is Not Gold: Bad Forgiveness In Counseling And Preaching, John M. Berecz

Faculty Publications

A 3 R's of Forgiveness model is presented in which forgiveness is seen as a complex therapeutic process involving both situational and personal variables. Forgivers are seen to utilize the cognitive processes of dialectical reasoning and reframing, modulated by the emotional experiences of empathy, guilt, and shame. Personality style and self-esteem significantly influence the process as well. Distinctions are maintained among various kinds of forgiveness. Divine forgiveness, seen as a partial component of a spiritual encounter with one's God, may be a valid experience for people of faith, but is not something that psychologists are equipped to experimentally analyze. Interpersonal …

The Law Of White Spaces: Race, Culture, And Legal Education, Peter Goodrich, Linda G. Mills Jan 2001

The Law Of White Spaces: Race, Culture, And Legal Education, Peter Goodrich, Linda G. Mills

Articles

The scene, drawn from memory, is a first-year law school classroom. It is the early 1980s and the class is on civil procedure. The teacher is a white woman. She is nervous, and the class is dominated by students who provide standard right answers to formulaic law school questions. Other points of view, particularly those of a critical or feminist nature, are either passed over quickly or ignored. Questions of color are never mentioned. More than that, the teacher never calls on any African-American students. Students of color are either ignored completely or told, when they have questions, “We are …

Arc - An Oai Service Provider For Digital Library Federation, Xiaoming Liu, Kurt Maly, Mohammad Zubair, Michael L. Nelson Jan 2001

Arc - An Oai Service Provider For Digital Library Federation, Xiaoming Liu, Kurt Maly, Mohammad Zubair, Michael L. Nelson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The usefulness of the many on-line journals and scientific digital libraries that exist today is limited by the inability to federate these resources through a unified interface. The Open Archive Initiative (OAI) is one major effort to address technical interoperability among distributed archives. The objective of OAI is to develop a framework to facilitate the discovery of content in distributed archives. In this paper, we describe our experience and lessons learned in building Arc, the first federated searching service based on the OAI protocol. Arc harvests metadata from several OAI compliant archives, normalizes them, and stores them in a search …

Smart Objects And Open Archives, Michael L. Nelson, Kurt Maly Jan 2001

Smart Objects And Open Archives, Michael L. Nelson, Kurt Maly

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Within the context of digital libraries (DLs), we are making information objects "first-class citizens". We decouple information objects from the systems used for their storage and retrieval, allowing the technology for both DLs and information content to progress independently. We believe dismantling the stovepipe of "DL-archive-content" is the first step in building richer DL experiences for users and insuring the long-term survivability of digital information. To demonstrate this partitioning between DLs, archives and information content, we introduce "buckets": aggregative, intelligent, object-oriented constructs for publishing in digital libraries. Buckets exist within the "Smart Object, Dumb Archive" (SODA) DL model, which promotes …

Sojourn, John A. Heidersbach Jan 2001

Sojourn, John A. Heidersbach

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

My visual thesis, titled "Sojourn," is made up of 12 paintings, plus four preparatory drawings and color studies. Collectively, these works are an ongoing narrative commentary on vagaries of the human condition as I have observed them during the past 35 or so years of my adult life. While each of the paintings can be viewed separately, they were intended from the start to be shown together, as I believe the similarities in their subject matter and overall composition have a synergistic effect when viewed as a group. All of the paintings were done in acrylic paints on stretched canvas. …

Advanced Information Systems: Impact On Organizational Reality, Rolf D. Dixon Jan 2001

Advanced Information Systems: Impact On Organizational Reality, Rolf D. Dixon

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Today, with the proliferation of increasingly advanced information technologies in organizations, a significant challenge can be made to the traditional assumptions regarding the non-rationality of organizational behavior. It is the purpose of this paper to consider the effects of advanced information technologies on the spatial, structural, social, and informational processes of the organization and to suggest how this could, in fact, signal a return to the “rational” organization. This paper will consider the issue of organizational rationality in a normative manner with several propositions offered.

Which Accounting Methods For Small Construction Contractors Are Allowed For Tax Purposes? Which Is Best? A Decision Heuristic Helps Choose, Jeffrey N. Barnes, Katherine Black Jan 2001

Which Accounting Methods For Small Construction Contractors Are Allowed For Tax Purposes? Which Is Best? A Decision Heuristic Helps Choose, Jeffrey N. Barnes, Katherine Black

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Many tax preparers still have difficulty determining and properly communicating the allowable tax accounting methods and bookkeeping procedures needed for small construction contractors, especially those having partially completed contracts at year-end. For many small construction contractors, the Internal Revenue Code is confusing and even court opinions give mixed signals as to which accounting method is permissible. This paper provides a discussion on the allowable methods of tax accounting and provides a decision heuristic to simplify the choice of allowable methods. The paper also offers suggestions about bookkeeping procedures.

Negotiating A Policy Of Prudent Science And Proactive Law In The Brave New World Of Genetic Information, Sherwin Chen Jan 2001

Negotiating A Policy Of Prudent Science And Proactive Law In The Brave New World Of Genetic Information, Sherwin Chen

UC Law Journal

Continuing advances in the science of molecular genetics have produced technologies that are capable of transforming our most fundamental perceptions of life and death. The fruits of genetic research have enabled doctors to identify the sex of children before they are born, as well as estimate their chances for developing hundreds of types of diseases. Other technologies based on this science include new identification techniques, limited therapies, and even new forms of life. With these unprecedented and powerful new possibilities, it is clear that the social and legal dimensions of genetic research and related technologies deserve careful examination. The purpose …

Sovereignty Versus Space - Public Law And Private Launch In The Asian Context, Frans G. Von Der Dunk Jan 2001

Sovereignty Versus Space - Public Law And Private Launch In The Asian Context, Frans G. Von Der Dunk

Space, Cyber, and Telecommunications Law Program: Faculty Publications

In the more than forty years which have gone by since the birth of space law, there has not been a more revolutionary development than the rapidly increasing involvement of private entities in space activities. International space law in the narrow sense—essentially five space treaties and five United Nations Resolutions on space constituting the core of the corpus juris spatialis internationalis— developed for its most fundamental part when only states (and a few international organisations) were undertaking space activities in any meaningful sense of the word. Its exclusively public character, for example in terms of rights and obligations provided …

Faculty Response To The Report Of A Comprehensive Issues Review For The Southeast Research And Extension Center And The Southeast Extension District Jan 2001

Faculty Response To The Report Of A Comprehensive Issues Review For The Southeast Research And Extension Center And The Southeast Extension District

Southeast Research and Extension Center: Reports and Administration

A) The Review Team supports the planning process that was utilized by the Faculty/Staff to identify and define issues for this review. We support the continuance of issue teams in Southeast Nebraska. We will not name the teams but leave that to the faculty and Dr. Cantrell to determine. We endorse the identification of program coordinators to head the teams. It is our suggestion that Dr. Cantrell and the identified program coordinators clearly define these roles in job descriptions, and plan for an ongoing communication between the district administration and the teams. It probably goes without saying, but we would …

Climate Change And Extreme Weather Events - Implications For Food Production, Plant Diseases, And Pests, Cynthia Rosenzweig, Ana Iglesius, X. B. Yang, Paul R. Epstein, Eric Chivian

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Current and future energy use from burning of fossil fuels and clearing of forests for cultivation can have profound effects on the global environment, agriculture, and the availability of low-cost, high-quality food for humans. Individual farmers and consumers are expected to be affected by changes in global and regional climate. The agricultural sector in both developing and developed areas needs to understand what is at stake and to prepare for the potential for change wisely.
Despite tremendous improvements in technology and crop yield potential, food production remains highly dependent on climate, because solar radiation, temperature, and precipitation are the main …

Assessment Of Outputs From Smith-Root Model-5.0 Gpp And Model-7.5 Gpp Electrofishers, Kevin L. Pope, Brian E. Van Zee, Michael C. Mayo, Mohammed Rahman Jan 2001

Assessment Of Outputs From Smith-Root Model-5.0 Gpp And Model-7.5 Gpp Electrofishers, Kevin L. Pope, Brian E. Van Zee, Michael C. Mayo, Mohammed Rahman

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

We evaluated the outputs from eight Smith-Root electrofishers (two factory-rigged model-5.0 GPP boats, four biologist-rigged model-5.0 GPP boats, and two biologist-rigged model- 7.5 GPP boats), using an oscilloscope to determine the actual waveforms (voltage as a function of time), current, and power produced for various settings. Differences were found in average power outputs among the six model-5.0 GPP electrofishing boats. In terms of average power output, biologist-rigged electrofishing boats using generators and control boxes purchased from Smith-Root were as or more effective than those rigged by Smith-Root. However, factory-rigged boats generally contained additional safety features that should be considered when …

A Calligrapher's Art: Inscribed Cotton Ikat From Yemen, Carol Bier Jan 2001

A Calligrapher's Art: Inscribed Cotton Ikat From Yemen, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Yemen at the advent of Islam and in the ensuing centuries is a little known entity in our contemporary world. A thousand years ago when Baghdad was capital of the Islamic empire under the Abbasid caliphs, Yemen was a flourishing center of agriculture and trade. By camel caravan north to central Islamic lands and in maritime trade with India to the east and Africa across the straits, Yemen's ports of call along the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden were emporia for textiles, dyestuffs, and incense.

While today Yemen predominantly imports textiles from abroad, in the early centuries after the …

Sandhill Crane Abundance At Grays Lake, Idaho, L J. Ball, Jane E. Austin, Adonia R. Henry Jan 2001

Sandhill Crane Abundance At Grays Lake, Idaho, L J. Ball, Jane E. Austin, Adonia R. Henry

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop

We initiated a study on the breeding ecology of greater sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis tabida) in the Grays Lake basin ofIdaho in 1997. Interest in the status of crane populations at Grays Lake is high; consequently, we present preliminary information on estimated size of the population, changes since the 1970s, and potential environmental factors involved. Drewien (1973) counted an average of549 cranes in the spring and estimated 250 nesting pairs in 1970-71. Number of nesting pairs reportedly increased 33% (to 332) by 1982 in response to intensive management, then declined 40-60% by 1996 (Drewien 1997, and Homocker Wildlife …
