Prophetic Preaching To Resistant Audiences: A Call For Change, Charles Rayburn Ferguson Jan 2001

Prophetic Preaching To Resistant Audiences: A Call For Change, Charles Rayburn Ferguson

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Recent trends in homiletics emphasize preaching about the listeners’ felt-needs. Often the nature of prophetic-preaching requires the preacher to address needs that are not felt by the listeners. This present study was to create a homiletical strategy for preaching unpopular truths and about needs that are unperceived by the listeners. This study was also to identify some unpopular truths and unperceived needs of the Spokane Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church that were to be addressed in a series of sermons.

Method. A biblical study was conducted into the role of the preacher as prophet. This study compared the techniques used …

A Training Program For Local Church Elders/Leaders In Northeast India, Kongyui Awungshi Shimray Jan 2001

A Training Program For Local Church Elders/Leaders In Northeast India, Kongyui Awungshi Shimray

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Local church elders and leaders in the Northeast India Union have regularly cared for nurturing and evangelism within the church. They have performed pastoral responsibilities because there are only eighteen paid district pastors in charge of over 130 organized churches and more than 300 companies. However, elders and leaders have no training to perform the task effectively. To enable local church elders and leaders to minister effectively, leadership training is required.

Method

The project considered first the concept of Christ's servant leadership as a basis for the work of elders and local leaders within the chinch. It also reviewed …

A Comparison Of Student Performance In New Testament Exegesis With And Without Hermeneutics As A Pre-Requisite, Brendan Roach Jan 2001

A Comparison Of Student Performance In New Testament Exegesis With And Without Hermeneutics As A Pre-Requisite, Brendan Roach

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The problem under investigation was that the academic performance of several students in a new course offered at Harvest Bible College called New Testament Exegesis was unsatisfactory. The purpose of the study was to compare student performance in New Testament Exegesis between students who had completed Hermeneutics before commencing the course with those 2 who had not. The research question was, "Do students who take Hermeneutics as a pre-requisite course for New Testament Exegesis have an improved academic performance over students who do not have the pre-requisite?"

A quasi-experimental research design was used to determine the effect of a treatment. …

Situating 2 Timothy In Early Christian History, Mona Joy Lafosse Jan 2001

Situating 2 Timothy In Early Christian History, Mona Joy Lafosse

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The New Testament letter of 2 Timothy has generally been studied in the context of two other letters, 1 Timothy and Titus. These three letters, known as the Pastoral Epistles, each purports to be written by Paul. Though some scholars defend this notion, the majority of critical scholars argue they were not written by Paul, but by someone in the early second century. For these scholars, a later date better explains several aspects of these letters that make Pauline authorship difficult to explain. One crucial aspect is that the language, particularly the vocabulary and style of the Pastoral Epistles, is …
