Sexual Profanity And Interpersonal Judgement., Robert Paul O'Neil Jan 2001

Sexual Profanity And Interpersonal Judgement., Robert Paul O'Neil

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

One of the cultural changes noted in American society in the last fifty years has been a noticeable increase in the public use of sexual profanity, particularly by women. Many commentators attribute this change to the sexual revolution of the nineteen-sixties and seventies, as well as the increasing emancipation of women from traditional gender roles. This dissertation examines the ideological foundations that have shaped both western sexual attitudes and the nature of modern use of sexual profanity, to question whether these changes are indicative of greater gender equity. Using a dramaturgical approach to gender identity, an alternative interpretation is presented …

Embracing The Void: Nietzsche's "Zarathustra" And The Political., James Daniel Stewart Jan 2001

Embracing The Void: Nietzsche's "Zarathustra" And The Political., James Daniel Stewart

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation explores Nietzsche's political theory through an analysis of his major work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra. It is demonstrated that the narrative structure of Zarathustra follows from a politically-grounded critique of collective human existence. Nietzsche critiques the state and mass society as inherently repressive. He critiques the concept of the community and friendship as producing ressentiment and bad conscience. One of the central metaphors in Zarathustra proves to be that of nausea, arising from contempt for the mediocre masses of humanity and the realization of the chaotic and contingent nature of existence. Through nausea, the individual necessarily becomes separated from …

Penn And West Philadelphia, Dale Mezzacappa Jan 2001

Penn And West Philadelphia, Dale Mezzacappa

Partnerships/Community

May 13, 1985, was one of the most tragic days in the history of Philadelphia. ln an effort to dislodge the troublesome back-to-nature group MOVE, the police department bombed its row house, inadvertently setting off a fire that engulfed two city blocks, displaced 53 families, and killed 11 people. It's hard to imagine that anything good could come out of an event like this, but it did. The MOVE fire served as the catalyst that propelled the fledgling West Philadelphia Improvement Corps into what is now one of the most far-reaching collaborations between an urban university and the schools in …

Effects Of Gender And Position Of Test Stimuli On Undergraduates ' Spatial Task Performance, James Brenton Curley

Masters Theses

This study predicted that sex differences in performance can occur where the sense of touch serves as vision, and that the position of the test array may significantly affect performance. Sixty-four college undergraduates (32 males and 32 females), with ages ranging from 18-27 (M = 20.06, SD = 1.82) were recruited from the psychology subject pool of Eastern Illinois University for participation. Apparatus consisted of templates with raised line drawings of tilted jars containing water drawn on them. The subjects were blindfolded and instructed to interpret four jar drawings at a time. The task consisted of identifying the jar with …

Retrospective: The Birthing Of A Discipline, William Cenkner Jan 2001

Retrospective: The Birthing Of A Discipline, William Cenkner

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

It is not clear whether Hindu-Christian study is a new enterprise or something that has been in progress for some years. My four decade experience has confronted a set of problems clouding any self-identity. First is the problem of naming. My own preference has always been the written text and my training, likewise, has been textual. In fact every course in graduate school was the study of a particular Indian text, whether Hindu or Buddhist. That's what Indology was about in those years. We were wary of comparative religions done in Europe and further saw religionswisenchaft as generalist and even …

Feminism, Corporations, And Capitalism: Policy And Protest, Faith Stevelman Jan 2001

Feminism, Corporations, And Capitalism: Policy And Protest, Faith Stevelman

Articles & Chapters

To consider the relationship of feminism, capitalism and corporation law is a daunting task for the reason that it requires a reconsideration of first principles. What does a feminist perspective have to offer an analysis of the American business corporation and its place in our capitalist economy? How might such a perspective generate original research in the area of corporation law? Would a more "feminist" corporation necessarily be a less profitable one? If feminist law reforms came at a net economic cost to firms or shareholders (which is not the foreseeable result, necessarily) might the proposed law reforms be justifiable, …

Telling A Less Suspicious Story: Notes Toward A Non-Skeptical Approach To Legal/Cultural Analysis, Paul Schiff Berman Jan 2001

Telling A Less Suspicious Story: Notes Toward A Non-Skeptical Approach To Legal/Cultural Analysis, Paul Schiff Berman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In the generation of law and society research that emerged with the formation of the Law and Society Association, sociolegal scholars, building on the Legal Realist attack on formalism, told a story primarily about the possibility of social progress through law. Over the past two decades, however, sociolegal scholars have become increasingly disenchanted with the reformist project. These writers, influenced by Michel Foucault and other postmodern theorists, have begun to see law not as an instrument for dispensing justice, but as a constitutive societal force shaping social relations, constructing meaning, and defining categories of behavior. As part of the move …

In Praise Of The Treatise Writer: Law's Special Knowledge, Ellen M. Bublick

Seattle University Law Review

Dobbs, the author of the foremost treatise on tort law, and Hayden, the author of a number of thought provoking articles, have written a book with a clear structure—one that carefully and methodically elucidates the doctrinal framework of state tort law. The book also addresses problems in tort theory and practice and outlines major supplements and alternatives to existing tort remedies.

How To Talk About Religion, James Boyd White Jan 2001

How To Talk About Religion, James Boyd White

Articles

Our experience, supported we think by that of others, is that it is most difficult to do this well, whether we are trying to talk about religion within a discipline, such as law or psychology or anthropology, or even in more informal ways, with our friends and colleagues. There are many reasons for this: It is in the nature of religious experience to be ineffable or mysterious, at least for some people or in some religions; different religions imagine the world and its human inhabitants, and their histories, in ways that are enormously different; and there is no superlanguage into …

The Banquet Type-Scene In The Parables Of Jesus, Fazadudin Hosein Jan 2001

The Banquet Type-Scene In The Parables Of Jesus, Fazadudin Hosein

Dissertations

Biblical narratives abound in ancient literary and oral conventions. One such convention is the type-scene. The study of the type-scene originated in 1933 with Walter Arend who studied compositional recurrent patterns and variations in the epics of Homer. Later, the study was developed by Robert Alter inhis treatment of biblical narratives. The type-scene was a narratorial device used by ancient orators and writers in which traditional elements of repetitive compositional patterns were told and retold ininnovative ways to an audience, raising their expectation and sometimes causing surprise. Conventional elements that make up the type-scene were catchwords, motifs, characters, and themes. …

Reflexive Moments: Negotiating Researcher Roles In Participant Observation, Trudy Milburn, Richard J. Wilkins, Karen W. Wilkins Jan 2001

Reflexive Moments: Negotiating Researcher Roles In Participant Observation, Trudy Milburn, Richard J. Wilkins, Karen W. Wilkins

Iowa Journal of Communication

This essay addresses how, throughout ethnographies of communication, researchers (re)negotiate their roles and voices with the speech communities they study. The authors demonstrate how a (re)negotiation process occurs throughout moments of pre-fieldwork where a researcher struggles with how to make sense of his or her role in relation to those studied, fieldwork where a member manages to tack back and forth between the role of member and the role of researcher, and late stages of fieldwork where role (re)definition comes after spending many months in the field. The moments of data collection occurred in three scenes that are a Finnish …
