Ceramic Survey Analysis In The Western Mediterranean : Examining Phoenician Implications In Western Sicily, Leah M. Stevens Jan 2001

Ceramic Survey Analysis In The Western Mediterranean : Examining Phoenician Implications In Western Sicily, Leah M. Stevens

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this project was to better understand cultural change over time in Western Sicily. We performed archaeological survey in Western Sicily to gather evidence of early contact with Phoenicians in this particular area. Research was conducted over a six-week period of survey at Mokarta, near the city of Salemi. Collection at Site 159 included retrieval of over 1200 diagnostic pottery shreds, which were analyzed for cultural characteristics. Significant findings included an artifact-rich site with a nearly complete chronological record, ranging from the Prehistoric Iron-Age to the Late Mediaeval period. Evidence of Phoenician inter-island trade during the early centuries …

Textiles : Function And Symbolism Within The Social And Ritual Systems Of Sumba, Eastern Indonesia, Jennifer A. Quincey

Honors Capstones

This thesis focuses on the place of textiles within the traditional social and ritual systems of Sumba, Eastern Indonesia; also considered is the cosmological significance of motifs depicted in these cloths as they relate to Sumbanese rituals. Textiles are cultural condensations in woven form. As such, they provide a window into the cosmologies of the people producing them. This research examines the social uses of Sumbanese textiles and also attempts to uncover dominant ritual symbols depicted therein through utilizing Turner’s analytical framework of symbolic analysis (1967:19-47). The rituals examined for this purpose are confined to marriage and funeral ceremonies. Aspects …

The authors of this two-part essay are identified as H.E. Kuchka. H.E. is the abbreviation for Human Ecosystems. Kuchka is the group: Felice S. Wyndham, Eric C. Visualization Of Transit Mobility And Performance, Anibal A. Galindez, Ricardo Mireles-Córdova Jan 2001

Visualization Of Transit Mobility And Performance, Anibal A. Galindez, Ricardo Mireles-Córdova

Journal of Public Transportation

The visualization of a transit mobility model is presented in this article. The method described shows transit system capacity and utilization by area and time of day using ride-check data as a proxy for real-time information. It indicates how public transportation resources can be used in a more efficient and effective manner. The visualization process requires the creation of a time/location data matrix of the variable to be analyzed and the linking of the performance measure to spatial data. This creates a temporal Geographic Information System (GIS) platform for the entire transit system or systems at the regional level. The …

The Fort Clark Archeology Project, 2000-2001 Historical Archeological Investigations., William J. Hunt Jr.

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Historical archeological work during the summers of 2000 and 2001 has been directed toward development and installation of a series of interpretive panels relating to the history, archeology, and peoples living at Fort Clark. In anticipation of this, investigations in 2000 included small scale testing and large scale geophysical surveys at the village and both trading posts. Fieldwork in 2001 was more focused and utilized geophysical survey data from both years to guide a multi-university field school excavation at Fort Clark. Excavation goals were to clarify the structural history and evolution of the post, discern functional change in one portion …

Self-Determination And The American Indian: A Case Study, Milo Colton Jan 2001

Self-Determination And The American Indian: A Case Study, Milo Colton

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

The United States has repeatedly victimized indigenous populations by stripping away tribal sovereignty and self-determination. One such example is Indian tribal reservations historical absence of jurisdictional autonomy. Prior to 1953, Indian tribal reservations shared jurisdiction with the federal government, allowing some semblance of autonomy. However, passage of Congress’s Public Law 280 erased this form of self-determination. This law enabled states to assume all civil and criminal jurisdiction over Indian tribal reservations. More recently, however, reservations have slowly begun to regain jurisdictional autonomy through the process of retrocession: the act of returning something taken. The achievements of the Winnebago Tribe of …

The Kindness Of Strangers: Interdisciplinary Foundations Of A Duty To Act, Nancy Levit Jan 2001

The Kindness Of Strangers: Interdisciplinary Foundations Of A Duty To Act, Nancy Levit

Faculty Works

In American tort law, one has historically been allowed to do nothing and not be held liable for injuries to others resulting from that inactivity. Viewed perhaps more charitably, tort law does not punish citizens for minding their own business. People generally have no affirmative duties to aid or protect others -- you can watch blind people walk into traffic and not be sued for failing to stop them. It's not nice, but it's not tortious. This essay examines the no duty to act rule in torts and the policy reasons typically offered in support of its enduring presence. It …

Legal Culture And The Practice: Postmodern Depiction Of The Rule Of Law, Jeffrey E. Thomas Jan 2001

Legal Culture And The Practice: Postmodern Depiction Of The Rule Of Law, Jeffrey E. Thomas

Faculty Works

Professor Thomas suggests that the television series the practice breaks from tradition by portraying the law as arbitrary and subject to manipulation. On one hand, its narratives show that law may require the guilty to be set free. On the other hand, the law sometimes fails to protect the innocent. Outcomes often turn on extralegal factors such as luck, race, or heroic efforts. This portrayal is a "postmodern" depiction of the rule of law. The narratives from the practice deconstruct the traditional rule of law hierarchy by showing that the rule of man can lead to more just results. The …

Challenging The Gendered Hegemony Of Space: Acknowledging ‘Difference’ In Development Planning, Laura Hebert Jan 2001

Challenging The Gendered Hegemony Of Space: Acknowledging ‘Difference’ In Development Planning, Laura Hebert

Human Rights & Human Welfare

A review of Gender, Planning and Human Rights, edited by Tovi Fenster. New York: Routledge, 1999 (International Studies of Women and Place Series). 240pp.

Traditionally, feminist efforts to promote and protect women’s rights as human rights have focused on legalistic strategies, such as advocating for the inclusion of gender-specific concerns in international human rights conventions, the implementation of national legislation, the revision of laws that are discriminatory to women, and the strengthening of police and judicial procedures. In recent years, however, feminist activists and academics have recognized that advancing the status and empowerment of women requires recognition of the multiple …

United States Asylum Law In The Context Of Sexual Orientation And Gender Identity: Justice For The Transgendered, Fatima Mohyuddin Jan 2001

United States Asylum Law In The Context Of Sexual Orientation And Gender Identity: Justice For The Transgendered, Fatima Mohyuddin

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

This article examines the recognition given to sexual minorities through United States asylum law. This article begins with a general explanation of the evolution of asylum law and an overview of the different categories of persons eligible to apply for asylum, particularly persons facing persecution as a social group. Then the article discusses the traditional construction of gender and sexuality in lieu of persons who do not fit into the dimorphic, male/female, gender and sexual categories. These sexual minorities often face extreme hardship, government persecution and death in their home countries for stepping outside of culturally imposed sexual and gender …
