"Image Of God'' And Object Relations Theory Of Human Development: Their Integration And Mutual Contribution To Development Of God-Images, God-Concepts, And Relationship With God, Laura Emily Palik

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

In an endeavor to further the work of integration of psychology and theology, this theoretical-conceptual research study examined (a) the meaning of the biblical description of humanity's creation in God's image (Gen. 1.26-27), (b) the relationship between the conceptualization of humans as "image of God" and object relations theory of human development, and (c) the mutual contribution of "image of God" and object relational development to the internal god-images (object-representations) and cognitive god-concepts that persons develop. Ways Of Knowing About Weapons: The Cold War's End At The Los Alamos National Laboratory, Laura Agnes Mcnamara May 2001

Ways Of Knowing About Weapons: The Cold War's End At The Los Alamos National Laboratory, Laura Agnes Mcnamara

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation addresses questions of knowledge, identity, scientific activity and social reproduction among nuclear weapons experts at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Throughout the Cold War, the laboratory's weapons community produced an enormous body of knowledge about nuclear weapons through engaging iteratively in an experimental cycle that consisted of designing, building and testing experimental nuclear explosives. This design and test cycle also fulfilled critical social functions. providing a site for the reproduction of skills and understandings in novice weaponeers as well as an engine for the ongoing integration of the many "ways of knowing" that existed in the laboratory. However, …

Multidisciplinarity And Cognitive Science, Barbara Von Eckardt May 2001

Multidisciplinarity And Cognitive Science, Barbara Von Eckardt

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The aim of Schunn, Crowley and Okada’s (1998) study is to address the question of whether the current state of cognitive science, as represented by Cognitive Science and the Cognitive Science Society, “reflects the multidisciplinary ideals of its foundation.” To properly interpret and respond to their results, we need to ask a prior question: What is cognitive science’s multidisciplinary ideal? There are at least two conceptions—a “localist” conception, which seems to be implicit in Schunn, Crowley and Okada’s discussion, and a “holist” conception. I argue that while both have been endorsed by some cognitive scientists, there are reasons for preferring …
