Traditional And Non-Traditional Dispute Settlement In The Federated States Of Micronesia, Kris Tina Yurgin Cummings
Traditional And Non-Traditional Dispute Settlement In The Federated States Of Micronesia, Kris Tina Yurgin Cummings
Dissertations and Theses
The current U.S. mediation system is founded on a paradigm of individual focus and Western values. This model may fail to represent the various cultural components disputants from more collective cultures may bring to the mediation process. In addition, the U.S. mediation system relies on the collaboration of two or more disputants to confront the issues between them. Again, this model presupposes that confrontation is an appropriate means of conflict resolution.
The purpose of this study is to offer a different perspective of dispute settlement as practiced in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). Cultural values that emphasize the social …

Indian Tribal Recognition: The Historical Evidence Quagmire To Prove Tribal Status, Pilar Thomas
Indian Tribal Recognition: The Historical Evidence Quagmire To Prove Tribal Status, Pilar Thomas
Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)
The federal government has an elaborate and comprehensive set of regulations to recognize Indian groups as tribes. This administrative process requires exhaustive documentation and considerable scientific analysis to prove that the group can meet seven mandatory criteria. In addition to the administrative process, Congress continues to exercise its authority to legislatively recognize tribes. The author reviews four recognition cases — two legislative and two administrative -to understand the use of historical information and to evaluate differences in results between these two processes. Based on this review, recommendations for changes include incorporation of international law concepts, previously suggested policies, and traditional …

A Content Analysis Of The Leadership Themes Portrayed In The Dilbert Comic Strip, Stephanie L. Mccollum
A Content Analysis Of The Leadership Themes Portrayed In The Dilbert Comic Strip, Stephanie L. Mccollum
Theses and Graduate Projects
Comic strips provide a graphic glimpse into the collective consciousness of a culture and its time in history. Scott Adams' popular Dilbert comic strip provides not only humor to its large audience but a social commentary on today's corporate work culture. Through the imaginative world of Dilbert, Scott Adams exposes the contradictory underlying values, attitudes and feelings of today's corporate work culture and its leadership. This paper compares the leadership themes portrayed in the Dilbert comic strip to the Augsburg Leadership Development model. One hundred Dilbert comic strips were analyzed, categorized and compared to the key leadership attributes and …

The Wreck Of The Rockaway: The Archaeology Of A Great Lakes Scow Schooner, Kenneth R. Pott
The Wreck Of The Rockaway: The Archaeology Of A Great Lakes Scow Schooner, Kenneth R. Pott
Masters Theses
During the 19th century, Great Lakes shipping played a vital role in the development of the economies of the United States and Canada. Regional shipyards built thousands of vessels to distribute coal, lumber, grain, iron ore and other goods throughout the Great Lakes network. In time, certain designs were selected for the advantage they offered over others employed in the same trade. The scow schooner was one class of carrier which attained a high level of use in the Lakes region.
This study examines the scow schooner Rockaway and the economic factors which influenced the building and use of this …

Migration And Cultural Change: A Role For Gender And Social Networks?, Sara R. Curran, Abigail C. Saguy
Migration And Cultural Change: A Role For Gender And Social Networks?, Sara R. Curran, Abigail C. Saguy
Journal of International Women's Studies
From the Introduction:
To incorporate the insights from the literature on gender and migration, we focus upon three key concepts that have emerged regarding the role of social networks, households, and communities for affecting migration processes. The three key concepts we interrogate are: “social embeddedness” (Portes and Sensenbrenner 1993), “circular and cumulative causation” (Massey 1990), and “relative deprivation” (Stark 1991). We propose considering these three concepts through the lens of a third area of research, the sociology of culture, and we draw upon ideas about identity formation, trust, and normative expectations. Our empirical examples come primarily from Thailand where we …
