“Making-Face, Making-Heart”: The Spiritual Foundations Of An Indigenous Pedagogy, Ralph Casas Nov 2001

“Making-Face, Making-Heart”: The Spiritual Foundations Of An Indigenous Pedagogy, Ralph Casas

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

The author argues for the construction of pedagogical strategies that respect the learner’s context and cognitive framework, aiming for the development of an indigenous ecology of education. He brings the insights of Latin American and U.S. Latino/a theology into consideration, suggesting that the dialogue between Christian and indigenous Mesoamerican religious traditions can be both productive and practical.

Determinants Of Effective Population Size For Loci With Different Modes Of Inheritance, Jay F. Storz, U. Ramakrishnan, S. C. Alberts Nov 2001

Determinants Of Effective Population Size For Loci With Different Modes Of Inheritance, Jay F. Storz, U. Ramakrishnan, S. C. Alberts

Jay F. Storz Publications

Here we report an assessment of the determinants of effective population size (Ne) in species with overlapping generations. Specifically, we used a stochastic demographic model to investigate the influence of different life-history variables on Ne/N (where N = population census number) and the influence of sex differences in life-history variables on Ne for loci with dif¬ferent modes of inheritance. We applied an individual-based modeling approach to two datasets: one from a natural popu¬lation of savannah baboons (Papio cynocephalus) in the Amboseli basin of southern Kenya and one from a human tribal …

Adjustment Personality Trait And The Process Of Grieving Among Parents Who Have Had Children Die Of Sids, Agnes Melissa Ibanez Nov 2001

Adjustment Personality Trait And The Process Of Grieving Among Parents Who Have Had Children Die Of Sids, Agnes Melissa Ibanez

Student Work

The research examines emotional adjustment personality trait as related to intensity of grief experienced by parents who have had a child die of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). The NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) neuroticism scale measured emotional adjustment trait, and Perinatal Grief Scale (PGS) measured grief intensity. Thirty-three participants from 18 states were recruited via SIDS Alliance and SIDS Network websites. Results supported the hypothesis that there is a direct significant correlation between emotional adjustment and grief experiences. Other results showed that grief intensity was inversely correlated with years since child’s death, conscientiousness, and extraversion. Conscientiousness was found to directly …

Actions Speak Louder: Women In Caribbean Documentaries Of Everyday Life, Ian Craig Nov 2001

Actions Speak Louder: Women In Caribbean Documentaries Of Everyday Life, Ian Craig

Journal of International Women's Studies

Introduction:

This paper focuses particularly on two recent documentaries of everyday life featuring Haitian women, Claudette Coulanges’s Chercher la vie and Rigoberto López’s Puerto Príncipe mío. The contribution of these works to the existing corpus of documentaries on Haiti is assessed. Gender differences in patterns of discourse and activity are analysed in order to clarify the social situation of women in contemporary Port-au-Prince. The films corroborate other cited evidence that women are the backbone of Haitian daily life, sustaining activity in market places, the factory floor and the home. However, their discourse and activities suggest that their constant struggle …

Attitudes Toward And Usages Of Humor Among Practicing Marriage And Family Therapists, Nicholas Todd Wilkens Nov 2001

Attitudes Toward And Usages Of Humor Among Practicing Marriage And Family Therapists, Nicholas Todd Wilkens

Dissertations

A descriptive study was conducted exploring attitudes toward and usages of humor among marriage and family therapists. This was an internet study, novel for both St. Mary's University and for marriage and family therapy research in general.

The literature review highlighted the research and theory that has evolved over the past century, addressing the topic of humor in mental and physical health and development. It was noticed that humor has not been a significant topic of study in marriage and family therapy research, nor have attitudes toward and usages of humor been measured among any of the health professions, though …

Winning On For The Gipper: Diversity Strategies And Initiative At Notre Dame, Hugh R. Page Jr., Ph. D., Richard Pierce Ph. D., Gina Shropshire Ph. D., Lynn Todman Ph. D.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

One of the enduring images linked to the University of Notre Dame is that of injured football player George Gipp imploring Coach Knute Rockne to "Win One for the Gipper. " Similarly, people of color and conscience at Notre Dame struggle with formidable challenges in implementing diversity into areas of faculty retention, university initiatives and community outreach, all while remaining sane. The panelists will discuss innovative successes and continuing efforts that can be adapted by others seeking a game plan for diversity.

Academentia: Physiological Stress, Toxic Work Sites And The Neutralization Of Blackness By The Whiteness Standards Of Professionalization, Enoch H. Page Ph.D. Oct 2001

Academentia: Physiological Stress, Toxic Work Sites And The Neutralization Of Blackness By The Whiteness Standards Of Professionalization, Enoch H. Page Ph.D.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

Using auto-ethnographic methods, supplementing by current race theories, along with interviews from other scholars, I regard academentia as a form of professionalism most readily communicable to academics of color seeking advance. It can also infect those whose embrace of blackness (widely defined across cultures) is the least tolerant of the racial designs of white cultural practices. Where in the interest of students and colleagues, such academics challenge the whiteness criteria defining academic success, most of their peers adhere to the racial standards of professionalism.

Multiple Perspectives On A Failed Attempt At Diversity, Fay Akindes, Michele Gee Ph.D., Farida Khan, Mary Kay Schleiter Ph.D.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

Four faculty members from diverse disciplines and backgrounds use a polyvocal method of analysis to discuss a set of patterns which insure the failure of a campus to retain most faculty and teaching academic staff of color for more than a few years.

The Recruitment And Retention Of Students Of Color At Private Institutions, Anthony Cortese Oct 2001

The Recruitment And Retention Of Students Of Color At Private Institutions, Anthony Cortese

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

This session presents a longitudinal study of recruitment and retention of students of color at a predominantly white university in the American Southwest. The institution was able to increase minority student enrollment 14 percent in fewer than ten years. This was accomplished through the careful development, implementation and evaluation of a policy designed to recruit and retain minority students. The specifics of this policy and how it may be used as a model for other predominantly white institutions are discussed.

Making The Canon: Whose Postcolonial Literature Is It?, Sonia Delgado-Tall Ph.D. Oct 2001

Making The Canon: Whose Postcolonial Literature Is It?, Sonia Delgado-Tall Ph.D.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

The presenter argues that post-colonial literatures are increasingly "culturally" appropriated by Western literacy critics and institutions. Their so-called incorporation into the category of World literatures has had little impact on North/South political and economic relations and Western representations of non-western cultures in popular culture. Moreover, the process of decolonization needs to be re-activated by African scholars from the South living in the North as well as within African universities.
