Doing Science Learning Life: Activities With Spiritual Lessons, Clifton Keller

All Books

Science Fun for You and Your Children

The author claims that many students are afraid of college level math and science courses and give up on lifelong dreams. However by getting involved with activities related to science, rather than memorizing facts, some decide to “bite the bullet” and take advanced studies. As a teacher, he learned the processes learned along the way are more important than the facts. For that reason, the book is centered on a dozen process skills such as Observing, Measuring, Classifying, Communicating, etc. Piaget assumed: “Children build on THEIR own knowledge based on THEIR own experiences.” …

Hard Water: Politics And Water Supply In Milwaukee, 1870-1995, Kate Foss-Mollan

Purdue University Press Books

Hard Water: Politics And Water Supply In Milwaukee, 1870-1995 by educator and urban studies specialist Kate Foss-Mollan is the documented and historical account of the water supply of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Foss-Mollan blends urban history, technology, biology, research, and political science into a remarkably intriguing and informative saga. From conflicts over supplying poor neighborhoods to partisan debates regarding the necessity of a filtration plant, Hard Water spans over a century with an eye-opening account of the wrangling, machinations, and more all about a seemingly simple drink of water. Very highly recommended for American urban studies reading lists.

Dose-Banding Of Cytotoxic Drugs: A New Concept In Cancer Chemotherapy, Gj Sewell, Rj Plumridge Jan 2001

Dose-Banding Of Cytotoxic Drugs: A New Concept In Cancer Chemotherapy, Gj Sewell, Rj Plumridge

School of Health Professions

Doses of cytotoxic drugs have traditionally been calculated on the basis of body surface area (BSA), the only exception being carboplatin, for which the dose is calculated on the basis of renal function and targeted area under the plasma concentration–time curve. The use of BSA for dosage calculation arises from Phase I drug development, when animal doses are recalculated for humans on the basis of BSA. This practice has continued into the later drug development phases and, after marketing approval, into clinical practice.1,2 As a result, each dose of cytotoxic drug is individualized for each patient in accordance with current …

Maerl - A Spectacular Firth Of Clyde Habitat., Jm Hall-Spencer Jan 2001

Maerl - A Spectacular Firth Of Clyde Habitat., Jm Hall-Spencer

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Pioneering marine biologists were drawn to study the diversity of organisms found in the Firth of Clyde throughout the 19th century. In 1885, naturalists decided to study this diversity in detail and moved a floating laboratory (the ‘Ark’) from the relatively impoverished waters of the Firth of Forth to Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae. The move proved a great success and one of the numerous advances made over the next decade was the discovery of local maerl communities. The proximity of a range of marine habitats located within sheltered waters clinched the decision to establish the first Scottish marine …

Treatment Of Musculoskeletal Pain With The Sting Of The Stinging Nettle: Urtica Dioica, Colin F Randall

Peninsula Medical School Theses

Introduction The author's interest in the therapeutic potential of the sting of nettles began with the presentation of two patients in his general practice surgery who were self-prescribing nettle sting for their arthritis pain. The publication of these two case reports produced responses from four other doctors about similar cases. Historical and contemporary research An extensive literature and database review produced few references from the medical literature but numerous anecdotal references from herbal and folklore sources of worldwide internal and external use of nettle since Roman times. The author has been asked to contribute two chapters on the historical and …

Waste Management In Palm-Oleo Sdn. Bhd, Ramesh Ramasamy

Student Works (2000-2009)

Oleochemical industry in Malaysia has been diversifying significantly due to the availability of raw materials (palm oil) and the high demand for downstream products such as fatty acids, fatty alcohols and glycerine. The growth of oleochemical industries is further enhanced by fluctuations io petroleum price and regular animal diseases, which made tallow-based fats unreliable. Environmental awareness is growing rapidly in Malaysia. There is growing realization of the need to balance industrial and economic development with environmental preservation and protection, as well as, with efficient use of energy sources in order to achieve sustainable development. Extensive waste management studies were focused …

Influence Of Androstenedione On Sedentary Female Rats, Janet E. Steele

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The pUfPose of this study was to examine the influence of androstenedione supplementation on plasma testosterone, cortisol, and cholesterol, mean arterial pressure (MAP), body weight, organ weights, and bone mineral density (BMD) in female rats. At age 10 weeks, an initial BMD measure was made. Rats in the andro group (n = 13) received implants designed to deliver 1 μg androstenedione per gram body wt per day. Rats in the control group (n = 13) received similar implants containing dextrose. After 8 weeks an arterial catheter was surgically implanted. MAP was measured for 30 minutes during home cage rest and …

Comparative Floristic Diversity Of Spring Creek And Nine-Mile Prairies, Nebraska, Kay Lynn Kottas Jan 2001

Comparative Floristic Diversity Of Spring Creek And Nine-Mile Prairies, Nebraska, Kay Lynn Kottas

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Spring Creek Prairie (SCP), in Lancaster County, Nebraska, was purchased by Audubon Nebraska in 1998 and is being restored for educational purposes and scientific study. It is a remnant tallgrass prairie of247 ha (610 acres) that was grazed for a century but never plowed. The research was conducted to obtain baseline information about diversity and abundance of upland species, for assessment of management practices. Specimens were collected from September, 1998, through October, 2000, and an inventory was produced. These data were compared with similar data from Nine-Mile Prairie (NMP), a nearby and essentially ungrazed virgin tallgrass prairie that is now …

Simulation Study And Instability Of Adaptive Control, Zhongshan Wu Jan 2001

Simulation Study And Instability Of Adaptive Control, Zhongshan Wu

LSU Master's Theses

The Minimum-degree Pole Placement algorithm for Self-tuning Regulator design and the Recursive Least-square method and the projection algorithm for plant estimation are studied first in this thesis. Simulation studies for the estimator and controller algorithms are mainly undertaken after describing how to use MATLAB S-function in detail. Not only do Simulation experiments illustrates how and how well the MDPP and RLS algorithms work, but also show how to write and debug MATLAB codes for S-function programs. The robustness of the adaptive control system is intensively discussed subsequently. By using an estimator resistant to the noise contamination, the adaptive control system …

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

Alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), an acute phase protein in serum assayed by single radial immunodiffusion using a commercially available kit, was found to significantly increase in mice infected with influenza A and B viruses. Experiments were run to determine the rate of increase of serum AGP and its relation to other influenza disease parameters, including lung consolidation, development of lung virus titres, decline in arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2), histopathological changes in the lung, and death of the animal. Maximal AGP levels occurred by day 3 in the animals, at about the same time lung virus titres reached their peak and inflammatory …

Exploring The Potential Usefulness Of Binary Space Partitions In Architectural Representations, Michael Hoon Jan 2001

Exploring The Potential Usefulness Of Binary Space Partitions In Architectural Representations, Michael Hoon

Theses

There have been recent advances developed within the computer gaming industry that have made real-time first-person perspective spatial experiences feasible on the personal computer. Principally through the use of binary space partition tree structures, developers of threedimensional gaming environments are able to convey to computer users a convincing sense of movement through space. The technology behind these advances may be termed as a particularization of Virtual Reality. This paper will outline research intended to determine the possible usefulness of binary space partitions in the fields of architectural education and practice. The feasibility of this technology was studied by directly observing …

The Right To Self-Government After Bush V. Gore, Paul D. Carrington, H. Jefferson Powell Jan 2001

The Right To Self-Government After Bush V. Gore, Paul D. Carrington, H. Jefferson Powell

Faculty Scholarship

'Bush v. Gore' was decided a year ago. As expected, it evoked a flood of journalistic and academic commentary. The present authors write to express dissatisfaction with the resulting literature. They find it in general to be dominated by the usual political discourse conducted from opposite ends of the usual political spectrum, with both ends sharing an assumption that the Supreme Court was animated in its decision by the usual political motives that it has become conventional to see in the actions of that institution. Left almost completely out of view have been the more personal selfish motives of the …

On Law And Chastity, Robert E. Rodes Jan 2001

On Law And Chastity, Robert E. Rodes

Journal Articles

When Dwight Eisenhower was President, and the baby boomers of today were but gleams in the eyes of their monogamous parents, it was well understood that chastity was the prevailing social norm.

On the whole, the standard was reinforced by the social ambiance. It was not at all difficult for people of relatively chaste mind to go for days, sometimes weeks, without encountering much of anything at which they could justly take offense. In most environments, social discourse was relatively free of explicit sex, and even sexual innuendo was far from pervasive. Films and broadcasting were closely censored, and detailed …

Religious Claims And The Dynamics Of Argument, M. Cathleen Kaveny Jan 2001

Religious Claims And The Dynamics Of Argument, M. Cathleen Kaveny

Journal Articles

This Article investigates the questions whether and when religious claims may enter into public debate about important political issues by considering the purposes of argument in the public square. These purposes include: (1) argument as self-disclosure; (2) argument as persuasion; and (3) argument as bulwark against engagement with the ideas of others. The Article argues that restrictions on the use of religious claims in public deliberations and discussion impede the legitimate functions of public argument as self-disclosing and persuasive activities. In contrast, such restrictions contribute to the use of argument as bulwark, which is arguably destructive to public deliberation in …
