Firefly Flashing Is Controlled By Gating Oxygen To Light-Emitting Cells, G. S. Timmins, F. J. Robb, C. M. Wilmot, S. K. Jackson, H. M. Swartz

Dartmouth Scholarship

Although many aspects of firefly bioluminescence are understood, the mechanism by which adult fireflies produce light as discrete rapid flashes is not. Here we examine the most postulated theory, that flashing is controlled by gating oxygen access to the light-emitting cells (photocytes). According to this theory, the dark state represents repression of bioluminescence by limiting oxygen, which is required for bioluminescence; relief from this repression by transiently allowing oxygen access to the photocytes allows the flash. We show that normobaric hyperoxia releases the repression of light emission in the dark state of both spontaneously flashing and non-flashing fireflies, causing continual …

Evolutionary Analysis In Law: Some Objections Considered, Owen D. Jones

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This Article appears in a special issue of the Brooklyn Law Review on DNA: Lessons from the Past - Problems for the Future. It first addresses why law needs insights from behavioral biology, and then identifies and responds to a variety of structural and conceptual barriers to such evolutionary analysis in law.

Should Shareholders Have A Greater Say Over Executive Pay??, Randall S. Thomas, Brian R. Cheffins Jan 2001

Should Shareholders Have A Greater Say Over Executive Pay??, Randall S. Thomas, Brian R. Cheffins

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Executive pay arrangements in Britain's publicly quoted companies have been subjected to much criticism in recent years. Proposals that shareholders should have a greater direct say over managerial remuneration have been a by-product of the concerns expressed. Debate on this point, however, has been largely speculative. This is because there is little evidence available in the United Kingdom indicating how shareholders would exercise any new powers they might be given. This paper addresses the evidentiary gap by drawing upon the experience in the United States, where empirical work indicates that shareholder voting only operates as a potential check when pay …

Getting Past Democracy, Edward L. Rubin Jan 2001

Getting Past Democracy, Edward L. Rubin

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The tension between our concept of democracy and the government we actually possess is well known, despite our insistent efforts to claim that the term "democracy" accurately describes our governmental system. One area where this tension has been apparent is American constitutionalism. The conflict between our concept of democracy and the institution of judicial review became a political issue when the Supreme Court placed itself in opposition to Progressive Era and New Deal legislation. This same conflict subsequently served as a central concern of the Legal Process School, which indelibly characterized it as the "counter-majoritarian difficulty."' The more far-reaching and …

Brain Plasticity And Spanish Moss In Biolegal Analysis, Erin O'Connor Jan 2001

Brain Plasticity And Spanish Moss In Biolegal Analysis, Erin O'Connor

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The field of law and biology is growing rapidly, and the good scholarship typically has much to do with Owen Jones... The general message that Professor Jones disseminates in his articles is important. Law cannot reach peak effectiveness unless it is built on a sound behavioral model, and no model of human nature is ultimately sound unless it is consistent with the insights from behavioral biology. And the beauty of behavioral biology, for one who uses behavioral models, is that it tells us something about human tastes, preferences, and cognitive biases and limitations.

Homogenized Law: Can The United States Learn From African Mistakes?, Beverly I. Moran Jan 2001

Homogenized Law: Can The United States Learn From African Mistakes?, Beverly I. Moran

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

For the last fifty years we have seen an outflow of United States laws to developing countries. This legal outflow has caused problems of enforcement in societies that do not share the values, needs or concerns of the law producing state. Using law reform in Eritrea as a case study, the article asks what will happen in the United States when we become the recipient, rather than the exporter, of maladapted laws that serve the purpose of others instead of serving the unique needs of the United States and its economy.

Expression Of Mslec1- And Mslec2-Antisense Genes In Alfalfa Plant Lines Causes Severe Embryogenic, Developmental And Reproductive Abnormalities, Laurence M. Brill, Cory J. Evans, Ann M. Hirsch Jan 2001

Expression Of Mslec1- And Mslec2-Antisense Genes In Alfalfa Plant Lines Causes Severe Embryogenic, Developmental And Reproductive Abnormalities, Laurence M. Brill, Cory J. Evans, Ann M. Hirsch

Biology Faculty Works

Although it has been proposed that plant lectins play a number of roles, the function of these proteins in normal plant growth and development has been unclear. To analyze the functions of putative alfalfa lectin genes, lines of transgenic alfalfa plants expressing approximately half of the open reading frame of MsLEC1 or MsLEC2, in the antisense or sense orientation, were established and analyzed. The antisense plants displayed severe abnormalities in embryogenesis, and both vegetative and reproductive development were perturbed. Some differences were observed between MsLEC1- and MsLEC2-antisense plants, and abnormalities were especially severe during the early stages of development in …

City Of Edmond V. Robinson: The Coercion-Standing Test-A New Approach To Religious Symbols Under The Establishment Clause?, David S. Hill Jan 2001

City Of Edmond V. Robinson: The Coercion-Standing Test-A New Approach To Religious Symbols Under The Establishment Clause?, David S. Hill

Utah Law Review

Establishment Clause jurisprudence is fraught with a myriad of competing philosophies and intricate tests. Among commentators, judges, and lawyers, no one is completely satisfied with any of the approaches created thus far. Such conflict and complexity invites the temptation to simplify matters by employing more heavy-handed approaches aimed at displacing ambiguities with absolutes, or refusing to address them at all. However, when dealing with a sensitive topic like religious liberty, more sensitive tools must be used. The imperfection of the endorsement test may not always yield the best results, but it does address many of the viable constitutional concerns inherent …

Reward Frequency: Effects On Flower Choices Made By Different Honeybee Races In Turkey, İbrahi̇m Çakmak, Harrington Wells Jan 2001

Reward Frequency: Effects On Flower Choices Made By Different Honeybee Races In Turkey, İbrahi̇m Çakmak, Harrington Wells

Turkish Journal of Zoology

We compared the European honeybee races Apis mellifera armeniaca, A.m. caucasica, A.m. cypria, and A.m. syriaca. These subspecies are endemic to very different habitats. Additionally, they are exposed to very different levels of predation. A.m. caucasica exists where honeybee predators typically are rare, while the remaining subspecies have ranges that coincide with areas where honeybee predators are abundant. Foraging decisions of workers visiting artificial flower patches containing blue, white, and yellow flowers were recorded. We tested whether foragers responded to differences in rewarding flower frequency among flower color morphs. Division of labor occurred among foragers of each race; some bees …

A Study On The Feeding Biology Of Laudakia (=Agama) Stellio (L. 1758) (Lacertilia: Agamidae) Populations In The Antalya Region, Serdar Düşen, Mehmet Öz

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The feeding biology of Laudakia (=Agama) stellio (L. 1758) was studied using 91 specimens collected from the Antalya region over two consecutive years (1995 and 1996). A total of 1224 prey items were identifed and their frequency of occurrence and percent of diet were tabulated. The majority of the diet consisted of the class Insecta (99.18%), and within this class, Hymenoptera (72.21%) was the major order represented, primarily by the families Formicidae (49.83%) and Apidae (16.74%). In addition to insects, L. stellio feeds on plant material, insect larvae and eggs, and even snails, showing opportunist feeding behavior.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The effect of cold storage on the adult longevity, fecundity and sex ratio of Apanteles galleriae Wilkinson, a koinobiont, solitary and early instar larval endoparasitoid of the Small Wax Moth Achoria grisella Fabr. was investigated. The rearing of both parasitoid and host cultures and experiments related to the effect of storing Apanteles galleriae adults at low temperature (+ 6°C) were conducted at 25 ± 1°C, 60 ± 5% RH under a photoperiod of 12:12 (L:D). Cold storage (+ 6°C) considerably influenced the adult longevity, fecundity and sex ratio of the parasitoid. Experimental evidence showed that 85.27% of adults died after …

Ultrastructural Observations On The Development Of Some Actinosporean Types Within Their Oligochaete Hosts, Ahmet Özer, Rodney Wootten Jan 2001

Ultrastructural Observations On The Development Of Some Actinosporean Types Within Their Oligochaete Hosts, Ahmet Özer, Rodney Wootten

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Synactinomyxon type 1, aurantiactinomyxon type 3, echinactinomyxon type 5 and raabeia type 4 were studied at the TEM level in order to determine the developmental stages within their oligochaete hosts. All the actinosporean types studied had uninucleate cells as the earliest stage of development. The formation of a subsequent binucleate cell stage was either due to the division of the nucleus in a uninucleate cell or the plasmogamy of two uninucleate cells. The earliest pansporocyst formation seen was two outer somatic cells surrounding two inner generative \alpha and \beta cells in all the actinosporean types studied. However, the formation of …

A Study On Endocrine Cells In The Midgut Of Agrotis Segetum (Denn. And Schiff.) (Lepidoptera:Noctuidae), Nursel Gül, Hakki Sayar, Nesri̇n Özsoy, Cevat Ayvali

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The structure of midgut endocrine cells of Agrotis segetum larvae was examined by light and electron microscopy. It was observed that the endocrine cells were located on the basal lamina and among the columnar epithelial cells of the midgut. The cells were morphologically determined as columnar or coniform. The cytoplasm of endocrine cells was observed to contain rough endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, developed Golgi complex, vesicles and numerous small secretory granules. It was also observed that the secretory granules were often located in the basal region of the endocrine cells.

Use Of A Discriminant Function For The Morphometric And Meristic Separation Of Whiting Stocks, Merlangius Merlangus Euxinus, Along The Turkish Black Sea Coast, Ali̇ İşmen

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Stock differentiation studies of whiting, Merlangius merlangus euxinus, from the Turkish Black Sea coast were carried out using morphometric and meristic characters and applying the generalised distance of Mahalanobis. Fifteen morphometric measurements, together with eleven meristic characters, were used in the analyses. Insufficient differences (P>0.01) in general phenotypic and genotypic characteristics implied the existence of a single unit stock. Samples taken in different periods showed lower similarity than those taken in the same periods.
