Morphological Differences Among Two Populations Of The Hooded Pitcher Plant, Sarrancenia Minor, And Its Usefulness As An Indicator Species For Bog And Seepage Savanna Communities, Ryan Meyer, Justin Walguarnery, Dawn Beaulac, Kelly Hughes, Trish Brown
All Volumes (2001-2008)
The ultimate goal of this project is to develop a model of Sarracenia minor morphology under various environmental conditions, which can then be used to assess the overall health of these ecosystems. Because S. minor is sensitive to disturbance it may be a good candidate for use as an indicator species. Decline in habitat quality should be detectable as changes in the population dynamics and morphology of S. minor, thereby indicating that intervention may be necessary to maintain habitat viability. For instance, a population that consists primarily of large mature individuals indicates that the habitat may not be suitable …
Sex Differences In Mechanical Aptitude: An Investigation Of Sex Differences In Mechanical Aptitude And Its Relation To Nonverbal Abilities, Karolina E. Christensson Ringby
Sex Differences In Mechanical Aptitude: An Investigation Of Sex Differences In Mechanical Aptitude And Its Relation To Nonverbal Abilities, Karolina E. Christensson Ringby
All Volumes (2001-2008)
This study investigates sex differences in mechanical abilities. Numerous research findings support the existence of sex differences in mechanical aptitude as well as in other abilities. Recent research suggests that there is a relationship between mechanical aptitude and certain nonverbal reasoning (e.g., visual-spatial) abilities. Due to the possible links between these constructs, sex differences in a nonverbal measure of general intellectual functioning, made up of five subtests, were also evaluated. Thus, the purpose of this study is twofold: to investigate sex differences in mechanical aptitude and nonverbal abilities, and to explore the construct validity of all the measures employed. Females …
Reactivity To Social And Nonsocial Challenges In Anolis Carolinensis, Sheetal Vyas
Reactivity To Social And Nonsocial Challenges In Anolis Carolinensis, Sheetal Vyas
All Volumes (2001-2008)
This study is the first of its kind to observe reactivity style, an individual's consistent response to stress, in a non-mammalian vertebrate species. The responses to social and acute nonsocial stressors were investigated using Anolis carolinensis, a small arboreal lizard native to the Southeastern United States. Patterns of stress responses across various contexts were identified. The social stressor involved introducing one lizard to another, while the nonsocial stressors consisted of a Novelty and Restraint test. The lizards' behaviors, perch site selections, and skin color changes were recorded throughout each test. The results demonstrate that the perch height was the …

Supermarket Use And Exclusive Clauses, Emanuel B. Halper
Supermarket Use And Exclusive Clauses, Emanuel B. Halper
Hofstra Law Review
Although you can find it just about everywhere, the twenty-first century supermarket is hard to define. Consumers have no need to define them They tend to visit these huge and efficient emporia weekly or more often, and they know they can buy what they need there. That's all they need to know. Transactional lawyers who specialize in lease negotiations can't think of the supermarket solely as a place where they can buy food and other things. Defining the supermarket and distinguishing supermarkets from other kinds of stores that do business in shopping centers are essential skills for them. To a …
Analysis Of Allelometric Behaviors And Social Organization In Domestic Sheep, Shole Cody Adams
Analysis Of Allelometric Behaviors And Social Organization In Domestic Sheep, Shole Cody Adams
Open Access Master's Theses
Although sheep are thought to be the first domesticated food animal, and have been around for thousands of years, little is known about their social structure. Knowing some of the behaviors exhibited by sheep has already helped shape modern animal husbandry. Becoming familiar with more of the vast array of social behaviors used by sheep could benefit animal husbandry even further. In the wild, sheep graze on large areas of land where there is little competition for food. However, some domesticated sheep spend very little time on open ranges and are often and are often forced to compete over condensed …
Inhibition Studies Of Protein Phosphatase 2a By Known Cathartic Plant Drugs, Michael Ford
Inhibition Studies Of Protein Phosphatase 2a By Known Cathartic Plant Drugs, Michael Ford
Open Access Master's Theses
Protein phosphatases play significant roles in signal transduction pathways that regulate cellular processes in response to external/internal stimuli. They are crucial for the growth, division, and differentiation of all organisms. Examples of cell functions involving reversible phosphorylation include ion transport, metabolism, cell cycle progression, developmental control, and stress responses. Serine/threoninespecific protein phosphatases are of particular interest in this study. There are two types of serine/threonine-specific protein phosphatases: type 1 & type 2. Both protein phosphatase 1 (PPl) and protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) are inhibited by a structurally diverse group of natural toxins produced by marine organisms that cause diarrhetic shellfish …

Through The Looking Glass Of Teaching: The Death Penalty And The Political Culture Of Detached Passions, Adelaide H. Villmoare
Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest
Today, despite daily struggles in courtrooms against capital punishment, there appears little legal room to challenge the death penalty. Most constitutional questions appear "settled. Given the present composition of the Supreme Court, there is scant expectation of any major reversals. Also, the Court's future is to be decided by a President who was governor of a state that has executed more people since 1976 than any other state in the nation. While abolitionist scholars and activists continue to raise constitutional issues, the most dramatic events challenging the death penalty have occurred in the larger political arena outside the courtroom. The …
Migration And Radicalization: Global Futures, Gabriel Rubin
Migration And Radicalization: Global Futures, Gabriel Rubin
Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This book explores the connections between migration and terrorism and extrapolates, with the help of current research and case studies, what the future may hold for both issues. Migration and Radicalization: Global Futures looks at how migrants and terrorists have both been treated as Others outside the body politic, how growing migrant flows borne of a rickety state system cause both natives and migrants to turn violent, and how terrorist radicalization and tensions between natives and migrants can be reduced. As he contemplates potential global futures in the light of migration and radicalization, Gabriel Rubin charts a course between contemporary …
Non-Target Hazard Assessment Of Using Drc-1339 Avicide To Manage Blackbirds In Sunflower, John D. Eisemann, George M. Linz, John J. Johnston
Non-Target Hazard Assessment Of Using Drc-1339 Avicide To Manage Blackbirds In Sunflower, John D. Eisemann, George M. Linz, John J. Johnston
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Terrestrial hazard assessments were conducted for the spring blackbird baiting program to protect sunflower crops. Risk Assessment methodology proposed by the Ecological Committee on FIFRA Risk Assessment Methods (ECOFRAM) and the method currently used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (LD50s/ft2) were compared for their predictive strengths and for the ease of adapting the assessment to site specific conditions. While the ECOFRAM and LD50s/ft2 methods identified the same groups of organisms as being at risk, the flexibility of the ECOFRAM methodology allowed more latitude in adapting the assessment to unique behaviors of individual …

Ecotoxicological Risks Of Potential Toxicants For Brown Tree Snake Control On Guam, John J. Johnston, Richard E. Mauldin, Peter J. Savarie, Joseph E. Brooks, Thomas M. Primus
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis) is a nocturnal, arboreal, rear-fanged, mildly venomous, colubrid snake which can reach lengths of up to 2.3 m and weigh as much as 2 kg(1). Originally, the species' range included the northern and eastern coasts of Australia, Papua New Guinea and nearby islands (2). It is believed that sometime in the 19501s, that snakes were inadvertently transported from New Guinea to Guam, where they proliferated (3). By the mid-1960’s, marked decreases in Guam's bird life were observed. By the mid-1980’s, snake densities were estimated at 50 to 100/hectare (13,000 to 26,000/sq mile), …
Free Exercise Rights Of Capital Jurors, Brian Galle
Free Exercise Rights Of Capital Jurors, Brian Galle
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The Supreme Court has said that the Constitution permits trial judges to exclude from the pool of potential capital trial jurors any persons whose views on the death penalty would likely substantially impair their ability to reach an impartial verdict. This Note argues that the Court's analysis to date is incomplete, in that it omits close evaluation of potential conflicts between such exclusions and the Free Exercise Clause. The Note argues further that a court should apply strict scrutiny to any state action, such as exclusion for cause, that burdens the use of religious beliefs in the mental processes of …

The department’s progress toward modifying or eliminating (such as by contracting) operations or its use of alternate products to reduce potential environmental liability and associated costs will be examined, 2. To observe and analyze selected operations at a sample of facilities visited during the first study [March 1990 – November 1992] to identify where additional strengthening is needed. Additional facilities recommended by the department will also …
Rights, Capabilities, And The Good Society, Robin West
Rights, Capabilities, And The Good Society, Robin West
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
In Part I this essay explores and then criticizes the two major arguments behind the conventional wisdom that rights undermine efforts to secure a state role in ensuring the material preconditions for a good society, and therefore, the material preconditions for the development of those human capabilities essential to a fully human life. I conclude in this part that this understanding of rights is mistaken. In Part II, I urge that the pragmatic argument put forward by rights critics and some welfare advocates for forgoing rights-talk and rights-rhetoric also fails: there are very real costs, both in theory and in …
Joseph In Lawyerland, Robin West
Joseph In Lawyerland, Robin West
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
As Alice wanders through Wonderland in an unreal space in real time-a dream-learning backward truths from illogical creatures who speak in paradoxes, so Joseph figuratively wanders through lawyerland in an unreal time, but in a very real space-Manhattan-conversing with his thinly fictionalized friends, all of whom happen to be lawyers, about their lives and practices in law. As Joseph's lawyers talk with him about the law they practice, they uncover, through White Rabbit and Cheshire Cat-like illogical precision, a chaotic, unkempt, unconscionably reckless, often cruel, and sometimes pathological legal wilderness. The legal terrain these lawyers occupy is not an inviting …
Privacy, Ideology, And Technology: A Response To Jeffrey Rosen, Julie E. Cohen
Privacy, Ideology, And Technology: A Response To Jeffrey Rosen, Julie E. Cohen
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This essay reviews Jeffrey Rosen’s The Unwanted Gaze: The Destruction of Privacy in America (2000).
Rosen offers a compelling (and often hair-raising) account of the pervasive dissolution of the boundary between public and private information. This dissolution is both legal and social; neither the law nor any other social institution seems to recognize many limits on the sorts of information that can be subjected to public scrutiny. The book also provides a rich, evocative characterization of the dignitary harms caused by privacy invasion. Rosen’s description of the sheer unfairness of being “judged out of context” rings instantly true. Privacy, Rosen …

Disability, Federalism, And A Court With An Eccentric Mission, Michael H. Gottesman
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article examines the Supreme Court's recent Eleventh and Fourteenth Amendment decisions constraining Congress's power to impose legal obligations on state governments. The context for this examination is the Court's consideration this Term of the constitutionality of the provision of the Americans with Disabilities Act authorizing individual suits against states by persons alleging they have been victimized by state disability discrimination. This article was written while the fate of the ADA case was unknown. But the Court issued its decision just as this article was going to press. A postscript has been added describing that decision and its implications. The …

Civil Rights In The New Decade: The Geography Of Opportunity, Sheryll Cashin
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
It is truly an honor and a privilege to have been invited to return to my home state of Alabama to talk about the civil rights agenda in the new decade. Lest you think that I lack the appropriate credentials to speak on this issue, I will tell you that I did go to jail for the cause. At the age of four months, I was taken by my mother, Joan Carpenter Cashin, to a sit-in at a lunch counter in Huntsville, Alabama. When my mother was arrested, she insisted on taking me with her to jail. I am very …

Farming Systems To Manage Salinity. Farmer Directed Research, Development And Extension. Research Results 2001, Richard Olive
Farming Systems To Manage Salinity. Farmer Directed Research, Development And Extension. Research Results 2001, Richard Olive
Natural resources published reports
More and more of Western Australia's agnicultural lands are becoming saline. Currently it is estimated that about 18 milliion ha of land are affected to a greater or lesser degree by salinity causing production losses estimated at about $70 million a year.
Unless ways are found to halt and reverse the salinisation of land it is estimated that another 4.4 million ha could become saline over the next 50 years.
Grain growers and the Federal Government, through the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC). are investing $12 4 million in R&D across Australia to develop productive solutions to the salinity …

Bulletin 4475 - Exotic Diseases - Poultry, Agriculture Western Australia
Bulletins 4000 -
An exotic disease is a disease that is not present in Australia.
If an exotic disease did occur in Australia it would cause production losses, stock deaths and stop exports of primary production. When export markets are lost they can only be re-established once it is proven the disease is eradicated.
