Effects Of Host Quality On Female Locomotor Activity In The Parasitic Wasp Nasonia Vitripennis (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), Jilma H. Ellison Jan 2001

Effects Of Host Quality On Female Locomotor Activity In The Parasitic Wasp Nasonia Vitripennis (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), Jilma H. Ellison

Honors Capstones

Upon encountering a poor quality host, a female parasitoid may need to disperse in order to find a host suitable for oviposition. The effect of host quality on locomotor activity was examined for females of the parasitoid wasp Nasonia vitripennis (Walker) using a natural host, Calliphora vomitoria. In the first experiment, females were exposed to either poor hosts (freeze-killed and stored at room temperature) or good hosts (fresh) hosts for three hours. Then, their activity was recorded for ten minutes. Females given poor quality hosts were more active than those exposed to good quality hosts. In the second experiment, females …

Dispositions For Lexicographic Preferences Of Evironmental Goods: Integrating Economics, Psychology, And Ethics, Randall S. Rosenberger, George L. Peterson, Andrea Clarke, Thomas C. Brown

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This paper combines the psychometric methods of paired comparisons and environmental disposition measurement to explain seemingly lexicographic behavior in choice experiments. A paired comparison experiment is developed that measures economic values using a choice set composed of public goods, private goods, and sums of money. The method provides a detailed map of each respondent’s stated preferences, among the choice set elements. Two treatments are used that differ only on the range of the dollar magnitudes – Treatment A ranges from$10 to $700. Treatment B ranges from $10 to $9,000. In either treatment, a proportion of the respondents potentially exhibit lexicographic …

Arkansas Field Botany (Flora And Vegetation) Bibliography (1988-2000), James H. Peck, C. Theo Witsell, Thomas L. Foti

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The floristic richness and diversity of vegetation in Arkansas continues to require and stimulate a growing body of taxonomic and ecological research publications. Peck and Peck (1988) listed 766 references, including those of the two prior lists. Since then we have gathered 417 additional references. The total list now contains 1,183 references, with 70% prepared or published since 1970. This update is provided for four reasons: 1) to compile a comprehensive source to direct and facilitate future studies, 2) to provide easier access to many reports not normally located in electronic databases, 3) to improve communications with botanists outside Arkansas, …

Overview Of Digital Library Components And Developments, Edward A. Fox

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Digital libraries are being built upon a firm foundation of prior work as the high-end information systems of the future. A component approach is becoming popular, with well-established support for key components like the repository, especially through the Open Archives Initiative. Thus, we separately consider digital objects, metadata, harvesting, indexing, searching, browsing, rights management, linking, and powerful interfaces. Flexible integration will be possible through a variety of architectures, using buses, agents, and other technologies. The field as a whole is undergoing rapid growth, supported by advances in storage, processing, networking, algorithms, and interaction. There are many initiatives and developments, including …

Modelling The Hydrodynamics Of The Patos Lagoon, Brazil, Elisa Helena Fernandes Jan 2001

Modelling The Hydrodynamics Of The Patos Lagoon, Brazil, Elisa Helena Fernandes

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The Patos Lagoon, the largest choked coastal lagoon in the world, is a typical centre of population, commerce, industry and recreation, and consequently it is also a site for disposal of industrial, agricultural and municipal wastes. Important questions concerning beneficial uses of and potential changes to the lagoon and its estuary are left unanswered without a good understanding of hydrodynamic processes. The current study involves the choice, calibration and application of a numerical model which can be used in future hydrodynamic. sediment transport and water quality studies in the area. The two- and three-dimensional modes of the TELEMAC System were …

Local And Systemic Controls On Fish And Fish Habitat In South Dakota Rivers And Streams: Implications For Management, Craig L. Milewski Jan 2001

Local And Systemic Controls On Fish And Fish Habitat In South Dakota Rivers And Streams: Implications For Management, Craig L. Milewski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Assessments of the health of rivers and streams in prairie environments would improve if the role of systemic patterns and processes among geologic-climatic settings in controlling physical habitat and fish communities were better defined. My research approach was based on a premise that assessments of the health of rivers and streams in prairie environments would benefit from studies that 1) examine the moderating effects of systemic patterns and processes by comparing physical habitat continua and fish communities among geologic-climatic settings, 2) determine the relative influence of locally interacting variables (e .g., channel shape and riparian vegetation) and systemic processes in …

The Theatrical Representation Of Incest In Marina Carr's On Raftery's Hill, Eamonn Jordan Jan 2001

The Theatrical Representation Of Incest In Marina Carr's On Raftery's Hill, Eamonn Jordan

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Marina Carr's writing in On Raftery's Hill (2000) is the most recent, most relentlessly focused and complex of responses from an Irish dramatist to the issue of incestuous sexual violation. In her play she creates a world astray, full of obsession, havoc, mutilation and disgust. Eighteen-year old Sorrel Raftery is a young woman, living with her sister (Dinah), grandmother (Shalome), brother (Ded) and her father (Red). Sorrel is engaged to Dara Mood and just prior to her wedding her father rapes her. As the drama progresses it is discovered that Dinah is not Sorrel 's sister, but her mother. Father …

The Status And Distribution Of The Topeka Shiner Notropis Topeka In Eastern South Dakota, Carmen M. Blausey Jan 2001

The Status And Distribution Of The Topeka Shiner Notropis Topeka In Eastern South Dakota, Carmen M. Blausey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Topeka shiner Notropis topeka is a small (< 75 mm) minnow that inhabits prairie streams in several north central plains states. Once widespread and abundant throughout its historic range, the Topeka shiner is now found only in isolated populations. Because of an 80% reduction in occurrence throughout their range, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed the Topeka shiner as endangered in January 1999. At the time, limited information on habitat preferences and dist1ibution existed for this species in South Dakota. The objectives of this study were to measure local habitat features and water quality conditions at the reach scale at Topeka shiner study sites, create a model using these data to determine favorable habitat conditions, and identify fish species commonly associated with Topeka shiners. Fish and habitat data were collected at 61 tributary sites of the James, Vermillion, and Big Sioux rivers from June through September in 1999 and 2000. Sample sites in 1999 were based on historic Topeka shiner records in the South Dakota Natural Heritage Database. Sample sites in 2000 were based on a draft GIS model identifying potential Topeka shiner streams. Fish were collected with seines between block nets and standard procedures were used to measure physical and hydrological features of stream reaches. Cyprinids dominated the fish community for each river basin during both sample years. Insectivores and omnivores were the dominant trophic classes for each river basin for both sample years. Fish community associations for Topeka shiners were based on two stepwise logistic regression models: abundance of individual species at each site and presence or absence of individual species at each site. The abundance model indicated that Topeka shiners were most commonly associated with orangespotted sunfish Lepomis lutrenis and tadpole madtoms Noturns gyrinus. The presence/absence model showed that Topeka shiners were typically associated with red shiners Notropis lutrenis, tadpole madtoms Noturns gyrinus, black bullheads Ameiurus melas, and bigmouth shiners Notropis dorsalis. Habitat preferences were based on three stepwise logistic regression models: physical habitat water quality, and substrate composition at the reach scale. The physical habitat model indicated that Topeka shiners are associated with stream reaches that had low animal use, overhanging vegetation, stream bank vegetation comprised of sedges/rushes, low depositional zones, and run macrohabitat. The water quality model did not indicate any favorable or preferred conditions. The substrate model indicated that Topeka shiners are associated with stream reaches that had fine gravel or cobble substrates. The results of my study will lead to a better understanding of Topeka shiner distribution and habitat, and aid federal and state agencies in making management decisions that provide for protection and preservation of this species.

Now is an opportune time to look at the expanse of research that has emerged since 1980 in the field of African film criticism, to trace its parameters, highlight its strengths and identify its current shifts. In examining its present trends, we shall underscore themes and promising features in current African films. Our focus ·will be on French West African films and filmmakers; we will emphasize theoretical and esthetic writings in the field rather than popular media resources. It is a modest contribution to the field of African film studies, one we hope will foster further research into the full …
