A Mathematical Tumor Model With Immune Resistance And Drug Therapy: An Optimal Control Approach, Lisette G. De Pillis, Ami E. Radunskaya Jan 2001

A Mathematical Tumor Model With Immune Resistance And Drug Therapy: An Optimal Control Approach, Lisette G. De Pillis, Ami E. Radunskaya

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We present a competition model of cancer tumor growth that includes both the immune system response and drug therapy. This is a four-population model that includes tumor cells, host cells, immune cells, and drug interaction. We analyze the stability of the drug-free equilibria with respect to the immune response in order to look for target basins of attraction. One of our goals was to simulate qualitatively the asynchronous tumor-drug interaction known as “Jeffs phenomenon.” The model we develop is successful in generating this asynchronous response behavior. Our other goal was to identify treatment protocols that could improve standard pulsed chemotherapy …

Webquests As An Integrative Experience In Introductory Environmental Engineering, Mary P. Cardenas Jan 2001

Webquests As An Integrative Experience In Introductory Environmental Engineering, Mary P. Cardenas

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

An Integrative Experience was developed as part of an introductory environmental engineering course at Harvey Mudd College. The Integrative Experience was developed to help the college students consider the relationship of science and technology with contemporary society. Junior and senior students enrolled in the course designed WebQuests for middle school students. The WebQuests involved the integration of an environmental issue, problem, or technology and societal effects. WebQuests were designed for a middle school audience in order to expand the amount of engineering outreach that is done at the K-12 level. The HMC students chose WebQuests topics including nuclear and alternative …

The Arithmetic Of Arsenic, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2001

The Arithmetic Of Arsenic, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

What does cost-benefit analysis mean, or do, in actual practice? When agencies engage in cost-benefit balancing, what are the interactions among law, science, and economics? This Article attempts to answer that question by exploring, in some detail, the controversy over the EPA's proposed regulation of arsenic in drinking water The largest finding is that often science can produce only "benefit ranges, " and wide ones at that. With reasonable assumptions based on the scientific data before the EPA at the time it made its initial decision, the proposed arsenic regulation can be projected to save as few as 0 lives …

The Limits Of Gaylaw, Dale Carpenter Jan 2001

The Limits Of Gaylaw, Dale Carpenter

Articles

The world into which Gaylaw arrives is one whose poles are very far apart. At one pole, a man fatally fractures his dog's skull by beating him with a plastic vacuum cleaner accessory and then throwing the dog against a tree trunk. 3 Why? The man concluded the dog was homosexual after he saw the poodle-Yorkshire terrier mix repeatedly attempt sexual activity with another male terrier. 4 At the man's subsequent trial for animal cruelty, a veterinarian testified that such behavior in dogs is a common way for them to assert dominance, rather than necessarily a sexual act, much less …

Textiles : Function And Symbolism Within The Social And Ritual Systems Of Sumba, Eastern Indonesia, Jennifer A. Quincey Jan 2001

Textiles : Function And Symbolism Within The Social And Ritual Systems Of Sumba, Eastern Indonesia, Jennifer A. Quincey

Honors Capstones

This thesis focuses on the place of textiles within the traditional social and ritual systems of Sumba, Eastern Indonesia; also considered is the cosmological significance of motifs depicted in these cloths as they relate to Sumbanese rituals. Textiles are cultural condensations in woven form. As such, they provide a window into the cosmologies of the people producing them. This research examines the social uses of Sumbanese textiles and also attempts to uncover dominant ritual symbols depicted therein through utilizing Turner’s analytical framework of symbolic analysis (1967:19-47). The rituals examined for this purpose are confined to marriage and funeral ceremonies. Aspects …

Effect Of Low Pulsed Microwaves On Heart Rate Variability Signals In Mammals, Ahmed Kamal Jan 2001

Effect Of Low Pulsed Microwaves On Heart Rate Variability Signals In Mammals, Ahmed Kamal

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this work is to study the effect of low pulsed microwaves on the heart rate variability signals derived from electrocardiogram signals of ten cats irradiated with pulsed microwaves with 5.655GHz. METHODS: Electrocardiograms of ten anaesthetized cats were measured and recorded using implanted electrodes before microwave exposure. Rectangular pulses at 5.655GHz, 2 w peak, 5.5us wide and repetition rate 2 Hz were applied to the brain of cats through horns and wave guides for 20 minutes, followed by a 20 minute recovery period after exposure. RESULTS: The results clearly indicate that the pulsed microwaves radiation induced …

The Garment Industry's Best Kept Secret : Contuined Global Expansions Of Sweatshops, Wyndy Neidholt Jan 2001

The Garment Industry's Best Kept Secret : Contuined Global Expansions Of Sweatshops, Wyndy Neidholt

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Finding out the truth can hurt to the depths of one's soul. Proud American citizens have recently learned the truth of the re-emergence of sweatshops from New York to California. It can be difficult to grasp the idea that everyday in the United States people are working for far less than minimum wage in deplorable conditions. After all, American politicians frequently give advice to Third World countries on how to set up labor laws and establish safe working conditions. There are several reasons for the re-emergence of sweatshops globally. The competition for work has caused wages to decrease at a …

Visualization Of Transit Mobility And Performance, Anibal A. Galindez, Ricardo Mireles-Córdova Jan 2001

Visualization Of Transit Mobility And Performance, Anibal A. Galindez, Ricardo Mireles-Córdova

Journal of Public Transportation

The visualization of a transit mobility model is presented in this article. The method described shows transit system capacity and utilization by area and time of day using ride-check data as a proxy for real-time information. It indicates how public transportation resources can be used in a more efficient and effective manner. The visualization process requires the creation of a time/location data matrix of the variable to be analyzed and the linking of the performance measure to spatial data. This creates a temporal Geographic Information System (GIS) platform for the entire transit system or systems at the regional level. The …
