Avian Use Of Various Bait Mixtures Offered In Harvested Cornfields During Spring Migration In South Dakota, George M. Linz, H. Jeffrey Homan, Ryan L. Wimberly

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The avicide, DRC-1339, is used to cull populations of spring-migrating blackbirds in eastern South Dakota to reduce damage to ripening sunflower in late summer. We investigated non-target bird hazards associated with using various grain mixtures to attract blackbirds (Icteridae), especially red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus), to avicide-treated bait broadcast in harvested cornfields. During spring 1997 and 1998, we recorded the species and numbers of birds attracted to 0.2-ha plots baited with cracked corn and brown rice, fine-chipped sunflower meats and brown rice (1997 only), and unsupplemented brown rice. Unbaited plots were used as reference sites. In 1997 and 1998, …

Pathology Of Brucellosis In Bison From Yellowstone National Park, Jack C. Rhyan, Thomas Gidlewski, Thomas J. Roffe, Keith Aune, L. Michael Philo, Darla R. Ewalt

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Between February 1995 and June 1999, specimens from seven aborted bison (Bison bison) fetuses or stillborn calves and their placentas, two additional placentas, three dead neonates, one 2-wk-old calf, and 35 juvenile and adult female bison from Yellowstone National Park (USA) were submitted for bacteriologic and histopathologic examination. One adult animal with a retained placenta had recently aborted. Serum samples from the 35 juvenile and adult bison were tested for Brucella spp. antibodies. Twenty-six bison, including the cow with the retained placenta, were seropositive, one was suspect, and eight were seronegative. Brucella abortus biovar 1 was isolated from …

Factors Associated With Occurrence And Density Of Wetland Birds In The Prairie Pothole Region Of Iowa, Steve E. Fairbairn, James J. Dinsmore Jan 2001

Factors Associated With Occurrence And Density Of Wetland Birds In The Prairie Pothole Region Of Iowa, Steve E. Fairbairn, James J. Dinsmore

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Wetlands within wetland complexes in northwestern, north-central, and central Iowa were surveyed for bird use in 1997 and 1998. Species occurrence, species richness, and density of nesting species were related to wetland habitat variables. A habitat diversity index measuring the evenness of distribution of the different habitats within a wetland was the best predictor of species richness in both years. The habitat diversity index was also the best predictor of the occurrence of individual species in both 1997 and 1998. Eight of 11 species (7 3%) in 1997 and 13 of 18 species (72%) in 1998 had greater densities in …

Faith, History, And The Conference On Faith And History, William Vance Trollinger Jan 2001

Faith, History, And The Conference On Faith And History, William Vance Trollinger

History Faculty Publications

The author notes of this paper, given as a keynote address:

  • The talk that I give tonight is not the talk that I was originally planning to deliver at this conference. When I was asked to give the keynote address, I assumed that I would simply present an elongated version of the paper that I was going to give in this morning's session on "Peace, Justice, and Evangelicals"; my paper was to be on the strengths and weaknesses and omissions in the recent literature written by evangelicals on the notion of a Christian approach to history. But the more I …

The Case For Microbicides: A Global Priority, Kathy Attawell Jan 2001

The Case For Microbicides: A Global Priority, Kathy Attawell

HIV and AIDS

The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to spread, undermining development, reversing health gains, and exacerbating poverty. It will be some time before a vaccine is available and accessible, thus there is an urgent need to identify additional prevention options, in particular a method that women control, which could save millions of lives. This report from the Population Council and International Family Health presents the case for microbicides—products used vaginally to prevent infection from HIV and other STIs in women and their sexual partners—and discusses recent progress and developments, outstanding challenges, and the action required to ensure that products will be made available …

Effects Of Hydroperiod On Metamorphosis In Rana Sphenocephala, Travis J. Ryan, Christopher T. Winne Jan 2001

Effects Of Hydroperiod On Metamorphosis In Rana Sphenocephala, Travis J. Ryan, Christopher T. Winne

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Hydroperiod, the time a temporary pond holds water, is an important factor influencing recruitment in amphibian populations and structuring amphibian communities. We conducted an experiment to test the effect of hydroperiod on metamorphic traits of the southern leopard frog (Rana sphenocephala), a common amphibian in the southeastern United States. We reared larval R. sphenocephala in artificial ponds at a density of 32 larvae per tank (initial volume = approximately 650 liter). We dried the tanks according to natural patterns, using three different hydroperiods (60, 75 and 90 d). Experimental hydroperiods had a significant effect on the number of …

Contextual Unanimity And The Units Of Selection Problem, Stuart M. Glennan Jan 2001

Contextual Unanimity And The Units Of Selection Problem, Stuart M. Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Sober and Lewontin’s critique of genic selectionism is based upon the principle that a unit of selection should make a context‐independent contribution to fitness. Critics have effectively shown that this principle is flawed. In this paper I show that the context independence principle is an instance of a more general principle for characterizing causes, called the contextual unanimity principle. I argue that this latter principle, while widely accepted, is erroneous. What is needed is to replace the approach to causality characterized by the contextual unanimity criterion with an approach based on the concept of causal mechanism. After sketching such an approach, …

Habitat Ecology Of The Native Subtidal Snail, Lacuna Vincta, In The Gulf Of Maine And The Impact Of Two Introduced Species, Suchana Chavanich Jan 2001

Habitat Ecology Of The Native Subtidal Snail, Lacuna Vincta, In The Gulf Of Maine And The Impact Of Two Introduced Species, Suchana Chavanich

Doctoral Dissertations

Lacuna vincta (Montagu) is a small native herbivorous gastropod that feeds and lives on algae within the rocky subtidal zone of New England. In this study, a combination of field samplings and laboratory experiments were conducted in order to examine the seasonal abundance, feeding preference, and growth of snails on nine different algal species. The results showed that there were differences in the seasonal abundance patterns of L. vincta populations on different algal species. However, the snail populations in all size classes were found year round on Laminaria saccharina (L.) Lamour. Feeding preference experiments showed that L. vincta preferred Antithamnionella …

Parenting And Child Competence: A Longitudinal Investigation Of The Moderating Influences Of Ethnicity, Family Socioeconomic Status, And Neighborhood Quality, Eric Curtis Dearing Jan 2001

Parenting And Child Competence: A Longitudinal Investigation Of The Moderating Influences Of Ethnicity, Family Socioeconomic Status, And Neighborhood Quality, Eric Curtis Dearing

Doctoral Dissertations

Although there is considerable evidence that parenting influences the behavioral, cognitive, emotional, and social development of children, the effects of some parenting behaviors may not be universal. In the present study, child ethnicity, family socioeconomic status, neighborhood quality (i.e., crime and median income), and cumulative risk (i.e., composite of family socioeconomic status and neighborhood quality) were modeled as potential moderators of associations between parenting (i.e., maternal sensitivity and traditional values) and four child outcomes (i.e., behavior problems, depression, loneliness, and school performance). Pathways of mediation for these parenting measures were also explored. In addition, age trends in neighborhood effects were …

Discrete Modeling Of Sculptured Surface Machining For Robust Automatic Feedrate Selection, Jeffrey Gordon Hemmett Jan 2001

Discrete Modeling Of Sculptured Surface Machining For Robust Automatic Feedrate Selection, Jeffrey Gordon Hemmett

Doctoral Dissertations

Traditional feedrate selection techniques currently used in three and five-axis CNC machining reduces milling efficiency. Manually estimated feedrates tend to be conservative and constant, greatly increasing mill time. The goal of this research is to develop robust techniques and software tools for automatically generating optimized feedrates for use on three and five-axis CNC mills, to both simplify the feed selection process and to increase the safety and efficiency of the milling operation through milling process simulation.

The simulation software estimates milling force vectors for each tool move, and identifies a feedrate that maintains a desired peak force. The desired cutting …

Detection Of Giardia Lamblia And Cryptosporidium Parvum In The Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Harvested From The Great Bay Estuary, Kim Marie Stowell Jan 2001

Detection Of Giardia Lamblia And Cryptosporidium Parvum In The Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Harvested From The Great Bay Estuary, Kim Marie Stowell

Doctoral Dissertations

The Great Bay Estuarine system is being impacted by point source and nonpoint source pollution that affect shellfish quality. Many outbreaks of human gastroenteritis are potentially caused by the consumption of raw or undercooked oysters in which the protozoan pathogens, Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium parvum are present. The development of a rapid and sensitive technique to detect infectious protozoa in oysters is a necessity.

Immunofluorescence has been employed as a technique for the detection of these organisms in drinking water. Cross reactivity with algae and the production of false positive results limits the usefulness of this technique in environmental studies. …

The Relationship Between Fruit Color Traits And Anthocyanin Genes In Diploid Fragaria, Chaoyang Deng Jan 2001

The Relationship Between Fruit Color Traits And Anthocyanin Genes In Diploid Fragaria, Chaoyang Deng

Doctoral Dissertations

A candidate gene approach was used to determine the likely molecular identity of the c locus (yellow fruit color) in Fragaria vesca, a diploid (2n = 2x = 14) strawberry. Using PCR with degenerate primer pairs, intron-containing segments of structural genes coding for the enzymes: chalcone synthase (CHS), chalcone isomerase (CHI), flavanone 3-hydroxylase (F3H), dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (DFR), anthocyanindin synthase (ANS), and one Del-like regulatory gene (RAN) in the anthocyanin biosynthetic pathway were amplified, cloned and sequenced. Intron length polymorphisms for each of these genes were detected among three diploid varieties: F. vesca Alpine variety 'Yellow Wonder' (YW) (Europe); DNIC, an …

Regulation Of Mammalian Photoreceptor Phosphodiesterase (Pde) By Its Noncatalytic Gaf Domains And Its Two Small Subunits, Gamma And Delta, Hongmei Mou Jan 2001

Regulation Of Mammalian Photoreceptor Phosphodiesterase (Pde) By Its Noncatalytic Gaf Domains And Its Two Small Subunits, Gamma And Delta, Hongmei Mou

Doctoral Dissertations

cGMP phosphodiesterase (PDE) is the central effector of visual transduction in retinal rod photoreceptors. The overall goal of this work was to investigate the possible regulatory mechanisms of PDE in mammalian rod photoreceptors by its noncatalytic cGMP binding sites on the PDE catalytic dimer (Palphabeta), and by the interactions between the inhibitory Pgamma subunit and Palphabeta in their phosphorylated and non-phosphorylated states.

First, the binding of cGMP to the noncatalytic sites on membrane-associated PDE (PDE-M) and soluble PDE (PDE-S) was characterized. We found that PDE-M holoenzyme contains 2 non-identical high-affinity cGMP binding sites; one of the cGMP binding sites is …

The International Recognition Of Judgments: The Debate Between Private And Public Law Solutions, Antonio F. Perez Jan 2001

The International Recognition Of Judgments: The Debate Between Private And Public Law Solutions, Antonio F. Perez

Scholarly Articles

This article explores institutional alternatives for balancing the competing trade and non-trade concerns at the national and global levels in relation to the recognition and enforcement of judgments. It argues against a private international law convention of the kind that is currently being negotiated at the Hague Conference on Private International Law, and against quasi-constitutional and constitutional solutions, such as those employed by the European Union and the United States. Rather, the article argues that managing the tensions between trade and non-trade values and between state autonomy and globally established standards can best be achieved through a supplementary agreement in …

Setting Limits: Medical Technology And The Law, George P. Smith Ii Jan 2001

Setting Limits: Medical Technology And The Law, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

The allocation and rationing of health care resources is, no doubt, one of the most pressing issues confronting contemporary society. These issues considered from a micro and a macro level of economic analysis are linked inextricably to utilitarianism which, in turn, relies upon a cost-benefit analysis which balances reasonable individual needs against the availability of medical resources within the larger community. From an ethical viewpoint, the cost-benefit approach to the distribution of health care resources is impractical because it seeks to reduce (or convert) all health benefits to dollar amounts, thereby seeking very awkwardly to convert quality of life benefits …

What Is Family Preservation And Why Does It Matter?, J. Mccroskey Jan 2001

What Is Family Preservation And Why Does It Matter?, J. Mccroskey

Journal of Family Strengths

This paper describes competing ideas about family preservation, defined both as a defined program of social services and a philosophical approach to helping troubled families. A straightforward definition has become almost impossible because the phrase has taken on so many different meanings, provoking controversy about its "real" meaning and value. Indeed, "family preservation" has become the proverbial elephant whose splendors and horrors are described with great certainty by those impressed by only one of its aspects. While skirmishes between "child savers" and "family preservers" have been part of the child welfare field since its beginning at the turn of the …

A Step At A Time: New Zealand's Progress Toward Homonid Rights, Rowan Taylor Jan 2001

A Step At A Time: New Zealand's Progress Toward Homonid Rights, Rowan Taylor

Animal Law Review

All members of the Homindae Family (humans, chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans) share complex cognitive aptitudes not shared by most other animals. Yet only human hominids have legal rights to life and personal security. The campaign to win fundamental rights for all hominids took a small but significant step forward in 1999 when New Zealand's Animal Welfare Act banned the use of non-human hominids in research, testing, and teaching except where such uses are in the hominids' best interests. In preventing human interests from trumping non-human ones, the Act took a first step toward dismantling speciesism within the hominid family. …
