Intractability And Undecidability In Small Sets Of Wang Tiles, Adam Delisse Jan 2001

Intractability And Undecidability In Small Sets Of Wang Tiles, Adam Delisse

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Imagine a never-ending checkerboard, red and black squares alternating forever in every direction. Now close your eyes, wait for a second, and open them again. There is still the checkerboard, but is it different? Has somebody moved the checkerboard over two squares? Four squares? One million squares? It still looks the same. This is the nature of periodic tilings. Wang tiles are squares, much like the red and black ones used on a checkerboard, except Wang tiles have colors on their edges instead of on the whole square. Also, Wang tiles can only be put edge-to-edge with each other where …

Thermal And Reproductive Biology Of The Lizards Sceloporus Occidentalis And Sceloporus Graciosus Along An Environmental And Geographical Gradient, Scott Landsborough Parker

Theses Digitization Project

The thermal environment exerts a strong influence on many aspectsof squamate life history. Environmental temperatures constrain daily activity time, fecundity, growth rate, and also influences hatchling phenotype. Cold nest temperatures can slow the development of eggs deposited in the soil, cause developmental abnormalities or result in mortality of embryos.

An Environmental Education Field Guide For Mystic Lake Wetland Habitats, Linda Jean Ellingston Jan 2001

An Environmental Education Field Guide For Mystic Lake Wetland Habitats, Linda Jean Ellingston

The San Jacinto Valley wetland area is used as an example of wetland habitat destruction from population pressures that have changed the natural landscape. It is also used as an example of what habitat reconstruction can do to restore vital habitats. Through student contact with the wetlands increased awareness of the fragile interrelationships between the physical and biological components of a wetland habitat is gained. Students can use ecological themes to help them assimilate collected and given data …

Effects Of Chronic Cd Exposure Via The Diet Or Water On Internal Organ-Specific Distribution And Subsequent Gill Cd Uptake Kinetics In Juvenile Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Cheryl Szebedinksy, James C. Mcgeer, D. Gordon Mcdonald, Chris M. Wood Jan 2001

Effects Of Chronic Cd Exposure Via The Diet Or Water On Internal Organ-Specific Distribution And Subsequent Gill Cd Uptake Kinetics In Juvenile Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Cheryl Szebedinksy, James C. Mcgeer, D. Gordon Mcdonald, Chris M. Wood

Biology Faculty Publications

New regulatory approaches to metal toxicity (e.g., biotic ligand model [BLM]) focus on gill metal binding and tissue specific accumulation of waterborne metals; the dietary route of exposure and dietary/waterborne interactions are not considered, nor are the consequences of chronic exposure by either route. Therefore, we studied the effect of the same gill Cd load (∼μ2.5 mg/g), achieved by a chronic, 30-d exposure to Cd either via the diet (1,500 mg/kg) or the water (2 μg/L), on tissue-specific Cd distribution and subsequent uptake of waterborne Cd in juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). These two exposure regimes resulted in …

Rapid Metabolic Recovery Following Vigorous Exercise In Burrow-Dwelling Larval Sea Lampreys (Petromyzon Marinus), Michael P. Wilkie, Philip G. Bradshaw, Vincent Joanis, Jaime F. Claude, Shannon L. Swindell Jan 2001

Rapid Metabolic Recovery Following Vigorous Exercise In Burrow-Dwelling Larval Sea Lampreys (Petromyzon Marinus), Michael P. Wilkie, Philip G. Bradshaw, Vincent Joanis, Jaime F. Claude, Shannon L. Swindell

Biology Faculty Publications

Although the majority of the sea lamprey’s (Petromyzon marinus) life cycle is spent as a burrow-dwelling larva, or ammocoete, surprisingly little is known about intermediary metabolism in this stage of the lamprey’s life history. In this study, larval sea lampreys (ammocoetes) were vigorously exercised for 5 min, and their patterns of metabolic fuel depletion and replenishment and oxygen consumption, along with measurements of net whole-body acid and ion movements, were followed during a 4–24-h postexercise recovery period. Exercise led to initial five- to sixfold increases in postexercise oxygen consumption, which remained significantly elevated by 1.5–2.0 times for the …

Negotiating Academic And Personal Selves (Chapter 4 Of The Book Between Gay And Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation), Lisa M. Tillmann Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

“Negotiating Academic and Personal Selves” is Chapter 4 of the book Between Gay and Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation (AltaMira Press, 2001). Here I show how my relationships with the gay men of my research community alter how I position myself in graduate courses, how I practice research, how I write, and how I teach my classes. As a student, I delve into new projects on sexual orientation and identity; as an instructor, I alter course reading lists, assignments, and activities. This chapter also moves through my increasingly problematic encounters with associates who identify as heterosexual. My new consciousness …

The Invisible Can Or, Gendering Corporate Globalization Trouble: Technological Utopianism And The Language Of Erasure, Marleen S. Barr Jan 2001

The Invisible Can Or, Gendering Corporate Globalization Trouble: Technological Utopianism And The Language Of Erasure, Marleen S. Barr

Publications and Research

In the following, noted science fiction scholar Marleen S. Barr argues for an increased attention to science fiction as a literature of the potentials of globalization, a genre that has largely been marginalized in discussions of the future of a globalized techno-culture. Further, Barr argues for greater attention being paid to feminist utopian fiction which helps to reimagine women's roles in the increasingly complex, and increasingly capitalistic, globalized techno-culture that has continued to marginalize the female body (and consciousness) in much the same way that scholars have denied the possibilities of utopian science fiction.

Internal Audit At The Historical Hudson's Bay Company: A Challenge To Accepted History, Gary P. Spraakman Jan 2001

Internal Audit At The Historical Hudson's Bay Company: A Challenge To Accepted History, Gary P. Spraakman

Accounting Historians Journal

The accepted history of managerial internal audit is that its origins are in financial and compliance auditing. Managerial was added after firms started to expand geographically or into other businesses. That expansion increased complexity and created problems for managers which the internal auditor assisted in solving with managerial audits. Contrary to that two stage development, something comparable to managerial internal audit was being practiced by the Hudson's Bay Company in the form of inspections as early as 1871. Rather than in financial and compliance auditing, these inspections had their geneses in the desire of the senior manager and the committee …
