Social Norms And The Time Allocation Of Women's Labor In Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Bruce Wydick Jan 2001

Social Norms And The Time Allocation Of Women's Labor In Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Bruce Wydick

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper proposes that major determinants of allocation of women's time are social norms that regulate the economic activities of women. Our emphasis on norms contrasts with approaches that view time allocation as determined by household-level economic variables. Using data from Burkina Faso, we show that social norms significantly explain differences in patterns of time allocation between two ethnic groups: Mossi and Bwa. Econometric results show women from the two groups exhibiting different responses to changes in farm capital. Implications are that policies that foster changes in social norms may have more permanent effects on altering women's behavior.

International Tax Competition: An Efficient Or Inefficient Phenomenon?, Mitchell B. Weiss

Akron Tax Journal

This Article examines the legal and economic implications of this globalization phenomenon. Part I discusses the allocative effect an income tax system has on a particular country's resources. This first part, while focusing only on domestic tax policy, is intended to throw some light on the international issues that are the central focus of this article. So with this background in mind, Part II turns to the international scene, analyzing the efficiency effect international integration is having on the world's income tax systems in general and the U.S.'s income tax system in particular. Nurturing Thenext Generation Of Wisconsin’S Dairy Farmers, B. Barham, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, S. Stevenson, J. Taylor Jan 2001

Nurturing Thenext Generation Of Wisconsin’S Dairy Farmers, B. Barham, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, S. Stevenson, J. Taylor

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

A strong dairy economy has both economic and social benefits for Wisconsin. While support for beginning dairy farmers is not the only way to sustain and increase dairy productivity, it is an important strategy that can renew the dairy industry with new farmers. There are many challenges in attracting new people to the dairy business. New dairy farmers often face high start-up costs for land, equipment, and facilities. Volatile milk prices, long hours, and hard work reduce the appeal of a career in dairy farming. In the 1990s, prospective dairy farmers could readily find off-farm jobs that often paid better …

Traceability In Red Meat: Market Opportunity Or Threat?, Sterling Liddell, Deevon Bailey Jan 2001

Traceability In Red Meat: Market Opportunity Or Threat?, Sterling Liddell, Deevon Bailey

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Traceability poses market opportunities and threats for U.S. red meat producers for at least two reasons. First, consumers are becoming more concerned about the inputs and practices used to produce food and the ability to trace red meat to its source is an essential step in providing information to consumers about inputs and practices. Second, our principal competitors and customers in international red meat trade have been developing traceability systems. If our competitors are successful in differentiating their red meat products based on traceability, it could have a potentially devastating effect on U.S. red meat trade. This paper discusses these …

A Comparison Of Methods To Evaluate Energy Expenditure Of Incubating Wandering Albatrosses, Scott A. Shaffer, D P. Costa, H Weimerskirch

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Measurements of incubation energetics can vary depending on the method used to measure metabolism of an incubating bird. Therefore, we evaluated the energy expenditure of six male and four female wandering albatrosses (Diomedea exulans Linnaeus) using doubly labeled water (DLW), the rate of mass loss, and estimates of metabolic water production derived from water influx rate (WIR). Incubation metabolic rates (IMR) determined with DLW ( 169 ± 21 kJ kg d SD) were significantly lower than estimates derived from mass loss ( 277 ± 46kJ kg d SD) and WIR ( males=289 ± 60 kJ kg d vs. females = …

The Effects Of R-Flurbiprofen In Reducing Tumors In A Multiple Intestinal Neoplasia Mouse Model, David Douglas Quiggle Jan 2001

The Effects Of R-Flurbiprofen In Reducing Tumors In A Multiple Intestinal Neoplasia Mouse Model, David Douglas Quiggle

Theses Digitization Project

The design of the proposed study was to administer R-FB to 72-day old Min/+ mice for up to 42 days. In order to capture the process of tumor reduction, animals were necropsied at various time points. At each time point animals were evaluated for tumor loads and presence of apoptotic cells along the small intestine. Studies have shown that when R-flurbiprofen (R-FB) is administered in the Min/+ mouse model it can cause the prevention and regression on intestinal tumors.
