Role Of Ca2+ In Excitation-Contraction Coupling In Echinoderm Muscle: Comparison With Role In Other Tissues, Robert B. Hill Jan 2001

Role Of Ca2+ In Excitation-Contraction Coupling In Echinoderm Muscle: Comparison With Role In Other Tissues, Robert B. Hill

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The longitudinal muscle of the body wall of Isostichopus badionotus may be considered a model for excitation-contraction coupling in echinoderm muscle. Other echinoderm muscles are reviewed by comparison with the model. Echinoderm muscle is also of interest as a model for ‘mutable collagenous tissue’; however, in that tissue, Ca2+ has been proposed to function both in living control systems and in regulation of non-living interstitial substance.

Conceptual Framework For Greenhouse Gas Sequestration Alternatives, Gary D. Lynne, Colby E. Kruse Jan 2001

Conceptual Framework For Greenhouse Gas Sequestration Alternatives, Gary D. Lynne, Colby E. Kruse

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

The earth has a limited atmospheric capacity to absorb more greenhouse gases generally, and carbon dioxide in particular. It also has a limited capacity for agricultural lands to store a stock of carbon that might be drawn from the atmosphere and thus help alleviate the global warming problem. There are alternative mechanisms and mixes of mechanisms that might be used to address both scarcities and to work within the atmospheric limits on emissions and agricultural limits represented the capacity of soil and land to store carbon. These include a) government regulation, b) tax and subsidy programs, c) spontaneous evolution of …

Carbon Sequestration, Greenhouse Gas Emissions, And Nebraska Agriculture – Background And Potential Jan 2001

Carbon Sequestration, Greenhouse Gas Emissions, And Nebraska Agriculture – Background And Potential

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

Scientists believe that rising levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are contributing to global warming, although to what extent is difficult to determine. While limiting fossil fuel consumption is one method of reducing emissions of carbon to the atmosphere, another is sequestering carbon sources on the land. Carbon sequestration is the use of practices, technologies, or other measures that increase the retention of carbon in soil, vegetation, geologic formations, or the oceans with the effect of offsetting carbon dioxide emissions from other sources.

Nebraska’s agricultural producers can help address greenhouse gas concerns by implementing practices that cause the …

Potential Impacts Of State Meat And Poultry Inspection For The State Of Nebraska, Kara Slaughter, Sam Cordes, Alan Tomkins, Lyn Kathlene Jan 2001

Potential Impacts Of State Meat And Poultry Inspection For The State Of Nebraska, Kara Slaughter, Sam Cordes, Alan Tomkins, Lyn Kathlene

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

Since 1907, Federal law has mandated the inspection of all slaughter and processing establishments engaging in interstate sales of meat and poultry products. In the late 1960’s, Congress expanded the Federal Meat and Poultry Inspection Acts to also require inspection of establishments selling within state lines. At that time, Congress intended for individual states to take on the responsibility for monitoring intra-state meat and poultry sales, using standards “at least equal to” the Federal guidelines for interstate establishments.

At present, 27 states do maintain their own state inspection programs, at an average cost of $1,882,319 per state, per year. In …

Estimating Abundance Of Galliformes: Tools And Application, Michael J. Conroy, John P. Carroll Jan 2001

Estimating Abundance Of Galliformes: Tools And Application, Michael J. Conroy, John P. Carroll

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

A large number of techniques are available for assessing populations of vertebrates. However, application of many of those techniques to Galliformes is hampered by a variety of constraints. These problems are often magnified by poor understanding of the biology of many species of concern, and an absence of valid estimates of abundance and demographic parameters. Researchers interested in developing estimates of Galliformes populations must address a number of key issues before collecting field data, to avoid biases in the resulting population estimates. General guidance exists for the identification of appropriate population estimation techniques, and a dichotomous key has been developed …

Nf01-460 Total Maximum Daily Loads, Tmdls, For Surface Water Pollutants: What They Mean To Nebraska Agriculture, Christopher G. Henry, Thomas G. Franti

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

What is the TMDL Process? A Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) is a written plan specific to a pollutant and a body of water that incorporates water quality monitoring data, exceedence frequency, sample time flow conditions, and the sources that may be contributing to the water quality problem. Its purpose is to identify pollution sources and propose a plan that will help achieve water quality standards for the body of water. The Clean Water Act calls for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to work with state agencies which in turn work with interested parties in an effort to develop TMDLs …

Genetic Heterogeneity Of White-Tailed Deer: Management Lessons From A Long-Term Study, Michael H. Smith, James M. Novak, J. D. Peles, J. R. Purdue

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Genetic data from a long-term (16-year) study of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on the U.S. Department of Energy's Savannah River Site (SRS) were examined to evaluate spatial and temporal genetic heterogeneity in this species. Based on our analyses of the long-term data set, three major findings emerged, all of which have important implications for management of white-tailed deer: (1) There exists significant spatial genetic heterogeneity in white-tailed deer based on analyses of allozyme frequencies and mtDNA haplotypes. This heterogeneity exists on a much smaller spatial scale than would be expected for such a large and potentially mobile species as 0. …

Characterization Of Uterine Epidermal Growth Factor During Early Pregnancy In Pigs, J. G. Kim, J. L. Vallet, R. K. Christenson Jan 2001

Characterization Of Uterine Epidermal Growth Factor During Early Pregnancy In Pigs, J. G. Kim, J. L. Vallet, R. K. Christenson

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Genomic research has identified a quantitative trait locus for uterine capacity, a component trait contributing to litter size, on porcine chromosome 8. The epidermal growth factor (EGF) gene, on porcine chromosome 8, may influence uterine capacity because of its growth-promoting activities. Using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and iterative screening of a porcine reproductive tissue cDNA library, 4932 bp cDNA sequence coding for porcine EGF precursor was obtained. The predicted protein sequence of the EGF precursor contained 1214 amino acids, similar to human EGF precursor (1207 amino acids, 81% identity). Curiously, the sequence of the mature peptide was less homologous …
