Predicting Factors Of Successful Recovery From Lumbar Spine Surgery Among Workers' Compensation Patients, Scott D. Hodges, S. Craig Humphreys, Jason C. Eck, Laurie A. Covington, Heidi Harrom Feb 2001

Predicting Factors Of Successful Recovery From Lumbar Spine Surgery Among Workers' Compensation Patients, Scott D. Hodges, S. Craig Humphreys, Jason C. Eck, Laurie A. Covington, Heidi Harrom

Student Publications

It is commonly believed that patients who are compensated for a work-related injury have less incentive to return to work. This study evaluated how various factors affected the outcomes of lumbar spine surgery in terms of pain relief, functional status, return to work, and general health. Eighty-seven workers' compensation patients had spinal fusion or microdiskectomy. Subjects were evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively using the Oswestry disability scale and the Visual Analog Scale for Pain. The type of surgery performed significantly affected patient outcomes, while such factors as gender, age, smoking, and litigation were insignificant. Microdiskectomy patients, for example, had greater reduction …

Extinction is a natural process. Today, however, plant and animal species are disappearing world-wide at an accelerated pace. Based on current trends, half of the species on earth will be extinct within the next 100 years. The major cause of this phenomenon is large-scale destruction of native habitats, which has increased since European settlement began in the mid 1800's - in Oregon and throughout the New World.

Once lost, a species can never be recovered, and there is no way of knowing how useful it may have been. We do know that human beings and many of their industries depend …

The authors developed a simple timeline and checklist to help keep the organizers on track.

Object Detection And Activity Recognition In Digital Image And Video Libraries, Ibrahim Burak Ozer Jan 2001

Object Detection And Activity Recognition In Digital Image And Video Libraries, Ibrahim Burak Ozer

Dissertations

This thesis is a comprehensive study of object-based image and video retrieval, specifically for car and human detection and activity recognition purposes. The thesis focuses on the problem of connecting low level features to high level semantics by developing relational object and activity presentations. With the rapid growth of multimedia information in forms of digital image and video libraries, there is an increasing need for intelligent database management tools. The traditional text based query systems based on manual annotation process are impractical for today's large libraries requiring an efficient information retrieval system. For this purpose, a hierarchical information retrieval system …

What Meaneth The Words That Are Written?, Ann Madsen Jan 2001

What Meaneth The Words That Are Written?, Ann Madsen

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

When the prophet Abinadi preached repentance to the Nephites, the people were upset and turned him over to King Noah. While in the king’s presence, Abinadi explained to the king and to the priests the meaning of Isaiah’s messianic prophecies. Although they did not heed Abinadi’s teaching, modern readers of the Book of Mormon are now able to better understand the life of Jesus Christ and the key principles of the atonement through Abinadi’s teachings.

Development And Application Of A Computer Simulation Tool For Ecological Risk Assessments, Haiyi Lu Jan 2001

Development And Application Of A Computer Simulation Tool For Ecological Risk Assessments, Haiyi Lu

Theses

In an effort to improve tools in ecological risk assessment (ERA), an ERA software tool was developed and applied. Based on a preliminary evaluation of existing ecorisk models, the relative deficiencies were identified and included the need for a user-friendly interface, an interactive database management system (DBMS), and a comprehensive evaluation of exposure pathways. In this research, Visual Basic (VB) 6.0 and Microsoft SQL server were selected for developing the Windows-based interface and local DBMS, respectively. For the exposure estimate, Yuma and Aberdeen Proving Grounds were identified as baseline ecosystems. Terrestrial and aquatic plant and animal receptor selection was based …

Managing Toxic And Hazardous Substances Of Concern In Manufacturing, Craig Jancerak Jan 2001

Managing Toxic And Hazardous Substances Of Concern In Manufacturing, Craig Jancerak

Theses

This thesis examined data management from an object relational database perspective. The database used was a product from Cornell University called PREDATOR. The context of the evaluation is the life-cycle of a manufactured product. The manufacturing life-cycle was chosen to correspond to an environmental life-cycle being done at NJIT. However, the goal was to use a generic model that could be applied to many situations.

The first phase developed the conceptual life-cycle model. At a high level, the model was not designed with a programming language in mind. Several questions needed to be answered and the a [sic] model answers …

An Examination Of Discourse Concerned With Pcb Remediation In The Hudson River, Jennifer M. Coffey Jan 2001

An Examination Of Discourse Concerned With Pcb Remediation In The Hudson River, Jennifer M. Coffey

Theses

Remediation of PCB contamination in the Hudson River is an issue hotly contested within local communities, the media, and between government agencies and corporate entities. In recent years, the EPA has decided to revisit their 1984 no-action decision for the Hudson River and in December 2000, issued a Feasibility Study recommending partial dredging of the 200 miles of the Hudson floor deemed a Superfund site. The EPA's reevaluation of their 1984 decision has spurred an enormous amount of literature from corporate, non-profit volunteer, and government agencies.

The rhetorical theory of social constructionism and the ethical theory of environmental pragmatism are …

Other Ancient American Records Yet To Come Forth, Monte S. Nyman Jan 2001

Other Ancient American Records Yet To Come Forth, Monte S. Nyman

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Many critics of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe that there cannot be any scripture added to the Bible, thus making the Book of Mormon blasphemous. However, many scriptures refer to other books of scriptures, including the Book of Mormon and other records that are not currently available to the world. Monte S. Nyman discusses here the plausibility of receiving modern revelation and scripture from God. He also suggests that by studying the Book of Mormon and other scriptures in conjunction with the Bible, Latter-day Saints can better prepare for the day when lost records are restored.

Lehi's Altar And Sacrifice In The Wilderness, David Rolph Seely Jan 2001

Lehi's Altar And Sacrifice In The Wilderness, David Rolph Seely

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

After the Book of Mormon prophet Lehi left Jerusalem with his family, he built an altar in the wilderness and offered a sacrifice to God. This practice appears to contradict biblical law as outlined in Deuteronomy 12, which states that sacrifices should be made only on an altar within a temple. However, David Rolph Seely provides three possible explanations as to why Lehi was not breaking the law of Moses.

The article also mentions an artifact found in Bolivia that may have characters in a Semitic script. Locals have asked for assistance in examining the piece, but it is not yet clear whether it is relevant to the Book of Mormon.
