On The Rarity Of Food Provisioning By Male Dickcissels, Lawrence D. Igl, Louis B. Best Feb 2001

On The Rarity Of Food Provisioning By Male Dickcissels, Lawrence D. Igl, Louis B. Best

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Males of polygynous bird species typically provide less parental care to their offspring than males of monogamous species (Ketterson and Nolan 1994). Generally, in polygynous species, a male forfeits some potential reproductive success ifhe shifts his reproductive effort from mating with multiple females to parental care (Trivers 1972, Gubemick et al. 1993, Schleicher et al. 1993). In the polygynous dickcissel (Spiza americana), singing and foraging activities constitute much of a male's time-activity budget (Schartz and Zimmerman 1971, Finck 1984). Although male dickcissels are attentive to their nests and mates (e.g., nest protection and vigilance) females incubate the eggs …

Connective Tissue Growth Factor, Gary R. Grotendorst, Douglas Douglas M. Bradham Feb 2001

Connective Tissue Growth Factor, Gary R. Grotendorst, Douglas Douglas M. Bradham

USF Patents

The invention relates to a method of producing connective tissue growth factor (CTGF). A method of the invention can be performed, for example, by transforming a host cell with a polynucleotide encoding a CTGF polypeptide having an amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 2 or an active fragment thereof; and growing the host cells under conditions suitable for expressing the polynucleotide in the host cell. In an embodiment, the method further involves isolating the CTGF polypeptide or the active fragment. The invention also relates to a method for producing a vector containing a polynucleotide encoding a CTGF polypeptide or …

Comparison Of Conventional And Two-Stage Reversible Flow, Static-Bed Biodenitrification Reactors, Bryan L. Woodbury, Mohamed F. Dahab Feb 2001

Comparison Of Conventional And Two-Stage Reversible Flow, Static-Bed Biodenitrification Reactors, Bryan L. Woodbury, Mohamed F. Dahab

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

This paper compares the operation of a traditional single-stage system with a two-stage, reversible flow biodenitrification system for removing nitrates from drinking water. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of these two-stage systems to remove nitrate and residual organics from treated water as compared to single-stage units. In the reversible flow system, the second-stage (i.e. follow) reactor is operated in series with the first-stage (i.e. lead) reactor. After a given period of operation, the flow regime is reversed so that the follow reactor becomes the lead one and vice versa. The active solids remaining in the …

Design For A Portable Reindeer Crush, Greg Finstad, Lyle Renecker Feb 2001

Design For A Portable Reindeer Crush, Greg Finstad, Lyle Renecker

Circulars

In Alaska, reindeer are managed under both free-ranging and farm conditions. W here reindeer are herded, they are handled twice yearly to harvest velvet antlers and to perform health and record-keeping duties. Under farm conditions, rein deer are handled more frequently to provide routine health care and monitor weight gain. In both types o f management there is a need to efficiently and safely restrain the animal with minimal stress to it. A pneumatic crush for red deer is manufactured in New Zealand and has been used in Alaska for years to restrain reindeer. However, this crush is both expensive …

Pulmonary Arterial Remodeling Revealed By Microfocal X-Ray Tomography, Kelly L. Karau, Robert C. Molthen, Anita H. Dhyani, Steven Thomas Haworth, Christopher A. Dawson Feb 2001

Pulmonary Arterial Remodeling Revealed By Microfocal X-Ray Tomography, Kelly L. Karau, Robert C. Molthen, Anita H. Dhyani, Steven Thomas Haworth, Christopher A. Dawson

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Animal models and micro-CT imaging are useful for understanding the functional consequences of, and identifying the genes involved in, the remodeling of vascular structures that accompanies pulmonary vascular disease. Using a micro-CT scanner to image contrast-enhanced arteries in excised lungs from fawn hooded rats (a strain genetically susceptible to hypoxia induced pulmonary hypertension), we found that portions of the pulmonary arterial tree downstream from a given diameter were morphometrically indistinguishable. This 'self-consistency' property provided a means for summarizing the pulmonary arterial tree architecture and mechanical properties using a parameter vector obtained from measurements of the contiguous set of vessel segments …
