Blinded By Vision, Craig A. Dowd Mar 2001

Blinded By Vision, Craig A. Dowd

Theses and Graduate Projects

Conventional wisdom states vision is a requirement of husiness leadership, but the husiness community suffers from confusion and inconsistent application of the concept. A critical analysis of the concept reveals its popularity is based on rhetoric rather than a clear conceptualization of the term. (The term's literal meaning is the "experience of seeing God".) Without an academically useful definition, "vision" collapses under the weight of disparate and conflicting ideas. This thesis proposes that the problems with "vision" may be resolved by discarding the term completely and then separating the structure and function of leadership from the behavior of leaders and …

South Dakota's Hog Market: Developments And Prospects, Matthew Diersen Mar 2001

South Dakota's Hog Market: Developments And Prospects, Matthew Diersen

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

This paper examines the developments that have occurred in South Dakota's swine industry and offers insights into its future prospects. Data, trends, and literature related to this market were gathered in an effort to fill in specific gaps about South Dakota's market. Nationally and in South Dakota there are fewer producers raising hogs. The exit of relatively small producers from the industry reduced a seasonal spike of farrowings during the March-May quarter in recent years. A growing trend of in shipments, where feeder pigs are brought into South Dakota, finished, and marketed, has partially offset the reduction in farrowings. An …

Review Of Antillean Bats Of The Genus Ariteus, Hugh H. Genoways Mar 2001

Review Of Antillean Bats Of The Genus Ariteus, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

The genus Ariteus as currently understood is represented by a single species Ariteus flavescens, which is confined to island of Jamaica in the Greater Antilles. It is surprising given the restricted distribution of the species that it was among the first of the New World bats to be described (Gray, 183 1). Philip Henry Gosse (1851) was the first to publish on the natural history of this bat, but he described it under the name of two new species, which subsequently have been treated as junior synonyms of A. flavescens. Until the 1970s, less than 50 recent specimens …

Usefulness Of Subjective Ovine Milk Scores: I. Associations With Range Ewe Characteristics And Lamb Production, G. D. Snowder, A.D. Knight, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. M. Bromley, T. R. Kellom Mar 2001

Usefulness Of Subjective Ovine Milk Scores: I. Associations With Range Ewe Characteristics And Lamb Production, G. D. Snowder, A.D. Knight, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. M. Bromley, T. R. Kellom

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Range ewes are commonly evaluated for milking ability by producers to determine the ewe’s ability to rear lamb(s). The U.S. Sheep Experiment Station has subjectively scored (low, average, high) a ewe’s milking ability within 24 h of lambing for many years. The relationship of subjective milk scores with lamb production was investigated using lambing records of Columbia (n = 1,731), Polypay (n = 1,129), Rambouillet (n = 1,704), and Targhee (n = 1,638) ewes. The incidence of high milk scores increased from less than 10% at first parity to 29 to 40% at second and greater parities. At maturity, Columbia …

Usefulness Of Subjective Ovine Milk Scores: Ii. Genetic Parameter Estimates, G. D. Snowder, L. Dale Van Vleck, A. D. Knight, T. R. Kellom, C. M. Bromley Mar 2001

Usefulness Of Subjective Ovine Milk Scores: Ii. Genetic Parameter Estimates, G. D. Snowder, L. Dale Van Vleck, A. D. Knight, T. R. Kellom, C. M. Bromley

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Genetic parameters for a subjective milk score given to ewes within 24 h of parturition were estimated to determine the usefulness of milk score as a selection trait to improve milk production, which influences total litter weight weaned. Heritability of milk score and the genetic correlation of milk score with litter weight weaned were estimated by REML separately for four sheep breeds, Rambouillet (n = 1,731), Targhee (n = 1,638), Columbia (n = 1,731), and Polypay (n = 1,129). Litter weight weaned was the total weight of lambs weaned at approximately 120 d of age under a western range production …

A Multiplex Pcr Assay For Differentiating Economically Important Gastrointestinal Nematodes Of Cattle, Dante S. Zarlenga, M. Barry Chute, Louis C. Gasbarre, Patricia C. Boyd Mar 2001

A Multiplex Pcr Assay For Differentiating Economically Important Gastrointestinal Nematodes Of Cattle, Dante S. Zarlenga, M. Barry Chute, Louis C. Gasbarre, Patricia C. Boyd

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

A multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test was developed for identifying gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes that commonly infect cattle. This assay was developed using adult-derived genomic DNA and shown capable of discriminating parasite eggs from the feces of experimentally-infected animals at both the species and genus levels. Sequence data from internal (ITS) and external (ETS) transcribed spacers of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA) repeats as well as the 3′-end of the small subunit rDNA and 5′-end of the large subunit rDNA were used to generate five primer sets which, when used simultaneously in a multiplex PCR, produce a unique electrophoretic DNA banding …
