College Sports Wagering: A Case Study About Gambling On College Athletics And The Motivations And Consequences Surrounding Legislation Wanting To Ban Wagering On College Sports, Neil H. Huffey Apr 2001

College Sports Wagering: A Case Study About Gambling On College Athletics And The Motivations And Consequences Surrounding Legislation Wanting To Ban Wagering On College Sports, Neil H. Huffey

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Sports wagering is the largest form of gambling in the world. In the United States, the practice is largely illegal. Nonetheless, it has sustained incredible growth both legally and illegally throughout the twentieth century. Current legislation in Congress would revise a 1992 federal law that banned legal sports wagering in this country with the exemption of four particular states, Nevada included. The state of Nevada is the only place in which wagering on college sports is legally practiced. The State of Oregon runs a small sports betting game out if its lottery. Proponents of the legislation suggest that passage is …

Characterization Of The Cd154-Positive And Cd40-Positive Cellular Subsets Required For Pathogenesis In Retrovirus-Induced Murine Immunodeficiency, Kathy A. Green, Randolph J. Noelle, Brigit G. Durell, William R. Green Apr 2001

Characterization Of The Cd154-Positive And Cd40-Positive Cellular Subsets Required For Pathogenesis In Retrovirus-Induced Murine Immunodeficiency, Kathy A. Green, Randolph J. Noelle, Brigit G. Durell, William R. Green

Dartmouth Scholarship

Genetically susceptible C57BL/6 (B6) mice that are infected with the LP-BM5 isolate of murine retroviruses develop profound splenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, hypergammaglobulinemia, terminal B-cell lymphomas, and an immunodeficiency state bearing many similarities to the pathologies seen in AIDS. Because of these similarities, this syndrome has been called murine AIDS (MAIDS). We have previously shown that CD154 (CD40 ligand)-CD40 molecular interactions are required both for the initiation and progression of MAIDS. Thus, in vivo anti-CD154 monoclonal antibody (MAb) treatment inhibited MAIDS symptoms in LP-BM5-infected wild-type mice when either a short course of anti-CD154 MAb treatment was started on the day of infection or …

“A Man Of God And A Good Kind Father”: Brigham Young At Home, Dean C. Jessee Apr 2001

“A Man Of God And A Good Kind Father”: Brigham Young At Home, Dean C. Jessee

BYU Studies

On January 31, 1857, Brigham Young (fig. 1) walked into the Church Historian's Office in Salt Lake City and gave instructions that he wanted very little about his family included in the history of the Church. His reticence no doubt stemmed form people's curiosity about the Mormon leader's polygamous lifestyle, which subjected his family to an inordinate amount of scrutiny and ridicule in the public press. Consequently, during his lifetime, the story of Brigham Young's family remained largely untold. Even now, the literature about Brigham Young focuses disproportionately on his public life, his accomplishments as Church President, colonizer, governor of …

The Environmental Ethics Of Mormon Belief, George B. Handley Apr 2001

The Environmental Ethics Of Mormon Belief, George B. Handley

BYU Studies

The time has come to find common ground between environmentalism and Mormon belief. The perceived divide between the two has all but shut down the possibility of dialogue. Some Mormons dismiss the political causes of environmentalists as being the fears of faithless hedonists, just as otherwise responsible environmental scholars and activists sometimes perpetuate myths and inaccuracies about what they perceive to be the anti-ecological stance of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But Mormon belief has more than enough in common with environmentalism to promote genuine and productive change in our environmental behavior. Not only is Mormon doctrine …

Relationships Among The Non-Byzantine Manuscripts Of 2 Peter, Terry Dwain Robertson Apr 2001

Relationships Among The Non-Byzantine Manuscripts Of 2 Peter, Terry Dwain Robertson

Faculty Publications

One of the ongoing discussions in NT text-critical studies involves the methodology for classifying manuscripts into families and text-types.' This study focuses on the text of 2 Peter, following a three-step method. First, all the manuscripts in the study were compared and tentatively grouped through hierarchical cluster analysis. Next, based on these tentative groupings, profiles of non-majority text readings were created. Then, working with and refining these profiles, the groupings were finalized. A short profile of test readings is also provided for each group to aid in the quick identification of other manuscripts. With the groupings in hand, the next …

Consumer Views On Genetically Modified Crops, Levente Timar Apr 2001

Consumer Views On Genetically Modified Crops, Levente Timar

Major Themes in Economics

Differences in consumer views about genetically modified crops have recently lead to trade disputes between the United States and the countries of the European Union. This paper uses a simple cost-benefit model to examine what factors influence consumer views on modified crops, and analyses them in an attempt to explain the observed difference between the American and European perspectives. Potential socio-economic, health and environmental effects interact with personal beliefs to shape consumer views. It is argued that most of the difference in opinions can be traced back to the lack of accurate information. There is a difference in the perceived …

China: Unfulfilled Promise, Matthew Gernes Apr 2001

China: Unfulfilled Promise, Matthew Gernes

Major Themes in Economics

At the turn of the first millennium A.D. the Chinese empire was perhaps the most technologically and economically advanced civilization on the planet. Economic historians continue to wonder why China stopped progressing along a path which seemed to promise an industrial revolution similar to that experienced by the West. This paper examines how the social and political institutions which made pre-industrial China different from Europe may have prevented such a revolution from happening. The imperial bureaucracy, Confucian philosophy and the centralized nature of the empire all played a role in preventing China from escaping the pre-modern world until the 20th …

A Time To Keep Silent And A Time To Speak: The Functions Of Silence In The Lawyering Process, Stefan H. Krieger Apr 2001

A Time To Keep Silent And A Time To Speak: The Functions Of Silence In The Lawyering Process, Stefan H. Krieger

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The purpose of this Article is to explore the theories of silence developed in other disciplines and apply them to an understanding of silence in different aspects of the lawyering process. This Article will first consider the purposes of speech and the general relationship between utterances and silence. It will then examine the various forms and functions of silence: pauses and hesitations; intervening silences; fore and after silences; silences to communicate assent; silences to promote discussion; silence as an assertion of power; deep silences communicating intense emotions; and silences to mark interpersonal distance. Then this Article will address cross-cultural differences …

Mandatory Minimum Sentences And Women With Disabilities, Fiona Sampson Apr 2001

Mandatory Minimum Sentences And Women With Disabilities, Fiona Sampson

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article examines the issue of mandatory minimum sentencing from the unique perspective of women with disabilities. Concerns about the discriminatory application of mandatory minimum sentences are outlined and analyzed from a gendered disability perspective, as are concerns about the devaluation of the lives of persons with disabilities through the support of reduced sentences for those convicted of murdering persons with disabilities. This examination makes it clear that the different concerns of women with disabilities are difficult to reconcile, as they mandate contradictory positions with respect to the possible abolition of the sentencing practice. The challenges inherent in the development …

Influence Of Nicotine On Sexual Maturation And Uterine Contractile Response To Oxytocin Or Serotonin In Female Albino Rats, Karawan Abdel Rahman, Somaia Mokbel Apr 2001

Influence Of Nicotine On Sexual Maturation And Uterine Contractile Response To Oxytocin Or Serotonin In Female Albino Rats, Karawan Abdel Rahman, Somaia Mokbel

Mansoura Medical Journal

It has been found previously that nicotine inhibits ovulation and fertilization both in vivo and in vitro in rats. Furthermore the onset of puberty was reported to be associated with changes in pulsatile gonadotrophm -releasing hormones secretion in the hypothalamus. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that nicotine perturbs the onset of puberty and to explain the mechanism of this effect. In addition, it has been reported previously that nicotine may alter uterine fallopian tube function which mediate gamete and conceptus transport, so this work was also aiming at evaluation of difference in response of isolated …

Comparative Study Of Metformin And Captopril On Insulin Sensitivity In High-Fructose Fed Rats, Somaia A. Mokbel, Karawan M. Abdel Rahman

Mansoura Medical Journal

Insulin resistance or compensatory hyperinsulinemia has been associated with dyslipidemia. Tumour necrosis factor-( (TNF-ci) may be an important circulating cytokine which may provide a potentially reversible mechanism for mediating insulin resistance. The present study was carried out to compare the be. ^ricial effect of either the oral antidiabetic (metformin) or the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (captopril) on insulin sensitivity in rats fed high-fructose diet for 9 weeks. Other contribution of this work is to find if the improving effect of metformin or captopril on insulin resistance occurs through modulation of TNF-cx or not. 108 male albino rats were used throughout …
