A Comparison Of Two Arts Programs Implemented In Two Elementary Schools In Hamilton County, Tennessee, Jayne Denton Apr 2001

A Comparison Of Two Arts Programs Implemented In Two Elementary Schools In Hamilton County, Tennessee, Jayne Denton

Honors Theses

A wide variety of theoretical backgrounds can exist between two different art programs. This paper observes and compares two different art programs that are currently being implemented in two elementary schools of the Hamilton County Department of Education. The theoretical background of the first program, Arts Integration (AI), promotes the teaching art in combination with other subjects. The theoretical background of the second program, Discipline-Based Art Education(DBAE), promotes the teaching of art as its own subject area. First, this paper briefly describes the history of each program, including explanations of the curriculum, program antecedents, and both positive and negative critical analysis. …

Co-Constructed Interpersonal Perceptions Of Self: Meaning-Making In The Astrological Consultation, Jean Alice Richey Apr 2001

Co-Constructed Interpersonal Perceptions Of Self: Meaning-Making In The Astrological Consultation, Jean Alice Richey

Communication

This research study employs qualitative narrative analysis in order to develop an understanding of co-constructed meaning of self-identity within the astrological practitioner-client relationship. The literature review includes theoretical perspectives from interpersonal communication, the social construction of reality and of self-identity, and transpersonal studies. Three emergent themes from six narrative interviews are discussed in regard to co-constructed constitutive interpretations of self-identity: (1) cultural stranger/insider standpoint, (2) worldview metaphors, (3) and recognition of a socially embedded self. The consultation narrative illustrates the constitution of identity in interaction with an other who is afforded the status of "professional" regarding the interaction itself. Like …

Mediated Identity And Negotiated Tradition: The Inupiaq Atigi, 1850--2000, Cydny Brynn Martin Apr 2001

Mediated Identity And Negotiated Tradition: The Inupiaq Atigi, 1850--2000, Cydny Brynn Martin

Anthropology

The Inupiaq parka and associated activities constitute an unbroken practice from the prehistoric to modern times. The overall form and use of the garment remains constant while materials and technology evolve. Inupiaq parkas, often categorized as art because of their craft, creativity, and aesthetic appeal, also serve as tangible reminders of cultural abstractions. When considered within the age-old Inupiaq subsistence system, the position of women and the role of parka sewing suggests that both are critical to the maintenance of the human/animal relationship central to Inupiaq culture. The Inupiaq parka is seen to mediate between the physical and spiritual relationship …

Keeper Of The Seal: The Art Of Henry Wood Elliott And The Salvation Of The Alaska Fur Seals, Lisa Marie Morris Apr 2001

Keeper Of The Seal: The Art Of Henry Wood Elliott And The Salvation Of The Alaska Fur Seals, Lisa Marie Morris

Anthropology

This thesis examines the art of Henry Wood Elliott (1846--1930) and its role in Elliott's successful crusade to save the Pribilof Island fur seals from probable extinction, its importance as a visual record of the nineteenth-century Pribilof Aleut people during a time of societal transition, and how the art reveals the guiding aspirations of the artist. Elliott was one of the first American artists to work in Alaska. An experienced field artist who had served on two prior government expeditions before his assignment to the Pribilof Islands, Elliott used his watercolors of the fur seals in a successful nationwide campaign …

The Implications Of Agriculture In Interior Alaska For Population Dynamics Of Canada Geese, Michael William Eichholz Apr 2001

The Implications Of Agriculture In Interior Alaska For Population Dynamics Of Canada Geese, Michael William Eichholz

Theses (Unassigned)

Understanding how environmental change affects demography is essential for understanding and managing populations. An anthropogenic change in the environment that has affected wildlife populations is widespread agricultural development. Agriculture has both negatively and positively impacted abundance of species by affecting a variety of vital rates that influence population abundance. In this study, I describe the migration ecology of Canada geese (Branta canadensis) that nest and stage in Interior Alaska. I also describe how the introduction of agriculture has potentially positively impacted population dynamics of Canada geese by increasing nutrient acquisition, thereby improving their fecundity and survival. Two subspecies of Canada …

Structure-Function Relationship Of The Developing Acetylcholine Receptor In Amphibians, Michael Patrick Sullivan Apr 2001

Structure-Function Relationship Of The Developing Acetylcholine Receptor In Amphibians, Michael Patrick Sullivan

Theses (Unassigned)

The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor is responsible for the transfer of signals from the peripheral nervous system to skeletal muscle, resulting in movement. Despite the importance of the acetylcholine receptor, many questions remain unanswered about the relationship between the structure and function of the receptor. The purpose of our research was to explain certain features of the relationship between the amino acid sequence and the function of the amphibian nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. We focused on describing the structural elements underlying the physiologic changes that occur during development and re-innervation of damaged mature muscle. We used molecular biological techniques to alter the …

Daily Meal Patterns, Voluntary Food Intake And Fattening Of Reindeer During Winter And Responses To Insulin, Raphaela Stimmelmayr Apr 2001

Daily Meal Patterns, Voluntary Food Intake And Fattening Of Reindeer During Winter And Responses To Insulin, Raphaela Stimmelmayr

Theses (Unassigned)

I determined the effect of insulin injections on daily feeding behavior and voluntary food intake (VFI) in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus t. ) fed a concentrate ration during winter. Food intake in the absence of insulin injections was down regulated and characterized by small, regular meals during daylight and irregular and sometimes large nighttime meals. Each large nighttime meal was associated with a long post-meal interval. Daytime meal size could be predicted from an estimate of the energy deficit incurred since the previous meal; however, the occasional oversized nighttime meals were not predicted from energy deficit and suggested that appetite may …

Heat Increment And Methane Production By Muskoxen Fed Browse, James Patrick Lawler Apr 2001

Heat Increment And Methane Production By Muskoxen Fed Browse, James Patrick Lawler

Biological Sciences

Many browse species contain anti-herbivory compounds that deter consumers by their toxicity or digestive inhibitory effects. Animals that consume browse are assumed to pay a detoxification energy cost, which increases the heat increment of feeding (HIF). Ruminants also lose potentially metabolizable energy as methane (CH4); but browse may lower CH4 production. I hypothesized that increases in energy loss to HIF by animals eating browse could be offset by a reduction in energy lost via CH4 production. Muskoxen eat both graminoids and browse and are considered to be energetically conservative due to their existence in a sparse arctic environment. These traits …

Alexander Archipelago Wolves: Ecology And Population Viability In A Disturbed, Insular Landscape, David Karl Person Apr 2001

Alexander Archipelago Wolves: Ecology And Population Viability In A Disturbed, Insular Landscape, David Karl Person

Biological Sciences

The Alexander Archipelago wolf (Canis lupus ligoni) occupies Southeast Alaska, a region undergoing intensive harvest of timber. Sitka black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis) are the primary prey of these wolves. We conducted a telemetry study of 23 wolves on Prince of Wales and adjacent islands in Southeast Alaska between September 1992 and October 1995. We examined home range, habitat use, reproduction, mortality, and dispersal of wolves in logged landscapes and those that were relatively unlogged. We used those data to parameterize a wolf-deer model to predict long-term effects of timber harvest on the wolf-deer system on Prince of Wales and …

What's The Economic Importance Of Alaska's Healthy Ecosystems?, Steve Colt Apr 2001

What's The Economic Importance Of Alaska's Healthy Ecosystems?, Steve Colt

ISER Reports

About one quarter of Alaska’s jobs depend in one way or another on the state's fish, wildlife, scenic beauty, recreational opportunities, and public lands. That’s a rough estimate of what healthy ecosystems contribute to the economy. Salmon and other natural assets depend on habitat, clean water, and other benefits from Alaska’s ecosystems.2 Those natural assets in turn support jobs—about 84,000, once we adjust for some double-counting across industries. We include only jobs that depend on healthy ecosystems and natural assets and that are sustainable year after year. About half the ecosystem-related jobs rely on commercial, sport, and subsistence harvests of …

Ecology Of Juvenile Pink Salmon In The North Gulf Of Alaska And Prince William Sound, Jennifer Lynn Boldt Apr 2001

Ecology Of Juvenile Pink Salmon In The North Gulf Of Alaska And Prince William Sound, Jennifer Lynn Boldt

Fisheries

Increased production of salmon in Alaska has been accompanied by a decrease in average body size and decreased wild stocks, indicating a possible density-dependent response to increases in salmon populations and hatchery releases. Pink salmon have a short two-year life cycle and most post-hatch mortality is thought to occur during their first months at sea; therefore, processes in the early marine residence period may determine abundance. Geographic and seasonal patterns in distribution, growth, and condition of juvenile pink salmon during their first months at sea were examined in Chapter 1. The migration of pink salmon from Prince William Sound (PWS) …
