Dr. Darwin Meet The Great Physician, Alan L. Gillen Jul 2001

Dr. Darwin Meet The Great Physician, Alan L. Gillen

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Darwinists have repeatedly used the terms “constrained” and “failing” physiology to describe our heart and blood vessels. After all, the leading cause of death in the United States is cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease, stroke, and atherosclerosis. Therefore, by Darwinian reasoning, the anatomical and physiological design of the circulatory system must be bad, and evolution in its randomness has given us a “raw” deal. This position is stated by Nesse and Williams (1995, p. 5), “Bones, physiology, the nervous system — the body has thousands of consummate designs that elicit our wonder and admiration. By contrast, however, many aspects …

Culture Carol: Dickens's Influence On Lds Christmas Fiction, Rosalynde Frandsen Welch Jul 2001

Culture Carol: Dickens's Influence On Lds Christmas Fiction, Rosalynde Frandsen Welch

BYU Studies

During the festive weeks before Christmas feasts, everybody loves to hate Scrooge. That's how it always was in the household of my childhood. On the first Sunday afternoon of December, my father would gather the children in the family room and ceremonially produce our green hardbound edition of A Christmas Carol. He worked his way through the five staves of the Carol during that afternoon and the Sunday afternoons that followed, in order to complete the reading before Christmas Day. Although the younger children would fidget and the older children would complain, we needed the annual retelling of the …

Tools Leave Marks: Material Analysis Of The Scotford-Soper-Savage Michigan Relics, Richard B. Stamps

BYU Studies

Extensive collections of supposedly prehistoric artifacts known as the Michigan Relics or the Scotford-Soper-Savage collection—possibly as many as 3,000 pieces—exist across the country. I have personally examined more than 1,000 from four different collections. What is so special about this collection of artifacts? Why does it merit further study? Although numerous previous studies have suggested that the materials were not made by ancient people but are of modern origin, there is ongoing interest in the collections. Dr. John Halsey, the state archaeologist of Michigan, says that his office gets more requests to see these materials than any other single collection. …

This report contains the results of the 2001 SDSU South Dakota Farm Real Estate Market Survey, the 11th annual SDSU survey developed to estimate agricultural land values and cash rental rates by land use in different regions of South Dakota.

The Inherent Constitutionality Of The Police Use Of Deadly Force To Stop Dangerous Pursuits, Michael Douglas Owens Jul 2001

The Inherent Constitutionality Of The Police Use Of Deadly Force To Stop Dangerous Pursuits, Michael Douglas Owens

Mercer Law Review

Every day in our country, police agencies pursue criminal suspects who are unlawfully attempling to elude them. Reality-based television shows, such as Cops and the Police Videos series on the Fox Network, bring home to the public some measure of the adrenaline-producing excitement that automobile pursuits engender. Rarely, however, does one see the tragedy that often results from these pursuits. While reliable nationwide statistics on police pursuits are not available, various studies depict the rate of accidents as ranging from twenty-nine percent to seventy percent, with a rate of injury ranging from eleven percent to twenty-seven percent. Injuries and deaths …

Embryonic Stem Cell Research As An Ethical Issue: On The Emptiness Of Symbolic Value, Kevin Quinn Jul 2001

Embryonic Stem Cell Research As An Ethical Issue: On The Emptiness Of Symbolic Value, Kevin Quinn

Faculty Publications

The ability to generate a wide variety of stem cell lines (in relatively renewable tissue cultures) opens up a whole new world of breathtaking possibilities for science and medicine. The possibilities include: "in vitro studies of normal embryo-genesis, human gene discovery, and drug and teratogen testing and as a renewable source of cells for tissue transplantation, cell replacement, and gene therapies." But it also opens up a world of complications.

Human EG and ES cells must be recovered from aborted fetuses or live embryos. Because primordial gonadal tissue is removed from fetuses after their death, the derivation of EO cells …

Intergenerational Service Learning: Bridging The Gap Between Two Golden Ages, K. Dale Layfield Jul 2001

Intergenerational Service Learning: Bridging The Gap Between Two Golden Ages, K. Dale Layfield

Intergenerational

Many programs in agricultural education and FF A focus on students/FFA members working with those in the early years of life. These are worthy efforts and the payoff will hopefully result in increased agricultural awareness among young people. However, caution should be taken to not overlook the rich resource available through interactions with senior citizens. According to the Census Bureau "middle series" projections, the elderly population will more than double between now and the year 2050, to 80 miUion. By that year, as many as 1 in 5 Americans could be elderly. Most of this growth should occur between 2010 …

Temperature Effects On The Dynamics Of Aedes Albopictus (Diptera : Culicidae) Populations In The Laboratory, Barry W. Alto, Steven A. Juliano Jul 2001

Temperature Effects On The Dynamics Of Aedes Albopictus (Diptera : Culicidae) Populations In The Laboratory, Barry W. Alto, Steven A. Juliano

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

We investigated how constant temperatures of 22, 24, and 26 degreesC experienced across the full life cycle affected the dynamics of caged populations of Aedes albopictus (Skuse). All cages were equipped with plastic beakers that served as sites for oviposition and larval development. We measured the per capita daily mortality and emergence rates of the adults and size of adult females, and estimated the intrinsic rate of increase (r) and asymptotic density (K) for each adult population. populations at 26 degreesC had greater intrinsic rates of increase and lower asymptotic densities than populations at 22 and 24 degreesC. Populations at …
