Improved Hopfield Networks By Training With Noisy Data, Fred Clift, Tony R. Martinez
Improved Hopfield Networks By Training With Noisy Data, Fred Clift, Tony R. Martinez
Faculty Publications
A new approach to training a generalized Hopfield network is developed and evaluated in this work. Both the weight symmetricity constraint and the zero self-connection constraint are removed from standard Hopfield networks. Training is accomplished with Back-Propagation Through Time, using noisy versions of the memorized patterns. Training in this way is referred to as Noisy Associative Training (NAT). Performance of NAT is evaluated on both random and correlated data. NAT has been tested on several data sets, with a large number of training runs for each experiment. The data sets used include uniformly distributed random data and several data sets …

Historical Water-Quality Data For The High Plains Regional Ground-Water Study Area In Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, And Wyoming, 1930–98, David W. Litke
United States Geological Survey: Publications
The High Plains aquifer underlies 174,000 square miles in parts of eight States and includes eight primary hydrogeologic units, including the well-known Ogallala Formation. The High Plains aquifer is an important resource, providing water for 27 percent of the Nation’s irrigated agricul¬tural lands in an otherwise dry landscape. Since the 1980’s there has been concern over the sustainability of the aquifer due to water-level declines caused by substantial pumping. Water quality of the aquifer is a more recent concern. As part of the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Water-Quality Assessment Program, historical water-quality data have been gathered for the High Plains …

Factors Influencing Oviposition Among Pond-Breeding Amphibians: Exotic Vegetation, Oviposition Braces, And Cover, Catherine Mary Callison
Factors Influencing Oviposition Among Pond-Breeding Amphibians: Exotic Vegetation, Oviposition Braces, And Cover, Catherine Mary Callison
Dissertations and Theses
I examined oviposition in four pond-breeding amphibians (northwestern salamander [Ambystoma gracile], long-toed salamander [Ambystoma macrodactylum], Pacific treefrog [Hyla regilla], northern red-legged frog [Rana aurora aurora]), at Burlington Bottoms, a lowland riverine site in northwestern Oregon, to determine whether differential use of native versus exotic plant substrates occurs. I found differential use in all four species, but use was inconsistent with the hypothesis that selection for native plants (or selection against exotic plants) was occurring. If selection was occurring, the pattern implied that reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea), a widespread exotic in this lowland system, was sometimes favored. However, inconsistent use of …

Physics
Off-axis electron holography in the transmission electron microscope is used to characterize the magnetic microstructure of magnetotactic bacteria. The practical details of the technique are illustrated through the examination of single cells of strains MV-1 and MS-1, which contain crystals of magnetite (Fe3O4) that are ~50nm in size and are arranged in chains. Electron holography allows the magnetic domain structures within the nanocrystals to be visualized directly at close to the nanometer scale. The crystals are shown to be single magnetic domains. The magnetization directions of small crystals that would be superparamagnetic if they were isolated …

Expression Of A Heterologous Protein C In Mammary Tissue Of Transgenic Animals Using A Long Whey Acidic Protein Promoter , William H. Velander, Henryk Lubton, William N. Drohan, Lothar Hennighausen
Papers in Biotechnology
An isolated DNA sequence which regulates the expression of a heterologous gene composed of a mouse whey acidic protein promoter having a length of greater than about 2.4 kb extending upstream from the unique KpnI site in the mouse whey acidic protein gene is disclosed. Specifically a mouse whey acidic protein promoter of about 4.1-4.2 kb in length extending upstream from the unique KpnI site is preferred. This mouse whey acid protein promoter is operably linked to a DNA sequence encoding a heterologous polypeptide and used to prepare transgenic non-human mammals expressing the heterologous polypeptide in their milk. Particularly efficient …
Method And Kit For Locating Hyperactive Parathyroid Tissue Or Adenomatious Tissue In A Patient And For Removal Of Such Tissue, James James G. Norman
Method And Kit For Locating Hyperactive Parathyroid Tissue Or Adenomatious Tissue In A Patient And For Removal Of Such Tissue, James James G. Norman
USF Patents
Disclosed herein are methods for locating hyperactive parathyroid tissue in a patient. The methods comprise providing a radiopharmaceutical which produces during a time window after administration of the radiopharmaceutical to the patient, a detectably greater radioactivity in the hyperactive parathyroid tissue than in adjacent thyroid tissue in the patient; administering the radiopharmaceutical to the patient; surgically opening an operative field in the proximity of the hyperactive parathyroid tissue; and introducing into the operative field during the time window, a probe, which detects the radioactivity produced by the hyperactive parathyroid tissue to determine the location of the hyperactive parathyroid tissue upon …

The Neuropeptide Y Y5 Receptor Mediates The Blockade Of "Photic-Like" Nmda-Induced Phase Shifts In The Golden Hamster, P. C. Yannielli, Mary E. Harrington
The Neuropeptide Y Y5 Receptor Mediates The Blockade Of "Photic-Like" Nmda-Induced Phase Shifts In The Golden Hamster, P. C. Yannielli, Mary E. Harrington
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Circadian or daily rhythms generated from the mammalian suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of the hypothalamus can be synchronized by light and nonphotic stimuli. Whereas glutamate mediates photic information, nonphotic information can in some cases be mediated by neuropeptide Y (NPY) or serotonin. NPY or serotonin can reduce the phase-resetting effect of light or glutamate; however, the mechanisms and level of interaction of these two kinds of stimuli are unknown. Here we investigate the effect of NPY on the NMDA-induced phase shift of the hamster SCN circadian neural activity rhythm by means of single-unit recording techniques. NMDA (10-100 μM) applied in the …
