The Anchor, Volume 115.02: September 5, 2001, Hope College

The Anchor: 2001

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Daily Labor Requirements Under Initiative 300, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

Article 8 §12 of the Nebraska Constitution (Initiative 300) establishes several requirements that corporations must meet in order to legally qualify as family farm or ranch corporations. Under one provision, a majority of the family farm or ranch corporation’s shareholders must be family members, “at least one of whom is a person residing on or actively engaged in the day to day labor and management of the farm or ranch.” In Hall v Progress Pig Inc., 259 Neb 407 (2000) the Nebraska Supreme Court ruled that where no family member resides on the farm or ranch, a family member …

Farnesyl Pyrophosphate Analogs, Hans Peter Spielmann, Douglas A. Andres, Kareem A.H. Chehade Sep 2001

Farnesyl Pyrophosphate Analogs, Hans Peter Spielmann, Douglas A. Andres, Kareem A.H. Chehade

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Patents

The post-translational addition of a farnesyl moiety to the Ras oncoprotein is essential for its membrane localization and is required for both its biological activity and ability to induce malignant transformation. The present invention describes design and synthesis of a farnesylpyrophosphate (FPP) analog, 8-anilinogeranyl pyrophosphate (AGPP) that is transferred to Ras by farnesyltransferase (FTase), in which the ω-terminal isoprene unit of the farnesyl group has been replaced with an aniline functionality. AGPP potently inhibited FTase activity in vitro (IC50=0.6 μM) and is highly selective showing little inhibitory activity against either geranylgeranyl-protein transferase type I (GGTase I) (IC50 …

Eliciting The Low-Activity Aldehyde Dehydrogenase Asian Phenotype By An Antisense Mechanism Results In An Aversion To Ethanol., E Garver, Tu Gc, Q N Cao, M Aini, F Zhou, Y Israel

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

A mutation in the gene encoding for the liver mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2-2), present in some Asian populations, lowers or abolishes the activity of this enzyme and results in elevations in blood acetaldehyde upon ethanol consumption, a phenotype that greatly protects against alcohol abuse and alcoholism. We have determined whether the administration of antisense phosphorothioate oligonucleotides (ASOs) can mimic the low-activity ALDH2-2 Asian phenotype. Rat hepatoma cells incubated for 24 h with an antisense oligonucleotide (ASO-9) showed reductions in ALDH2 mRNA levels of 85% and ALDH2 (half-life of 22 h) activity of 55% equivalent to a >90% inhibition in ALDH2 …

2001-2006

The Frat was the official member publication of the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf (NFSD). First established in 1902, the publication ran for just over a century, until its closure in 2006.---NFSD was an insurance business established in 1901. Its purposes were to provide insurance to mainly Deaf members, to serve as an advocate for the Deaf, and to provide community service and recreational opportunities through divisional activities. The existing insurance coverage was transferred to the Catholic Order of Foresters in 2005. The NFSD disbanded in 2007.---The Frat's main purpose was to keep members apprised of the activities of …

The Edge Of The Universe-Noneuclidean Wallpaper, Frank A. Farris Sep 2001

The Edge Of The Universe-Noneuclidean Wallpaper, Frank A. Farris

Mathematics and Computer Science

A simple mathematical model of a two-dimensional universe, called the Poincaré Upper Halfplane, illustrates the possibility of a universe with an unattainable edge. In this article, I describe this model -a famous example of a noneuclidean geometry-and explain how conversations with an analytic number theorist led me to create wallpaper patterns for its inhabitants. These are interesting not only for their high "Gee whiz!"factor, but also as a window for observing the features of this unusual geometry.

Redressing The Silent Interim: Precautionary Action & Short Term Tests In Toxicological Risk Assessment, Timothy Riley Sep 2001

Redressing The Silent Interim: Precautionary Action & Short Term Tests In Toxicological Risk Assessment, Timothy Riley

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

The author recommends that a stronger emphasis be placed on creating and implementing short-term tests that use iterative, conservative-based, tiered procedures in conjunction with a precautionary attitude during the interim phase of toxicological risk assessments.
