Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

A series of α-amino-β-sulphone hydroxamates was prepared and evaluated for potency versus MMP-13 and selectivity versus MMP-1. Various substituents were employed on the α-amino group (P1 position), as well as different groups attached to the sulphone group extending into P1′. Low nanomolar potency was obtained for MMP-13 with selectivity versus MMP-1 of >1000× for a number of analogues.

α-Amino-β-sulphone hydroxamates were prepared, which are potent MMP-13 inhibitors with selectivity versus MMP-1 of >1000× for a number of analogues. Selected compounds exhibited oral bioavailability.

All Current Publications

Vaccines are an important tool to use in herd health programs for the protection of animal health. However, vaccines do not prevent all disease by themselves, and should be used in conjunction with good management practices. The timing of vaccination and selection of product are important considerations.

The Origins And Constitutionality Of State Unit Voting In The Electoral College, Matthew J. Festa Oct 2001

The Origins And Constitutionality Of State Unit Voting In The Electoral College, Matthew J. Festa

Vanderbilt Law Review

On November 1, 2000, a Joint Resolution was introduced in Congress proposing a constitutional amendment to change the Article II system of electing the President and Vice President' by abolishing the Electoral College. Acknowledging the fact that "there have been more congressionally proposed constitutional amendments on this subject than any other," the sponsoring Senator noted that the issue "could become supremely important in a few days," because "we have the possibility that the winning candidate for President might not win the popular vote in our country.' One prominent legal scholar has described the mere possibility of such an event as …

Let's Cross Platforms, Miyoung Yoon

Theses

Different platforms and browsers render text and images differently. Therefore, web designers should know how to deal with these types of media. Many web designers use the Macintosh, and the majority of the users are on the PC. This thesis project examines the visual elements of web design consisting of fonts, colors, and graphics and how they change between the PC and Mac. The two major browsers used by people to surf the web are Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator and they also cause problems with consistency. Resolution differences cause font problems. Knowing the default system resolution to specify with …

Federalism And The Double Standard Of Judicial Review, Lynn A. Baker, Ernest A. Young Oct 2001

Federalism And The Double Standard Of Judicial Review, Lynn A. Baker, Ernest A. Young

Duke Law Journal

From 1937 to 1995, federalism was part of a “Constitution in exile.” Except for the brief interlude of the National League of Cities doctrine2—which, like Napoleon’s ill-fated return from Elba, met with crushing defeat3—the post–New Deal Supreme Court has been almost completely unwilling to enforce constitutional limits on national power vis-à-vis the states. The reason, by all accounts, has much to do with federalism’s historic link to other aspects of our expatriate constitution—e.g., economic substantive due process, legislative nondelegation— which were banished for their collusion against the New Deal.

The Standardized Fish Bioassay Procedure For Detecting And Culturing Actively Toxic Pfiesteria, Used By Two Reference Laboratories For Atlantic And Gulf Coast States, Joann M. Burkholder, Harold G. Marshall, David W. Seaborn, Nora J. Deamer-Melia Oct 2001

Deamer-Melia

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

In the absence of purified standards of toxins from Pfiesteria species, appropriately conducted fish bioassays are the "gold standard" that must be used to detect toxic strains of Pfiesteria slop. from natural estuarine water or sediment samples and to culture actively toxic Pfiesteria. In this article, we describe the standardized steps of our fish bioassay as an abbreviated term for a procedure that includes two sets of trials with fish, following the Henle-Koch postulates modified for toxic rather than infectious agents. This procedure was developed in 1991, and has been refined over more than 12 years of experience in …

The Emblem And Motto Of The Congregation Of The Mission, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

The emblem of Jesus standing on a globe with his arms stretched downward and the biblical citation Evangelizare pauperibus misit me are the Congregation’s most familiar emblem and motto. They have been known since the time of Vincent de Paul, but have only been used together since the mid-nineteenth century. Their origins and antecedents, along with other emblems and mottos that have been employed, are discussed. Their uses and theological meaning are explained. Twenty-six images are included.
