Familiarity With The Test Environment Improves Escape Responses In The Crimson Spotted Rainbowfish, Melanotaenia Duboulayi, Culum Brown
Sentience Collection
Animals that are familiar with their environment have been reported to have greater survivorship for a number of reasons related to their knowledge of the terrain, which they recall from memory. In an initial experiment rainbowfish significantly improved their escape response towards a novel trawl apparatus over a sequence of five runs. Escape latencies were still low during a subsequent exposure 11 months after the initial exposure. While part of the improvement in escape success was certainly due to learning associated with the location of the escape route, it is likely that this was aided by habituation to the tank …

Compendium Of Chemical Carcinogens By Target Organ: Results Of Chronic Bioassays In Rats, Mice, Hamsters, Dogs, And Monkeys, Lois Swirsky Gold, Neela B. Manley, Thomas H. Sloane, Jerrold M. Ward
Toxicology and Animal Models in Research Collection
Acompendiumof carcinogenesi s bioassay results organized by target organ is presented for 738 chemicals that are carcinogenic in chronic-exposure , long-term bioassays in at least 1 species. This compendium is based primarily on experiments in rats or mice; results in hamsters, monkeys, and dogs are also reported. The compendium can be used to identify chemicals that induce tumors at particular sites and to determine whether target sites are the same for chemicals positive in more than 1 species. The source of information is the Carcinogeni c Potency Database (CPDB), which includes results of 6073 experiments on 1458 chemicals (positive or …

Categorization plays an integral part in how we see and interpret the world. This is especially true when we attempt to comprehend the complexities of human society, where the heterogeneity of human activity across time and space demands that some criterion (class, gender, age, profession, etc.) be used to reduce the number of variables examined. From the mid-nineteenth century—as statistics evolved from the simple “political arithmetic” of tax collectors and army recruiters into a potential science of human behavior—categorizing the population became a contentious issue that reflected the social and political agendas of data collectors. At the same time, when …

Institutional Foundations For Economic Legal Reform In Transition Economies: The Case Of Competition Policy And Antitrust Enforcement, William E. Kovacic
Institutional Foundations For Economic Legal Reform In Transition Economies: The Case Of Competition Policy And Antitrust Enforcement, William E. Kovacic
Chicago-Kent Law Review
The widespread adoption by transition economies of competition policy systems raises important questions about the design and phasing of legal reforms in emerging markets. Success in transition economies in developing useful competition policy programs and other economic legal reforms requires close attention to the establishment of public and private institutions whose effective operation is essential to a legal regime. Properly conceived competition policy programs that account carefully for national circumstances can play a constructive role in promoting economic growth. The content of such programs can be structured to match the institutional capacity of each nation, and the mix of policy …

Grief And Burial In The American Southwest: The Role Of Evolutionary Theory In The Interpretation Of Mortuary Remains, Douglas H. Macdonald
Grief And Burial In The American Southwest: The Role Of Evolutionary Theory In The Interpretation Of Mortuary Remains, Douglas H. Macdonald
Anthropology Faculty Publications
Evolutionary theory, in consort with Marxism and processualism, provides new insights into the interpretation of grave-good variation. Processual interpretations of burial sites in the American Southwest cite age, sex, or social rank as the main determinants of burial-good variation. Marxist theorists suggest that mortuary ritual mediates social tension between an egalitarian mindset and an existing social inequality. Evolutionary theory provides a supplementary explanatory framework. Recent studies guided by kin-selection theory suggest that humans grieve more for individuals of high reproductive value and genetic relatedness. Ethnographic examples also show that individuals mourn more intensively and, thus, place more social emphasis on …
Muslim Perspectives On The Military Orders During The Crusades, William J. Hamblin
Muslim Perspectives On The Military Orders During The Crusades, William J. Hamblin
BYU Studies
On July 4, 1187, the armies of Saladin, sultan of Egypt and Syria, surrounded thousands of Crusaders surmounting the Horns of Hattin (fig. 1) near Tiberias in Galilee. Exhausted by heat, thirst, and days of marching and fighting, the Crusaders were forced to surrender. Thousands of the resulting prisoners were sold into slavery, but not all. While King Guy and the Frankish aristocrats who had led their followers to disaster were allowed for the most part to ransom themselves, the knights of the Military Orders faced a different fate. After his triumphant victory, Saladin singled out the captive Templars and …

Brain Surfing: A Strategy For Making Cross-Curricular Connections, Susan Davis Lenski
Brain Surfing: A Strategy For Making Cross-Curricular Connections, Susan Davis Lenski
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Many educators believe that teaching an integrated curriculum should help students develop cross-curricular connections. Often, however, students do not make connections between subject areas even when they are in classrooms with integrated units. This article presents a strategy called Brain Surfing that teachers can use to facilitate connections to subject areas during classroom discussions.

Acoustic Detections Of Singing Humpback Whales In Deep Waters Off The British Isles, Russell Charif, Phillip Clapham, Christopher Clark
Acoustic Detections Of Singing Humpback Whales In Deep Waters Off The British Isles, Russell Charif, Phillip Clapham, Christopher Clark
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
From October 1996 through September 1998, we used bottom-mounted hydrophone arrays to monitor deep-water areas north and west of the British Isles for songs of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). Singing humpbacks were consistently detected between October and March from the Shetland- Faroe Islands south to waters west of the English Channel. Temporal and geographic patterns of song detections, and movements of individually tracked whales, exhibited a southwesterly trend over this period, but with no corresponding northward trend between April and September. These results, together with a review of historical data from this area, suggest that the offshore waters …

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Despite the extensive use of photographic identification methods to investigate humpback whales in the North Pacific, few quantitative analyses have been conducted. We report on a comprehensive analysis of interchange in the North Pacific among three wintering regions (Mexico, Hawaii, and Japan) each with two to three subareas, and feeding areas that extended from southern California to the Aleutian Islands. Of the 6,413 identification photographs of humpback whales obtained by 16 independent research groups between 1990 and 1993 and examined for this study, 3,650 photographs were determined to be of suitable quality. A total of 1,241 matches was found by …

Characteristics And Sequence Of Phosphoglycolate Phosphatase From A Eukaryotic Green Alga Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Tarlan G. Mamedov, Kensaku Suzuki, Kenji Miura, Ken-Ichi Kucho, Hideya Fukuzawa
Papers in Biochemical Engineering
Phosphoglycolate phosphatase (PGPase), a key en¬zyme of photorespiration in photosynthetic organisms, was purified from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The en¬zyme was an ~65-kDa homodimer with a pI value of 5.1 composed of ~32-kDa subunits not connected by any S–S bridges. It was also highly specific for phosphoglycolate with a Km value of 140 μM and an optimal pH between 8 and 9. The activity was strongly inhibited by CaCl2, and it recovered competitively following the addition of MgCl2 or EGTA. A mobility shift was observed in SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis by the addition of CaCl2, indicating that the enzyme binds to Ca2+ . …
