Modeling Flow And Sediment Transport In The Rio Puerco Using A Swat/Gis Interface, Robin L. Just

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The Rio Puerco watershed in northwestern New Mexico is responsible for large quantities of sediment entering the Rio Grande and Elephant Butte Reservoir. The Rio Puerco has a large quantity of sediment movement and channelization as a result of the general erodibility of geologic units, the precipitation patterns, and high topographic relief.

A Mixing Cell Model Of The Fernley, Nevada Groundwater System, Casey W. Cook Oct 2000

A Mixing Cell Model Of The Fernley, Nevada Groundwater System, Casey W. Cook

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Fernley, Nevada is an agricultural community located 56 km east of Reno in the Truckee River basin. The subsurface hydrologic system in the Fernley area is driven by infiltration of irrigation water and leakage from the Truckee Canal, a diversion of the Truckee River. The return flow to the river from these sources is thought to contribute to excessive solute loading in the river. The Desert Research Institute (DRI) in Reno is constructing a groundwater flow and transport model to quantify the magnitude of solute loading and the effectiveness of proposed land use changes in mitigating the problem. The model …

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Massena, New York, located on the St. Lawrence River in upstate New York, is a small industrial town of 16,000 persons. The St. Lawrence River forms the international border between New York State and Ontario, Canada. Three major industries, General Motors, Reynolds Metals, and the Aluminum Company of America, operate large, primary aluminum smelting operations in Massena. Massena was the site selected for the first United Stated aluminum smelters near the Alcoa plant on the St. Lawrence River. All three aluminum smelters continue to operate today. Combined, they take advantage of abundant and cheap hydroelectricity harnessed by the New York …

Military Lessons From Desert One To The Balkans, Ike Skelton Oct 2000

Military Lessons From Desert One To The Balkans, Ike Skelton

Strategic Forums

This Strategic Forum reviews key U.S. military operations from the failed Iran hostage rescue in 1980 through interventions in Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, the Persian Gulf, and the Balkans to identify enduring lessons for future force development. The U.S. military improved significantly after the post-Vietnam period by learning from both failures and successes across these operations. This paper highlights recurring challenges, including unclear missions, coordination gaps, force protection, and the need for effective joint operations. It also emphasizes the growing complexity of missions, which increasingly include peacekeeping, coalition operations, and nontraditional contingencies. Future effectiveness depends on applying past lessons while preparing …

Bend Elasticity Of Mixtures Of V-Shaped Molecules In Ordinary Nematogens, Mohammad Reza Dodge, Charles Rosenblatt, Rolfe G. Petschek

Faculty Scholarship

Freedericksz measurements were performed on mixtures of a nematic mesogen and a V-shaped molecule. The bend elastic constant was found to decrease significantly with increasing concentration of the V-shaped molecule. The results are discussed theoretically, taking into account the detailed structure of the molecules.

Madison's Hope: Virtue, Self-Interest, And The Design Of Electoral Systems, James A. Gardner Oct 2000

Madison's Hope: Virtue, Self-Interest, And The Design Of Electoral Systems, James A. Gardner

Journal Articles

In recent years, perhaps no institution of American governance has been so thoroughly and consistently excoriated by legal theorists as the familiar American system of winner-take-all elections. The winner-take-all system is said to waste votes, lead to majority monopolization of political power, and cause the under representation and consequent social and economic subordination of political minorities. Some political scientists have attempted to defend winner-take-all systems on the ground that they perform better than PR in maximizing long-term collective and social interests. This article argues, in contrast, that winner-take-all electoral systems rest upon, and can be adequately defended, if at all, …

Cleaning Up The Junkyard: An Exploration In Developing An Online Course, Wendi Milam Oct 2000

Cleaning Up The Junkyard: An Exploration In Developing An Online Course, Wendi Milam

Theses and Dissertations

As America enters the 21st century, our systems of education must adapt to the changes in culture and technology. Our visions of the modern classroom are no longer limited to a room on a campus with a professor and a blackboard Many classes are going fully online, some are meeting only once a semester if at all. This type of learning and teaching opens the door for many complex questions: What is the most effective style of web site to use? How should the instructor form the requirements of the class? What should the instructor use for academic evaluation …

Multiplex: Unifying Conventional And Speculative Thread-Level Parallelism On A Chip Multiprocessor, Seon Wook Kim, Chong-Liang Ooi, Il Park, Rudolf Eigenmann, Babak Falsafi, T. N. Vijaykumar Oct 2000

Multiplex: Unifying Conventional And Speculative Thread-Level Parallelism On A Chip Multiprocessor, Seon Wook Kim, Chong-Liang Ooi, Il Park, Rudolf Eigenmann, Babak Falsafi, T. N. Vijaykumar

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Traditional monolithic superscalar architectures, which extract instruction-level parallelism (ILP) to achieve high performance, are not only becoming less effective in improving the clock speed and ILP but also worsening in design complexity and reliability across generations. Chip multiprocessors (CMPs), which exploit thread-level parallelism (TLP), are emerging as an alternative. In one form of TLP, the compilerlprogramrner extracts truly independent explicit threads from the program, and in another, the compiledhardware partitions the program into speculatively independent implicit threads. However, explicit threading is hard to program manually and, if automated, is limited in performance due to serialization of unanalyzable program segments. Implicit …

Immigration: An Overview Of Information Resources, Bert Chapman Oct 2000

Immigration: An Overview Of Information Resources, Bert Chapman

Libraries Research Publications

Immigration has been a subject of intense historical and contemporary debate in US political life. Proponents of immigration cite the important contributions immigrants have made and continue to make to the USA’s national development and evolution. Advocates of more restrictive immigration policies stress concerns over the USA’s ability to support immigrant residents and whether newer immigrants threaten the US national identity and social cohesion. Proponents and opponents of current US immigration policy will use figures from the 2000 census to justify their respective arguments in upcoming debates on this subject. This article examines a variety of immigration literature resources such …

Effects Of Environment & Experience On Underwater Work Performance, Gershon Weltman, Raymond A. Christianson, Glen H. Egstrom Oct 2000

Effects Of Environment & Experience On Underwater Work Performance, Gershon Weltman, Raymond A. Christianson, Glen H. Egstrom

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

Five experienced divers and 15 novice divers completed a complex underwater asembly task and sets of written problems in a water-filled tank and in the ocean. Performance measurements included subtask completion times, problem-solving accuracy, activity analysis, and basic physiological variables. Experienced divers showed essentially unchaged performance between tank and ocean. Novice divers performend slower than the experienced divers in the tank and showed a makred decrement in both assembly time and problem-solving accuracy in the ocean. The results suggest that diving experinece improves underwater motor skills rather than work strategy, and that psychological stress was a significant factor even at …

Group Climate & Individual Functioning In An All-Women Antarctic Expedition Team, P. M. Kahn, G. R. Leon

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

This study focused on four female Antarctic expedition team members who successfully skied to the South Pole in 67 days but did not meet their original objective of traversing the continent. The three phases of data collection included (1) a preexpedition personality assessment, (b) daily self-ratings of mood, task effectiveness, stress, coping, and exertion, and (c) postexpedition interviews about stress and coping. Personality measures showed a group high in confidence and achievement and low in bodily concern and competitiveness. Daily measures demonstrated an extremely well-functioning group with highly effective patterns of work and communication. The most commonly reported stressors were …
