Global Connections In A Changing World: Romanian And U.S. Nurses Unite, Mary G. Schaal, Molly A. Rose, Ann Doherty, Adriana Vilan

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

This article describes an international, interdisciplinary, university partnership project to collaborate with health professionals in the city of Cluj-Napoca, Transylvania, Romania, to improve the health status of Romanian workers. Academic and service-based public health nurses from the United States used the model of community competence in outlining the nursing aspect of the project. This model guided the assessment, objectives, collaborative activities, and the outcome evaluation of the project. The dimensions of the model (e.g., commitment, self-other awareness, articulateness, conflict accommodation, management of relations with larger society, and leadership) were used within the context of the political and social environment of …

Toward Transaction-Specific Standards Of Directorial Fiduciary Duty In The Tracking-Stock Context, Jeffrey J. Schick Oct 2000

Toward Transaction-Specific Standards Of Directorial Fiduciary Duty In The Tracking-Stock Context, Jeffrey J. Schick

Washington Law Review

In recent years, diversified corporations have increasingly turned to tracking stocks to uncouple high-growth businesses, especially Internet-related operations, from more static business entities. Tracking stock is a unique type of common stock that represents an interest in the financial performance of particular business groups within a diversified parent corporation. However, the tracked business groups are not independent of the parent corporation, and the parent's board of directors still governs the affairs of each business group. This creates unique conflicts for directors who must please multiple groups of stockholders whose interests are not always consistent. Delaware courts have not announced a …

A Proposal To Bring The Becca Bill's Runaway-Detention Provisions Into Compliance With Juveniles' Procedural Due Process Rights, Carrie A. Tracy Oct 2000

A Proposal To Bring The Becca Bill's Runaway-Detention Provisions Into Compliance With Juveniles' Procedural Due Process Rights, Carrie A. Tracy

Washington Law Review

The Becca Bill, enacted in Washington State in 1995, changed the way Washington treats runaway juveniles. The Bill creates a series of secure crisis residential centers and authorizes law enforcement officers to take juvenile runaways into custody and place them in these secure facilities. The facilities must keep the admitted juveniles for at least twenty-four hours but no more than five days. This Comment argues that the Becca Bill, which provides no judicial review of the commitment to detention, violates the procedural due process requirements of Washington and U.S. constitutions. While courts have extended procedural due process protection to juveniles' …

Clearly Defining Preclusive Corporate Lock-Ups: A Bright-Line Test For Lock-Up Provisions In Delaware, Michael G. Hatch Oct 2000

Clearly Defining Preclusive Corporate Lock-Ups: A Bright-Line Test For Lock-Up Provisions In Delaware, Michael G. Hatch

Washington Law Review

Merger mania currently grips the United States as corporations scramble to find merger partners to achieve strategic goals. In their quest for a competitive advantage, large corporations are increasingly willing to use hostile takeovers to deny competitors the benefits of a strategic mergers. In response, merging corporations have granted record-breaking lockup. provisions in an attempt to protect their deals. Delaware's current framework for evaluating the validity of lock-up provisions requires courts to apply different levels of scrutiny depending on the form of the transaction. However, Delaware courts have inconsistently applied the correct standard and have failed to identify preclusive lock-ups. …

Atrazine Induction Of Cytochrome P450 In Chironomus Tentans Larvae, Francisca Miota, Blair Siegfried, Michael E. Scharf, Michael J. Lydy Oct 2000

Atrazine Induction Of Cytochrome P450 In Chironomus Tentans Larvae, Francisca Miota, Blair Siegfried, Michael E. Scharf, Michael J. Lydy

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Cytochrome P450-dependent aldrin epoxidation was characterized in third instar larvae of the aquatic midge, Chironomus tentans. Optimal in vitro assay conditions for the epoxidase were pH 7.6 and 31°C. Activity was linear up to 40 min of incubation time and 0.5 mg microsomal protein per incubation. The activity was concentrated in the mic rosomal fraction of whole body homogenates and was NADPH-dependent. The effect of atrazine exposure on aldrin epoxidase was measured to determine if this herbicide induces cytochrome P450-dependent activity. Comparisons of control and atrazine-exposed midges indicated increased epoxidase activity as a result of atrazine exposure, and a …

Adverse Reactions Of Intravenous Immunoglobulin, Adel M. Al-Wahadneh, Imad A. Khriesat, Emad H. Kudu

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To study the frequency, type, and severity of adverse reactions to intravenous immunoglobulin infusions and possible preventable measures. METHODS: We prospectively studied the frequency, type, and severity of adverse reactions in 104 intravenous immunoglobulin infusions (IntraglobinTMF) given to 13 patients suffering from several immunodeficiency and autoimmune diseases over 15 months in King Hussein Medical Center. The severity of the reaction was classified as mild, moderate and severe. Transmission of infections such as human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B, and C was monitored. RESULTS: The total number of reactions documented was 16 out of 104 (14.5%) infusions and all resolved without …

Round Spermatid Separation And In-Vitro Maturation, Hassan S. Jamal, Zouhair O. Amarin Oct 2000

Round Spermatid Separation And In-Vitro Maturation, Hassan S. Jamal, Zouhair O. Amarin

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To combine 2 methods; spermatid isolation and in-vitro maturation to improve their quality and enhance their ability of fertilization. METHODS: A discontinuous Percoll gradient was used to separate immature germ cells. Co-culture with Vero cells was attempted to convert round spermatids into more mature forms. In total 87 spermatids were studied. RESULTS: Of a final number of 77 round spermatids only 12 (15.5%) showed a certain degree of maturation in 3 out of 7 patients (42%). Of those 12 maturing spermatids, only 4 developed to an early elongated spermatid stage Sc1, but without flagella. CONCLUSION: Considering the limited in-vitro …

Personal Income Taxes And The Growth Of Small Firms, Robert Carroll, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Mark Rider, Harvey S. Rosen Oct 2000

Personal Income Taxes And The Growth Of Small Firms, Robert Carroll, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Mark Rider, Harvey S. Rosen

Center for Policy Research

This paper investigates the effect of entrepreneurs’ personal income tax situations on the growth rates of their enterprises. We analyze the personal income tax returns of a large number of sole proprietors before and after the Tax Reform Act of 1986 and determine how the substantial reductions in marginal tax rates associated with that law affected the growth of their firms as measured by gross receipts. We find that individual income taxes exert a statistically and quantitatively significant influence on firm growth rates. Raising the sole proprietor’s tax price (one minus the marginal tax rate) by 10 percent increases receipts …
