Relative Volume Of The Cerebellum In Dolphins And Comparison With Anthropoid Primates, L. Marino, James K. Rilling, Shinko K. Lin, Sam H. Ridgway Oct 2000

Relative Volume Of The Cerebellum In Dolphins And Comparison With Anthropoid Primates, L. Marino, James K. Rilling, Shinko K. Lin, Sam H. Ridgway

Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection

According to the ‘developmental constraint hypothesis’ of comparative mammalian neuroanatomy, brain growth follows predictable allometric trends. Therefore, brain structures should scale to the entire brain in the same way across mammals. Evidence for a departure from this pattern for cerebellum volume has recently been reported among the anthropoid primates. One of the mammalian groups that has been neglected in tests of the ‘developmental constraint hypothesis’ is the cetaceans (dolphins, whales, and porpoises). Because many cetaceans possess relative brain sizes in the range of primates comparative tests of the ‘developmental constraint hypothesis’ across these two groups could help to delineate the …

Experimental Foreign Exchange Markets, Eric O'N. Fisher, Frank S. Kelly Oct 2000

Experimental Foreign Exchange Markets, Eric O'N. Fisher, Frank S. Kelly

Economics

The paper analyzes experimental markets where subjects buy and sell two different assets. The assets' properties vary across treatments, and their relative price is the exchange rate. Although both assets uniformly exhibit bubbles, the exchange rate satisfies cross‐currency arbitrage. There is no evidence of a positive risk premium in these markets, and almost all subjects' forecasts of the exchange rate are rational.

Robotic System Sensitivity To Neural Network Learning Rate: Theory, Simulation, And Experiments, Christopher M. Clark, James K. Mills Oct 2000

Robotic System Sensitivity To Neural Network Learning Rate: Theory, Simulation, And Experiments, Christopher M. Clark, James K. Mills

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Selection of neural network learning rates to obtain satisfactory performance from neural network controllers is a challenging problem. To assist in the selection of learning rates, this paper investigates robotic system sensitivity to neural network (NN) learning rate. The work reported here consists of experimental and simulation results. A neural network controller module, developed for the purpose of experimental evaluation of neural network controller performance of a CRS Robotics Corporation A460 robot, allows testing of NN controllers using real-time iterative learning. The A460 is equipped with a joint position proportional, integral, and derivative (PID) controller. The neural network module supplies …

"If You Build Them Up, They Will Stay": The Role Of Recognition And Feedback On Student Retention, James R. Jones Oct 2000

"If You Build Them Up, They Will Stay": The Role Of Recognition And Feedback On Student Retention, James R. Jones

Marketing and Management Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

While such stratagems are certainly well founded, and have achieved varying degrees of success, it may be that a more fundamentally vital area of examination is being largely overlooked, namely the impact of the high school experience. One of the critical problems facing many institutions of higher learning is that of student retention. While this issue is an important one to address across the entire student population, it has become particularly acute as relates to "minority" pupils. Accordingly, many colleges and universities have developed strategies to try to arrest enrollment attrition. These strategies typically include such mechanisms as tracking programs, …

"Put Teaching On The Same Footing As Research?" Teaching And Learning Policy Review In Hong Kong And The U.S., Orlan Lee Oct 2000

"Put Teaching On The Same Footing As Research?" Teaching And Learning Policy Review In Hong Kong And The U.S., Orlan Lee

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

The Research Assessment Exercises (RAEs) in hugely expanded universities in Britain and Hong Kong attempt mammoth scale ratings of "quality of research." If peer review on that scale is feasible for "quality of research," is it less so for "quality of teaching"? The lessons of the Hong Kong Teaching and Learning Quality Process Reviews (TLQPRs), of recent studies on the influence of grade expectation and workload on student ratings, of attempts to employ agency theory both to improve teaching quality and raise student ratings, and of institutional attempts to refine the peer review process, all suggest that we can "put …

Piracy In Russia And China: A Different U.S. Reaction, Connie Neigel Oct 2000

Piracy In Russia And China: A Different U.S. Reaction, Connie Neigel

Law and Contemporary Problems

Both Russia and China refused to adopt international copyright agreements until pressured by other countries, particularly the US. The US has pursued China's copyright abuses more aggressively than it has pursued similar abuses by Russia. Neigel attempts to explain the reasons for this disparate treatment.
