The Influence Of Wave– And Zonal Mean–Ozone Feedbacks On The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, Eugene Cordero, Terrence R. Nathan Oct 2000

The Influence Of Wave– And Zonal Mean–Ozone Feedbacks On The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, Eugene Cordero, Terrence R. Nathan

Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science

The effects of wave and zonal mean ozone heating on the evolution of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) are examined using a two-dimensional mechanistic model of the equatorial stratosphere. The model atmosphere is governed by coupled equations for the zonal mean and (linear) wave fields of ozone, temperature, and wind, and is driven by specifying the amplitudes of a Kelvin wave and a Rossby–gravity wave at the lower boundary. Wave–mean flow interactions are accounted for in the model, but not wave–wave interactions.

A reference simulation (RS) of the QBO, in which ozone feedbacks are neglected, is carried out and the results …

Ap Soundbank, Larry Sheret Oct 2000

Ap Soundbank, Larry Sheret

Librarian Research

Working in conjunction with AccuWeather, the world’s largest corporate supplier of weather information and images, AP is now making its sound archive available to schools (K–12) and public and academic libraries. AccuWeather’s mission is to supply copyright-cleared sound to subscribers for educational purposes over the internet, using an interface that is easily and intuitively understood by non-news professionals. The Associated Press (AP) formed in 1848 when six daily newspapers in New York City collaborated on the installation of a telegraphic relay to transmit foreign news brought by ships docking in the harbor. AP began adding audio content to its news …

Workplace Safety Policy: Past, Present, And Future, Thomas J. Kniesner, John D. Leeth

Economics - All Scholarship

With an annual budget of about $400 million, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is about 5 percent the size of the Environmental Protection Agency, another federal agency created by President Richard M. Nixon in 1970, the "Year of the Environment." Nearly all workers in the United States come under OSHA's juridction, with some notable exceptions, including miners, transportation workers, many public employees, and people who are self-employed. OSHA is currently responsible for ptoecting over 100 million workers at 6 million work sites with the help of only about 2,000 workplace health and safety inspectors. Nevertheless, suppoers of OSHA …

Breaking Boundaries: The Connection Of Public Buildings To Public Spaces, Josh Linkov Oct 2000

Breaking Boundaries: The Connection Of Public Buildings To Public Spaces, Josh Linkov

Architecture Thesis Prep

"Traditionally, public buildings sit as monuments in a city and can be read as objects in a public space or boundaries surrounding it. There is often little interaction between the building and the site. I am proposing a new town hall located on a public plaza that will deal with connecting the building to the space it sits within. I will show how the ideas initially incorporated in New England town halls, up until the mid 1800's, can be investigated and reinterpreted to form a coherent unified system of built form and designed landscape."

Proposal For Reunification Center, Joseph Lee Oct 2000

Proposal For Reunification Center, Joseph Lee

Architecture Thesis Prep

"Providing a single space that is shared by two communities is a crucual part of a reunification process. I believe such a shared space will solve the problem between two communities by providing a threshold between two sides. Designing a reunification center for future Korea wil test this thesis by solving both intangible and tangible problems raised by the division of two communities."

Speculative Housing, Jaret Steinagle Oct 2000

Speculative Housing, Jaret Steinagle

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The purpose of this thesis is to understand architecture as a semiotic "sign system" with the ability to communicate information through form; constructing a rich, meaningful built environment. A study of the history of this language and the meaning of form within suburban contexts indicates the disassociation between the complexities of the lie of the contemporary middle class and the architecture in which they live."

Bastard Brand Civility, Mclain Clutter Oct 2000

Bastard Brand Civility, Mclain Clutter

Architecture Thesis Prep

"This investigation springs from a simultaneous interest in two parallel trends int he contemporary city:

1. The loss of the primacy of architectural and urban form in lieu of economic, market driven understandings of the city...

2. The related necessity of the city to adapt to this move towards the economic, and subsequently market itself as a commodity attractive to the consumer...

My contention, instead, is that we must embrace market forces and sell the city as a spectacle.

Time Series Analysis Of V815 Herculis Photometry Between 1984 And 1998, Lauri Jetsu, Thomas Hackman, Douglas S. Hall, Gregory W. Henry, Mariitta Kokko, J. You Oct 2000

Time Series Analysis Of V815 Herculis Photometry Between 1984 And 1998, Lauri Jetsu, Thomas Hackman, Douglas S. Hall, Gregory W. Henry, Mariitta Kokko, J. You

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

As a case study of the solar-stellar connection, we have analysed a prolonged time series of BV photometry of the chromospherically active binary V815 Her . The surface differential rotation in the rapidly rotating G5{v} primary caused changes of 4.6% in the seasonal photometric rotation periods. This would imply a differential rotation coefficient of k = 0.184, if the rotation of the starspots follows the solar law of differential rotation and the activity is confined within the same latitudinal range as in the Sun, having k = 0.189 and the spectral-type of G2{v}. Our analysis of the primary and secondary …

Two K Giants With Supermeteoritic Lithium Abundances: Hde 233517 And Hd 9746, Suchitra C. Balachandran, Francis C. Fekel, Gregory W. Henry, Han Uitenbroek

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Two unusual Li-rich K giants, HDE 233517 and HD 9746, have been studied. Optical spectroscopy and photometry have been obtained to determine the fundamental parameters of HDE 233517, a single K2 III with an extremely large infrared excess. The spectra yield Teff=4475 K, logg=2.25, [Fe/H]=-0.37, vsini=17.6 km s-1, and a non-LTE logɛ(7Li)=4.22. Photometric observations reveal low-amplitude light variability with a period of 47.9 days. Combined with other parameters, this results in a minimum radius of 16.7 Rsolar and minimum distance of 617 pc. Comparison of spectra obtained in 1994 and 1996 show profile variations in Hα and the Na D …

Social Change, Ecology And Climate In 20th-Century Greenland, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Per Lyster, Oddmund Otterstad Oct 2000

Social Change, Ecology And Climate In 20th-Century Greenland, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Per Lyster, Oddmund Otterstad

Sociology

Two great transitions, from seal hunting to cod fishing, then from cod fishing to shrimp, affected population centers of southwest Greenland during the20th century. These economic transitions reflected large-scale shifts in the underlying marine ecosystems, driven by interactions between climate and human resource use. The combination of climatic variation and fishing pressure, for example, proved fatal to west Greenland's cod fishery. We examine the history of these transitions, using data down to the level of individual municipalities. At this level, the uneven social consequences of environmental change show clearly: some places gained, while others lost. Developments in 20th-century Greenland resemble patterns …

A Descriptive Study Of The Kentucky Correctional Industries Program, Irina R. Soderstrom, Thomas C. Castellano, Heather Figaro

Kentucky Justice and Safety Research Bulletin

This bulletin addresses the topic of correctional industry programs.
