Formulation, Realization, And Demonstration Of A Process To Generate Aerodynamic Metamodels For Hypersonic Cruise Vehicle Design, Robert Mcdonald, D.N. Mavris Oct 2000

Formulation, Realization, And Demonstration Of A Process To Generate Aerodynamic Metamodels For Hypersonic Cruise Vehicle Design, Robert Mcdonald, D.N. Mavris

Aerospace Engineering

The desire to facilitate the conceptual and preliminary design of hypersonic cruise vehicles has created the need for simple, fast, versatile, and trusted aerodynamic analysis tools. Metamodels representing physics-based engineering codes provide instantaneous access to calibrated tools. Nonlinear transformations extend the capability of metamodels to accurately represent a large design space. Independence, superposition, and scaling properties of the hypersonic engineering method afford an expansive design space without traditional compounding penalties. This one-time investment results in aerodynamic and volumetric metamodels of superior quality and versatility which may be used in many forms throughout early design. As a module, they can be …

Introduction To International Perspectives On Therapeutic Jurisprudence, Part Ii, Alan Tomkins, David Carson

Alan Tomkins Publications

Therapeutic jurisprudence (TJ) is flourishing. There is a proliferation of articles being published. In addition, books are being written, and in the past several years, conferences devoted to TJ have been held. (For a listing of over 300 books and articles, see http://www.law.arizona.edu/upr-intj and follow the “Cumulative Bibliography” link.) Some recent examples: Professors Bruce Winick and David Wexler, who developed the TI concept, teamed with former University of Denver Law Dean Edward Dauer (internationally known for his work in preventive law) to edit a special issue of the journal Psychology, Public Policy, and Law on “Therapeutic Jurisprudence and Preventive Law: …

Lava And Ice Interaction At Stratovolcanoes: Use Of Characteristic Features To Determine Past Glacial Extents And Future Volcanic Hazards, David T. Lescinsky, Jonathan H. Fink Oct 2000

Lava And Ice Interaction At Stratovolcanoes: Use Of Characteristic Features To Determine Past Glacial Extents And Future Volcanic Hazards, David T. Lescinsky, Jonathan H. Fink

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Structures resulting from lava and ice interaction are common at glaciated stratovolcanoes. During summit eruptions at stratovolcanoes, meltwater is produced and travels freely down steep slopes and thin permeable valley glaciers, eroding the ice and enlarging preexisting glacial drainages. As a result, in this environment have produced few catastrophic floods. Lava flowing into the open channels and voids in the glaciers becomes confined and grows thicker, filling the available space and producing steep-sided bodies with smooth, bulbous contact surfaces. Quenching of lava against ice or by water forms small-scale features such as tensional fractures and glass. As the amount of …
