The Effects Of Influence Tactics On Performance And Supervisory Evaluations Of Subordinates, Courtney L. Determan

This study examined the effects on performance and attitudes of three different types of influence tactics including exchange, personal appeal and inspirational appeal. The sample consisted of 78 undergraduate students from the University of Northern Iowa. The researcher conducting the study gave instructions for a paper-folding task to construct miniature paper tents. The instructions were given in a manner demonstrating one of the three influence tactics. After hearing the instructions, the participants' attitudes toward the researcher were evaluated using the Supervisory Behavior Description (as cited in Robinson, Athanasiou, & Head, 1974). The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship among millennial irrationalism and the degree to which people believe they have control over the events in their lives as reflected by performance on a locus of control scale. This belief is referred to in this study as internal or external locus of control. It was hypothesized that individuals who feel that they have considerable control over the things that happen to them would express less irrationalism than those who tend to ascribe the course of their lives more to external factors. The primary purpose of this study was to compare the health practices of international students at the University of Northern Iowa before and after coming to the United States (US). Also included in the study was a description of differences in the selected health behaviors by gender, age, marital status, residence type, place of origin, and length of stay in the US. A random sample of 81 international students from about 60 different countries (35% male, 65% female) responded to a 50-item health behavior survey in the Fall semester of 1999.

In this Article, Professors Ceci and Friedman analyze psychological studies on children's suggestibility and find a broad consensus that young children are suggestible to a significant degree. Studies confirm that interviewers commonly use suggestive interviewing techniques that exacerbate this suggestibility, creating a significant risk in some forensic contexts-notably but not exclusively those of suspected child abuse-that children will make false assertions of fact. Professors Ceci and Friedman address the implications of this difficulty for the legal system and respond to Professor Lyon's criticism of this view recently articulated in the Cornell Law Review. There are several obstacles to training and supporting pediatric lawyers. Children are a relatively new group of clients and law schools have not traditionally provided pediatric training. The required training is particularly challenging to deliver because it is inherently interdisciplinary, requiring faculty and students to look outside of the law school to obtain necessary knowledge. The greatest obstacle to developing the careers of pediatric lawyers is the low pay and low prestige typically afforded children's lawyers. As a result, law students reasonably question the likelihood of developing a successful career in the field. The number of available jobs is limited …

A quarter century ago, I used the phrase "contract reader" to characterize the role an arbitrator plays in construing a collective bargaining agreement. This phrase has almost invariable been misunderstood to refer to reading or interpreting the contract. When I spoke of the "contract reader," it was in the context of judicial review of an award. My point was this: When a court has before it an arbitrator's award applying a collective bargaining agreement, it is as if the employer and the union had signed a stipulation stating: "What the arbitrator says this contract means is exactly what we meant …

This study identified noncognitive factors (via the use of discriminant analysis) that impact freshmen academic performance and retention in a community college setting. The study used a modified version of the Freshman Survey, that had been validated for use at an urban four-year institution, to determine the predictive validity of the instrument for use with first semester freshmen in a two-year college setting. Existing research suggests that cognitive factors can, at most, explain 10 to 20 percent of the variance in student retention and academic performance. This project develops an alternate mode of discourse for the pastoral counselling relationship informed by the process pastoral theology of Larry Kent Graham and the narrative therapy of Michael White. Using hermeneutical research methods it is shown that while Graham's research emphasizes a connective approach to personhood and human relationship, White's research emphasizes a narrative approach. The project begins by exploring the possibilities of developing a connective-narrative description of human relationship. The traditional description of the pastoral counselling relationship informed by the language of modern psychology is then reviewed and set in contrast to the language used by Graham and …

Root surface biomodification using low pH agents such as citric acid and tetracycline has been proposed to enhance root coverage following connective tissue grafting. The authors hypothesized that root conditioning with neutral pH edetic acid would improve vertical recession depth, root surface coverage, pocket depth, and clinical attachment levels. Twenty teeth in 10 patients with Miller class I and II recession were treated with connective tissue grafting. The experimental sites received 24% edetic acid in sterile distilled water applied to the root surface for 2 minutes before grafting. Controls were pretreated with only sterile distilled water. Beaches, and in particular sand dunes, are extremely fragile environments, easily altered by human activities. Intensive use of the beach/dune complex at Killbear Provincial Park near Parry Sound, Ontario may have led to the severe degradation of its dune system within Kilcoursie Bay. At present the dunes have been degraded back to an embryonic state, and as a result it is necessary to consider the development of management strategies before the system is completely destroyed. The primary focus is to understand the cognitive process of cartographic communication as an approach both to improvements in design and to teaching and learning of the cartographic language. A significant change occurred in the spatial pattern of Ontario’s distilling industry during the second half of the nineteenth century. Around 1850 there were approximately 150 distilleries and, by 1871, there were only 19. The industry went from numerous small, local distilleries to a few large industrial enterprizes. This industry was one of the manufacturing industries to lead the way during Canada’s industrial revolution. A knowledge of spatial and temporal patterns of sediment yields and an understanding of the factors that determine those patterns have theoretical, environmental and socio-economic significance. To assess the change in sediment yields (in both space and time) a data base of 193 river gauging sites spanning the eastern provinces of Canada and eastern United States was compiled. The original source of the data was the United States Geological Survey data base (obtained from a Hydrosphere Data Inc. cd-rom) and Environment Canada (HYDAT) data base, which included stream discharge, sediment loads and basin areas, with record lengths of one year …

This Article investigates the constitutional -basis for objections to United States participation in important international organizations like the WTO and the UN. The somewhat surprising conclusion is that the inchoate rage of the Seattle protestors has greater constitutional substance than most academic commentators would like to admit. Some international organizations have begun to acquire real powers from the federal government, and the future growth of international organizations is likely to support this trend. Moreover, the nature of these transfers raises serious constitutional doubts that the currently accepted view of constitutional interpretation cannot adequately address.

The goal of this paper is to contribute to a deeper understanding of the Unicode Bidirectional Reference Algorithm. We have provided an alternative reference algorithm written in the functional language Haskell. The advantage of Haskell is it allows for a short, clear description of a complex problem. We have run our algorithm, the two Unicode reference implementations, and four others (ICU, PGBA, FriBidi, JDK 1.2) to test for compliance with the published standard. This article considers three broad contexts within which family law is being asked to consider the consequences for families of "new facts about biogenetic relationship." 0 The law's responses to these new facts suggest that Schneider's conclusions about the biogenetic dimension of kinship must be amended in characterizations of contemporary families. In particular, the monolithic ideology" of families that Schneider assumed at mid-century 12 has been appropriated by various interests, which have misrepresented fragments of it in its entirety. There are four areas in which the Supreme Court has in effect raised the power of federalism. The first of the four is the United States v. Lopez line of cases. Lopez involved a law passed by Congress, the Gun Free School Zone Act, which said that if you possess a gun within a thousand feet of a school zone you have violated a federal law, and it is a five-year felony. However, in 1995, the Supreme Court held that the, Act exceeded Congress' power under the Commerce Clause. The Supreme Court had not told Congress that they had gone …

The landmark launch of Sputnik on October 4, 1957, and the subsequent perception that the United States trailed the Soviet Union, not only in space but also in missiles, plagued the Eisenhower Administration for the rest of the decade. The Democratic Party strategy for the 1960 presidential election included using the space race, the alleged missile gap, and declining American prestige abroad to illustrate the need for new leadership in the White House. Decoding the human genome and identifying genetic sequences may provide, among other things, for the production of individually tailored drugs, for medicines without side effects, and perhaps eventually for gene therapy that will replace dysfunctional genes with genes that preclude or cure illness." But, the same developments threaten society with the potential for devastating biological accidents, with broad invasions of individual and communal privacy, and with "genetic" bigotry and the revival of eugenic policies.

Although billable hour pressure has taken a toll on partners as well as associates, associates appear to be the most disenchanted casualties of the billable hour derby. In discussing attorney dissatisfaction, some authors have relied on the results of studies of law students and attorneys, noting that there is a limited amount of empirical data on the state of the profession. In an attempt to help fill the gap, I conducted an empirical study to gauge the effects of billable hour pressure and practices on the current crop of associates.
