I studied the breeding activity, productivity and nesting success of the Thick-billed Parrot (Rhynchopsitta pachyrhyncha) during a 3-year period 1997--1999, and also analyzed preliminary data from 1995 and 1996. I studied the Parrots in six nesting areas located in the Sierra Madre Occidental in Mexico. Data were collected on breeding areas characteristics, nest site characteristics, reproductive activity, productivity, and nesting success. Most of the historical breeding range reported in the literature was searched for nests. Two main breeding areas reported in the literature continue to be the major breeding strongholds for the species. Cebadillas and Madera accounted for 56% and …

Monolayers of 2-(6-mercaptohexan-1-oxy)aniline (AnC6SH) and 2-(7-mercaptoheptan-1-oxy)aniline (AnC7SH) on Au were synthesized and investigated by reflection-absorption infrared (RAIR) spectroscopy and electrochemistry. Electrochemical oxidation of AnC6SH/Au and AnC7SH/Au in 1 M H2SO4 to form ox-AnC6SH/Au and ox-AnC7SH/Au resulted in voltammetry indicative of oligomerization and degradation reactions of the aniline functionality. Scanning of the voltammetric potential between 0.0 and +0.9 V and then back to 0.0 V vs. SSCE twice leads to four surface-confined redox waves occurring at +0.25, +0.45, +0.5, and +0.6 V vs. SSCE. The oxidized monolayers were found to exhibit voltammetry similar to that observed for poly(o-phenetidine), which exhibits redox …

Significant resistance to malathion and resmethrin was found in insecticide-treated field populations of adult Culex quinquefasciatus , Say, compared with a laboratory and non-treated field strain. Resistance to both insecticides varied during the active control season and was associated with the frequency of insecticide application. Geographic variations in resistance levels were noted, and significant differences occurred between separate populations within the same mosquito control districts. Four model substrates were assessed for their suitability in detecting elevated esterase activity associated with malathion resistance. This study determined consumers' perception of and attitude toward American alligator leather products and evaluated factors affecting consumers' purchase intention of the products. The Fishbein and Ajzen (1975, 1980) theory of reasoned behavior served as the theoretical framework for the study. The influence of six variables on purchase intention was measured: attitude toward purchase based on product attributes, subjective norm with respect to purchase, traditional attitude toward fashion products (fashion involvement), personality traits (self-confidence and self-consciousness), price perception (price-quality schema and prestige sensitivity), and demographics. This dissertation examines Terrebonne Farms, a 1940's community in south Louisiana established by the federal government during the New Deal period. Planned by the Resettlement Administration and overseen by the Farm Security Administration, the community was one of approximately one hundred experimental towns or resettlements located around the nation. Although these resettlements varied widely in their organization, appearance, and history, few writers have chosen to focus on individual communities. This study combines recollections of original residents and local accounts of Terrebonne Farms with its government records and photographs to create a detailed and contextual description of a single resettlement. The objective of this dissertation was to investigate the processes that control litterfall and nutrient dynamics in two contrasting mangrove ecosystems at the Southeastern (SE) Everglades and Terminos Lagoon. The main objectives were: (a) to determine the spatial and temporal variability of litterfall dynamics, (b) to evaluate the relative importance of nutrient use efficiency as a nutrient conservation mechanism along a natural nutrient gradient, and (c) to assess the relative importance of nutrient resorption on litterfall dynamics. The research presented in this dissertation involves the comparison and characterization of polymeric and monomeric amino acid based surfactants for the enantiomeric separation of chiral compounds. Comparison of the performance of these two kinds of surfactants in EKC suggest that polymers are better chiral pseudostationary phases (CPSP) than the monomers for enantiomeric separation of neutral and cationic analytes, at least for the examined in this dissertation. However, the anionic enantiomers of 1,1'-binaphthyl-2-2 '-dihydrogen phosphate (BNP) were better separated using monomeric CPSPs. Field studies were conducted at two locations in Northeast Louisiana, to investigate interactions associated with the herbicide pyrithiobac and insecticide combinations in respect to weed control and insecticide efficacy and cotton response. In addition, controlled environment experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of temperature regimes and simulated thrips damage on pyrithiobac plus insecticide phytotoxicity to cotton. Pyrithiobac and insecticide combinations when compared with pyrithiobac alone did not reduce cotton leaf area, height, main stem node number, main stem nodes to first square, days to first square or flower, main stem nodes above white flower, or seedcotton yield. This exploratory study examined three instructional strategies used with female high school biology students. The relative contributions of the strategies to student understanding of microbiology and motivation in science were analyzed. The science education community targeted underachievement in science by implementing changes in content and practices (NRC, 1996). Research suggested that teachers facilitate learnirig environments based on human constructivism (Mintzes, Wandersee, & Novak, 1997) that is rooted in meaningful learning theory (Ausubel, Novak & Hanesian, 1978). This research presents new approaches to the estimation of component reliability distribution parameters from partially masked and/or censored system life data. Such data are common in continuous production environments. The methods were tested on Monte Carlo simulated data and compared to the only alternative suggested in literature. This alternative did not converge on many masked datasets. The new methods produce accurate parameter estimates, particularly at low masking levels. They show little bias. One method ignores masked data and treats them as censored observations. It works well if at least 2 known-cause failures of each component type have been observed and …

Removal of reduced manganese in aqueous systems has been described as a two-step process that incorporates a chemical or abiotic step followed by or continued with microbially mediated processes. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to describe the removal of manganese from reservoir tailwaters and partition the abiotic and microbial removal processes. Manganese removal was measured in controlled raceways and in microcosms with four sizes of substrate (cobble, 2.00 to 0.50 mm, 0.50 mm to 0.063 mm, and less than 0.063 mm). Ronald Reagan deservedly attained the moniker "The Great Communicator" due to his rhetorical prowess. This dissertation addresses an aspect, governmental scapegoating, of Reagan's rhetorical strategy. Traditional scapegoating theory claims that the scapegoat is either killed or driven from the community. However, I claim that Reagan profited by making a unique use of the scapegoat, one that was benign, the government remained essentially unscathed. The means to analyze Reagan's discourse is Kenneth Burke's cycle of guilt, victimage, redemption and rebirth. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the intention to leave teaching of teachers early in their careers and the variables: teacher self-efficacy, teacher age, school size, community type, socioeconomic background of student population, student discipline, and salary. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were employed to investigate these relationships. Survey data were collected from kindergarten through fifth grade teachers in Louisiana public schools, and interviews were conducted with those reporting the highest intention to leave. Fresh-cut sweetpotato products have potential to create new value-added market opportunities. To determine optimum film packaging and storage temperature, fresh-cut sweetpotato slices were packaged with semipermeable polyolefin films, having different gas transmission characteristics and kept at 2 or 8°C for 14 days. The films chosen, in order of increasing permeability, were Cryovac PD900, PD961, and PD941. Among the films, only PD941 film bags maintained an aerobic atmosphere during the 14 days at both temperatures. However, the high weight loss in slices with PD941 film bags will limit the use of these film bags as modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) material. PD961 …

For literacy to occur, some schools adopt reading programs provided by their local district or state, while others utilize externally developed program designs. This multiple-case qualitative inquiry examined the externally developed program, Success for All, a program designed to benefit high poverty schools, founded by Robert Slavin and Nancy Madden as well as their cohorts at Johns Hopkins University. The analytical investigation of the natural insecticide pyrethrum has been conducted. In this research, novel approaches were designed to yield either faster, or more complete separation of the active pesticidal esters in pyrethrum extracts as well as more complete conformational information of the structures of these compounds in solution. A combination of techniques was used: micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), and capillary electrochromatography (CEC). This study investigated eighty junior and senior college students' understanding of evolutionary biology concepts in lecture-only and lecture-laboratory settings. The evolution lab stressed the processes of evolution, and involved simulations, experiments, discussions, report writing, and reading. Test scores do not reveal everything about the actual process of learning in the laboratory. This study examined conceptual change patterns over a period of one semester using in-depth interviews with eight participants. The study revealed that the lecture-laboratory group performed better than the lecture-only group on certain shared items on the objective examination. The research in this dissertation has focused on the immobilization of enzymes on silica to perform digestions with DNA and RNA with subsequent analysis by capillary electrophoresis. Solid-phase DNA restriction digest reactors were developed consisting of silica particles modified with a covalently tethered restriction enzyme. This solid-phase restriction reactor enables digestion and separation of minute quantities of DNA with minimal reagent consumption. The restriction enzymes, HaeIII, PstI and HindIII, were successfully immobilized via glutaraldehyde linkages to porous silica micro-particles. Born in Korea, Isang Yun (1917--1995) became one of the most prominent avant-garde composers in the world with a distinctive musical language that synthesized Far Eastern Asian philosophy, especially Chinese Taoism, with Western techniques and Korean traditional instrumental idioms. Isang Yun left about 150 works, including five works for clarinet. Among them, this essay will discuss Yun's two Quintets for Clarinet and String Quartet: Quintet I for Clarinet and String Quartet (1984) and Quintet II for Clarinet and Sting Quartet (1994). Pesticide resistance in Louisiana mosquitoes has never been examined on a state-wide basis. In 1996, first component of this monitoring program examined selected pesticide efficacies and documented current pesticide resistance. Ground ULV-applied FyfanonRTM (96.8% malathion and Pyrocide RTM (96.8% + 1% natural pyrethrum) were applied to caged Culex quinquefasciatus adults (Denham Springs [Livingston Parish] and Lake Charles [Calcasieu Parish]) and Aedes sollicitans (Vermilion Parish). FyfanonRTM caused significantly different (p < 0.05) mortalities among each species and strain within 24hrs (95% Aedes, 48% Denham Springs, and 14% Lake Charles). Pyrocide RTM also produced significantly different mortalities (99%, 70%, and 38%, respectively). Malathion and permethrin were topically applied to 3--5 day old adult mosquitoes from 14 parishes. St. Martin parish Cx. quinquefasciatus was most susceptible to malathion (2.58 mug/mul), and the Vermilion strain was most resistant (417.05 mug/mul). Resistance is based on a ≥5-fold resistance ratio. Calcasieu parish strain was least resistant to permethrin (1.93 mug/mul), and the St. Tammany parish strain was most resistant (40.86 mug/mul). Detecting pesticide resistance by bottle bioassay technique was compared to topical bioassay. Both techniques were effective in detecting resistance for selected Aedes, Anopheles, and Culex species in Louisiana. Ground ULV 97% malathion was applied to caged Cx. quinquefasciatus adults from a mosquito abatement district, agrichemical farmland, and a susceptible colony. No significance (p > 0.05) existed in mosquito mortality between the agrichemical area and the abatement district. Recently, many models using reconfigurable optically pipelined buses have been proposed in the literature. A system with an optically pipelined bus uses optical waveguides, with unidirectional propagation and predictable delays, instead of electrical buses to transfer information among processors. These two properties enable synchronized concurrent access to an optical bus in a pipelined fashion. Combined with the abilities of the bus structure to broadcast and multicast, this architecture suits many communication-intensive applications.
