Creation And Characterization Of 25 Kda Outer Membrane Protein (Omp25) Deletion Mutants In Brucella Species., Matthew David Edmonds
Creation And Characterization Of 25 Kda Outer Membrane Protein (Omp25) Deletion Mutants In Brucella Species., Matthew David Edmonds
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The genus Brucella is composed of Gram-negative, facultative intracellular pathogens that impact man and animals. Brucella species express a 25 kDa major outer membrane protein termed Omp25. To determine the role of Omp25 in virulence, mutants were created in Brucella abortus (BA25), Brucella melitensis (BM25), and Brucella ovis (BO25) that contain disruptions in the omp25 gene (Deltaomp25 mutants). In the murine brucellosis model, each Deltaomp25 mutant was attenuated when compared to the virulent parental strain. To assess the ability of the B. abortus and B. melitensis mutants to colonize and induce abortions in the ruminant host, cattle and goats in …
Comparing Interventions On Disruptive Classroom Behaviors Derived From Descriptive Analysis, Experimental Analysis, And Reinforcer Assessment., Heather Peshak George
Comparing Interventions On Disruptive Classroom Behaviors Derived From Descriptive Analysis, Experimental Analysis, And Reinforcer Assessment., Heather Peshak George
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated whether descriptive analyses, experimental analyses, and reinforcer assessments produced similar patterns of data. Descriptive analyses were conducted to identify baseline levels of disruptive behavior and to systematically describe the co-variation between disruptive behaviors and teacher attention, peer attention, and the academic task. Data on disruptive behavior were analyzed by computing conditional probabilities associated with the preceding and maintaining stimuli (e.g., peer attention). Experimental analyses were conducted to examine the extent to which disruptive behavior was sensitive to the instructional task or to the systematically programmed consequences (e.g., teacher attention). A preference assessment was conducted to identify preferred …
Studies On The Adsorption Of Di- And Mono-Isocyanides Onto Gold And Plantinum Surfaces., Song Lin
Studies On The Adsorption Of Di- And Mono-Isocyanides Onto Gold And Plantinum Surfaces., Song Lin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The successful formation and characterization of 1,6-diisocyanohexane (DICH) molecules self assembled onto Au and Pt is realized in this dissertation. Exposure of Au substrates to methanolic solutions of DICH can result in the formation of either a monolayer or polymeric multilayer of DICH. Cyclic voltammograms of solution-phase redox probes at poly(DICH)-coated electrode surfaces (both Au and Pt) exhibit behavior that demonstrates that the poly(DICH) layers are effective transport barriers. Cross-linking of the poly(DICH) films can be increased by treating the poly(DICH) films with aqueous Ni2+ solutions; in addition, the free isocyanide functionalities in the poly(DICH) films can be electrochemically converted …

Two main breeding areas reported in the literature continue to be the major breeding strongholds for the species. Cebadillas and Madera accounted for 56% and …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Alkoxyaniline-Terminated Monomer Monolayers On Gold Surfaces., Keith Cory Schomburg
Synthesis And Characterization Of Alkoxyaniline-Terminated Monomer Monolayers On Gold Surfaces., Keith Cory Schomburg
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Monolayers of 2-(6-mercaptohexan-1-oxy)aniline (AnC6SH) and 2-(7-mercaptoheptan-1-oxy)aniline (AnC7SH) on Au were synthesized and investigated by reflection-absorption infrared (RAIR) spectroscopy and electrochemistry. Electrochemical oxidation of AnC6SH/Au and AnC7SH/Au in 1 M H2SO4 to form ox-AnC6SH/Au and ox-AnC7SH/Au resulted in voltammetry indicative of oligomerization and degradation reactions of the aniline functionality. Scanning of the voltammetric potential between 0.0 and +0.9 V and then back to 0.0 V vs. SSCE twice leads to four surface-confined redox waves occurring at +0.25, +0.45, +0.5, and +0.6 V vs. SSCE. The oxidized monolayers were found to exhibit voltammetry similar to that observed for poly(o-phenetidine), which exhibits redox …
Theoretical And Experimental Studies Of Flame -Generated Agglomerates Using Light Scattering., Guocai Shu
Theoretical And Experimental Studies Of Flame -Generated Agglomerates Using Light Scattering., Guocai Shu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Knowledge of optical properties and morphological characteristics of aggregated aerosols is important for pollution control, material synthesis through the aerosol route, oxidation of particulate matters, as well as understanding the mechanism of particulate formation and growth. However, the limitations of current light scattering theories as well as the lack of robust data inversion schemes render the complete characterization of the agglomerated structures difficult and time consuming. The objective of present work is to develop robust experimental and theoretical methods to characterize the aggregated aerosols from in-situ classical light scattering (CLS) as well as dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. In the …

Insecticide Resistance And Resistance Mechanisms In The Southern House Mosquito, Culex Quinquefasciatus., Jeffrey Dwayne Stancil
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Significant resistance to malathion and resmethrin was found in insecticide-treated field populations of adult Culex quinquefasciatus , Say, compared with a laboratory and non-treated field strain. Resistance to both insecticides varied during the active control season and was associated with the frequency of insecticide application. Geographic variations in resistance levels were noted, and significant differences occurred between separate populations within the same mosquito control districts. Four model substrates were assessed for their suitability in detecting elevated esterase activity associated with malathion resistance. Esterase activities towards all substrates were significantly higher in field stains than a laboratory strain. Esterase activities toward …

Terrebonne Farms, Louisiana: An Anthropogeographic Study Of A New Deal Resettlement., Lisa Kay Adam
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines Terrebonne Farms, a 1940's community in south Louisiana established by the federal government during the New Deal period. Planned by the Resettlement Administration and overseen by the Farm Security Administration, the community was one of approximately one hundred experimental towns or resettlements located around the nation. Although these resettlements varied widely in their organization, appearance, and history, few writers have chosen to focus on individual communities. This study combines recollections of original residents and local accounts of Terrebonne Farms with its government records and photographs to create a detailed and contextual description of a single resettlement. In …

Chiral Recognition Using Polymeric And Monomeric Amino Acid Based Surfactants., Fereshteh Haddadian Billiot
Chiral Recognition Using Polymeric And Monomeric Amino Acid Based Surfactants., Fereshteh Haddadian Billiot
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The research presented in this dissertation involves the comparison and characterization of polymeric and monomeric amino acid based surfactants for the enantiomeric separation of chiral compounds. Comparison of the performance of these two kinds of surfactants in EKC suggest that polymers are better chiral pseudostationary phases (CPSP) than the monomers for enantiomeric separation of neutral and cationic analytes, at least for the examined in this dissertation. However, the anionic enantiomers of 1,1'-binaphthyl-2-2 '-dihydrogen phosphate (BNP) were better separated using monomeric CPSPs. The depth of penetration of binaphthyl derivatives into the micellar core of chiral dipeptide surfactants (CDS) was examined using …

Female High School Biology Students' Biofilm -Focused Learning: The Contributions Of Three Instructional Strategies To Patterns In Understanding And Motivation., Jo Dale Hill Ales
Female High School Biology Students' Biofilm -Focused Learning: The Contributions Of Three Instructional Strategies To Patterns In Understanding And Motivation., Jo Dale Hill Ales
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This exploratory study examined three instructional strategies used with female high school biology students. The relative contributions of the strategies to student understanding of microbiology and motivation in science were analyzed. The science education community targeted underachievement in science by implementing changes in content and practices (NRC, 1996). Research suggested that teachers facilitate learnirig environments based on human constructivism (Mintzes, Wandersee, & Novak, 1997) that is rooted in meaningful learning theory (Ausubel, Novak & Hanesian, 1978). Teachers were advised to use both visual and verbal instructional strategies (Paivio, 1983) and encourage students to construct understandings by connecting new experiences to …
Component Reliability Estimation From Partially Masked And Censored System Life Data Under Competing Risks., Rudi Hendricus Petrus Martinus Arts
Component Reliability Estimation From Partially Masked And Censored System Life Data Under Competing Risks., Rudi Hendricus Petrus Martinus Arts
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research presents new approaches to the estimation of component reliability distribution parameters from partially masked and/or censored system life data. Such data are common in continuous production environments. The methods were tested on Monte Carlo simulated data and compared to the only alternative suggested in literature. This alternative did not converge on many masked datasets. The new methods produce accurate parameter estimates, particularly at low masking levels. They show little bias. One method ignores masked data and treats them as censored observations. It works well if at least 2 known-cause failures of each component type have been observed and …
Removal Of Manganese In Reservoir Tailwaters As A Function Of Reservoir Operations And River Substrate., Steven Lane Ashby
Removal Of Manganese In Reservoir Tailwaters As A Function Of Reservoir Operations And River Substrate., Steven Lane Ashby
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Removal of reduced manganese in aqueous systems has been described as a two-step process that incorporates a chemical or abiotic step followed by or continued with microbially mediated processes. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to describe the removal of manganese from reservoir tailwaters and partition the abiotic and microbial removal processes. Manganese removal was measured in controlled raceways and in microcosms with four sizes of substrate (cobble, 2.00 to 0.50 mm, 0.50 mm to 0.063 mm, and less than 0.063 mm). Sodium azide was used to inhibit biological uptake. An exponential decay model and a hyperbolic decay model were …
The Rhetoric Of The Benign Scapegoat: President Reagan And The Federal Government., Stephen Wayne Braden
The Rhetoric Of The Benign Scapegoat: President Reagan And The Federal Government., Stephen Wayne Braden
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Ronald Reagan deservedly attained the moniker "The Great Communicator" due to his rhetorical prowess. This dissertation addresses an aspect, governmental scapegoating, of Reagan's rhetorical strategy. Traditional scapegoating theory claims that the scapegoat is either killed or driven from the community. However, I claim that Reagan profited by making a unique use of the scapegoat, one that was benign, the government remained essentially unscathed. The means to analyze Reagan's discourse is Kenneth Burke's cycle of guilt, victimage, redemption and rebirth. Ten speeches of President Reagan are analyzed: both of his Inaugural Addresses, his Economic Recovery Speech, and his seven State of …

Synthesis Of Phosphonate And Thiophosphonate Peptide Analogs As Inhibitors Of Carboxypeptidase A., Hong Fan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Phosphonate analogs of peptides are important in biochemical research and potentially as medicinal agents because of their ability to strongly inhibit both metallo and aspartyl proteases. Although a number of phosphorus-containing molecules were reported as inhibitors for carboxypeptidase A (CPA, there have been only a few thiophosphonopeptide inhibitors reported. There has been no investigation in which the Ki values of a series of thiophosphonate inhibitors was compared to the analogous phosphonates to probe the role the sulfur atom in inhibition. The goal of this work is to prepare phosphonopeptide inhibitors of CPA and their thio-analogs so that this comparison can …
