Quantifying Groundwater-Sapping Landforms With A Hypsometric Technique, W. Luo Jan 2000

Quantifying Groundwater-Sapping Landforms With A Hypsometric Technique, W. Luo

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

The groundwater-sapping process generates peculiar landform features, including amphitheater channel head, U-shaped cross section with steep wall and flat floor, and short stubby tributaries. However, previous attempts to quantify this landform were primarily limited to the planform geometry of the channel networks and the network topology. The elevation or relief information, which is more revealing of the processes that gave rise to the landform, has not received enough attention in the literature. The hypsometric curve (area-altitude relation) combined area and relief elegantly. By treating the hypsometric curve as a probability distribution, one can quantitatively distinguish small differences in the shape …

Seasoned Equity Issuance By Closed -End Funds., William Henry Brigham Jr Jan 2000

Seasoned Equity Issuance By Closed -End Funds., William Henry Brigham Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines in detail the previously unexamined phenomenon of seasoned equity issuance by closed-end funds. Evidence presented here indicates that closed-end funds issue equity at a much higher occurrence rate than is the case for regular, operating firms in the US. Furthermore, these funds overwhelmingly use the rights offer method of equity flotation, which, outside the closed-end universe, has rarely been used in the US in recent years. The evidence produced by this study indicates that, in contrast to industrial firms, the shares of closed-end funds show no significant reaction to announcements of either rights offerings or firm commitment …

Attitudes Of Teachers Of Spanish As A Foreign Language Toward Teaching Spanish To Hispanic Students In Urban Schools., Rossana Ramirez Boyd Jan 2000

Attitudes Of Teachers Of Spanish As A Foreign Language Toward Teaching Spanish To Hispanic Students In Urban Schools., Rossana Ramirez Boyd

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Many Hispanic students do not have opportunities to develop their native language in efforts to adapt to an all English curriculum at the schools they attend. This is particularly evident among high school Hispanic students who usually possess oral fluency in Spanish but lack reading and writing skills in Spanish. The purpose of this research was to explore the attitudes of teachers of Spanish as a foreign language toward teaching Spanish to Hispanic students. This research was guided by four questions, What are the attitudes of teachers of Spanish as a foreign language toward (1) the use of Spanish? (2) …

Cancer Mortality And *Environment In Louisiana: A Geographical Inquiry., Mihye Bark Jan 2000

Cancer Mortality And *Environment In Louisiana: A Geographical Inquiry., Mihye Bark

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cancer is one of the most serious health problems in the U.S. Louisiana mortality rates for all sites of cancer have exceeded national rates since 1950. Even though concern about the issues of environmental cancer is growing, conclusive results have not been reported. Previous studies differed in data source, data quality, time of observation, and statistical procedure, making comparison of results problematic. The spatial patterns of the most common cancer sites in Louisiana (from 1953 to 1993) and their relationships with environmental factors were investigated, using GIS software and statistical software. To provide a clear understanding of how the spatial …

Solid -State Nmr Of High Spin Nuclei With Large Quadrupolar Coupling Constants., Pamela Louise Bryant Jan 2000

Solid -State Nmr Of High Spin Nuclei With Large Quadrupolar Coupling Constants., Pamela Louise Bryant

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The goal of this study is to develop a method of characterizing the aluminum sites in solid aluminum containing systems that are difficult to determine by normal nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, NMR, or X-ray crystallography. Specifically, the aim is to characterize the aluminum sites in the industrial cocatalyst methylaluminoxane, MAO. The structure of MAO, found in both solid and gel form, has not been well determined. First, an automated 27Al (spin 5/2) single-crystal NMR experiment was used to determine the experimental electric field gradient, EFG, of andalusite, a well-studied mineral with large quadrupolar interactions. The experimental results were compared to …

Agricultural Trade Liberalization And Uneven Development: The Case Of South Korea., Heesun Chung Jan 2000

Agricultural Trade Liberalization And Uneven Development: The Case Of South Korea., Heesun Chung

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which was concluded in 1993, was the principal global forum to discuss agricultural trade in an extensive way. In this last venue of the GATT, South Korean negotiators had to agree to open the nation's agricultural markets so as to assure manufacturing export access to international markets amidst heightening Pressure from surplus agricultural producers A broad range of economic studies have estimated that as an aftermath of the Uruguay Round, a majority of South Korean farmers, who are comparatively disadvantaged due to small-scale, labor-intensive farming, might be displaced. …

Gods, Men And Their Gifts: A Comparison Of The "Iliad", The "Odyssey", The "Aeneid" And "Paradise Lost", Paul Norman Anderson Jan 2000

Gods, Men And Their Gifts: A Comparison Of The "Iliad", The "Odyssey", The "Aeneid" And "Paradise Lost", Paul Norman Anderson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is an examination of the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Aeneid and Paradise Lost based upon their similar depictions of gods and men, specifically in regard to their use of gifts. The procedure is lexical and thematic in approach. The word group around which the majority of the evidence is centered is the noun 'gift' and the verb 'to give.' The nature and use of gifts is examined in the four works under consideration. However, the evidence for the notion of gift-giving is not limited by a strict positivistic approach. Evidence from the texts that clearly includes the notion …

Interaction Between Cognitive Styles And Assessment Approaches., Mehtap Cakan Jan 2000

Interaction Between Cognitive Styles And Assessment Approaches., Mehtap Cakan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study investigated the interaction of cognitive style and assessment format (multiple-choice (MC) and performance-based assessments (PBA)) in second language proficiency. The cognitive style of the students was assessed by the Group Embedded Figures Test. The study also examined study habits and attitudes of field-dependent (FD) and field-independent (FI) students toward the two assessment formats. The study utilized a sequential mixed-model design, consisting of both quantitative and qualitative methods. Phase I consisted of a quantitative …

The Influence Of Gender -Related Beliefs On Students Motor Skill Learning., Donald Gregory Scott Belcher Jan 2000

The Influence Of Gender -Related Beliefs On Students Motor Skill Learning., Donald Gregory Scott Belcher

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of beliefs about gender appropriateness and conceptions of ability on perceived and actual competence and patterns of behavior during practice of a sex typed masculine task, the hockey wrist shot. Sixty-eight undergraduate females formed four homogeneous treatment conditions based on their beliefs about gender appropriateness and conceptions of ability: Masculine Innate (MI), Masculine Acquired (MA), Neutral Innate (NI), and Neutral Acquired (NA). Four teachers taught across all of the treatment conditions for a total of 16 learning groups. Each of the learning episodes reinforced the gender appropriateness and conception of …

Optimization Of Gas Well Completion And Production Practices., John H. Mcmullan Jan 2000

Optimization Of Gas Well Completion And Production Practices., John H. Mcmullan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In water drive gas reservoirs, wells can be completed with a long perforated interval and produced at high rates to minimize abandonment pressure and maximize recovery. Alternatively, the perforations can be limited to the top of the productive interval and the well produced at a low rate in an effort to prevent coning which results in high abandonment pressures if the strength of the aquifer is adequate to support reservoir pressure. This study uses a reservoir simulation coning model to evaluate these two conflicting completion and production practices. The impact of completion interval, gas production rate, and reservoir permeability were …

Factors Influencing State And Nation Wetland Management: Building Effective Management Models., Megan Kinley Greiner La Peyre Jan 2000

Factors Influencing State And Nation Wetland Management: Building Effective Management Models., Megan Kinley Greiner La Peyre

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recognition that the interaction of people and nature is implicit in every environmental problem has increased over the last century. Yet, solutions to environmental problems are impeded by uncertainty concerning the importance of socioeconomic and political conditions in dealing with environmental issues. The development of interdisciplinary management models is necessary in order to address both the biological and social causes of environmental degradation. Protection of wetland systems varies among both nations and US. states. This variation provides a unique opportunity to explore the hypothesis that socioeconomic, political and environmental variables are critical influences on wetland protection. Structural equation modeling and …

Masked Criticism: The Whore And The Breeches Role As Articulators Of Sexual Economic Theory In The Intrigue Plays Of Aphra Behn., Mary Katherine Politz Jan 2000

Masked Criticism: The Whore And The Breeches Role As Articulators Of Sexual Economic Theory In The Intrigue Plays Of Aphra Behn., Mary Katherine Politz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Aphra Behn was an important playwright in the Restoration, second only to John Dryden in the number of plays produced during the period. In some of her early plays based on Spanish intrigue comedies, she uses the roles of whores and cross dressed women to articulate her criticism of the sexual economy within patriarchy. Masks and disguises create confusion in all the plays. Her characters, plots, structure, humor and economic concerns change with each successive play. The first play in the series, The Dutch Lover (1673) is a tale of romance where women are exchanged between men for the benefit …

"Awakenings" On Relational Ways Of Knowing: An Ecological Perspective On Curriculum., Elaine Kent Riley Jan 2000

"Awakenings" On Relational Ways Of Knowing: An Ecological Perspective On Curriculum., Elaine Kent Riley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The human species and all nonhuman forms on the planet, have co-evolved over a 14 billion-year process, yet many people operate as if planetary life existed to support and sustain human well-being alone. Separation, dualism, and power-over ways of knowing fuel a human-centered attitude which exalts our own species above the rest of the natural world. How humans will live with the earth in the next millennium (Hogan, 1996) is one of the most fundamental questions arising at the onset of the year 2000. The planet cannot sustain continued degradation of ecological systems stemming from depletion of natural resources and …

Slain In The Spirit: A Vodun Aesthetic In Selected Works Of Simone Schwarz -Bart, Zora Neale Hurston, And Paule Marshall., Maria Thecla Smith Jan 2000

Slain In The Spirit: A Vodun Aesthetic In Selected Works Of Simone Schwarz -Bart, Zora Neale Hurston, And Paule Marshall., Maria Thecla Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study, focusing on select novels by women writers of the African diaspora, discovers a surprising commonality among works with obvious geographical, cultural and linguistic differences---an affirmation of the philosophical essence of the Vodun religion as an antidote to Western spiritual and cultural moribundity. Each of the novels---Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, Simone Schwarz-Bart's Pluie et Vent sur Telumee Miracle, and Paule Marshall's Praisesong for the Widow---alludes to the Vodun pantheon, ancestor veneration and/or rituals in order to valorize the holistic Vodun worldview that recognizes the interconnectedness of all living things and the fluidity of boundaries between …

Mapping Quantitative Trait Loci Controlling The Early Height Growth Of Longleaf Pine And Slash Pine., Changren Weng Jan 2000

Mapping Quantitative Trait Loci Controlling The Early Height Growth Of Longleaf Pine And Slash Pine., Changren Weng

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The delay in early height growth (EHG) known as the "grass stage" has been one important factor that limits the artificial regeneration of longleaf pine (Pinus palstris Mill.). Genetic improvement of the "grass stage" by interspecific hybridization between longleaf pine and slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm) followed by recurrent backcrosses aiming at the introgression of genes controlling the EHG from slash pine into longleaf pine may be a solution. Developing markers tightly linked to these genes and using them in backcross breeding programs may speed the process of the introgression. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were employed to map …

Ecology Of Seagrass Fishes And Macroinvertebrates On Guatemala's Atlantic Coast., Alejandro Arrivillaga Jan 2000

Ecology Of Seagrass Fishes And Macroinvertebrates On Guatemala's Atlantic Coast., Alejandro Arrivillaga

The ecology of fishes and macroinvertebrates inhabiting shallow seagrass beds was studied at Bahia La Graciosa, located in Amatique Bay in the Caribbean coast of Guatemala. The study area included extensive turtle grass, Thalassia testudinum, meadows over muddy substrate, whereas a more exposed shoreline also supported turtle grass meadows over sandy substrates outside the bay. A total of 166 samples were collected across two seasons and habitat types in three sampling trips to the area with a cylindrical drop sampler. Diversity and abundance of fishes and macroinvertebrates inhabiting seagrass and adjacent bare-sand sites were described to assess the relative importance …

A Cultural Genealogy Of The Royal Court Theatre: The Renovation Of A Theatre And An Ideal., Stephen Douglas Berwind Jan 2000

A Cultural Genealogy Of The Royal Court Theatre: The Renovation Of A Theatre And An Ideal., Stephen Douglas Berwind

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Royal Court Theatre's current renovation invites a reexamination of the English Stage Company (ESC). The ESC has entered a crucible of change, raising new questions concerning the Royal Court's architectural semiotics and company's aesthetic mission as London's most acclaimed producer of new plays. This study seeks to understand the ways in which its identity has been shaped and consolidated over the last forty-two years and how the current chapter in ESC history redefines the company's identity and future achievement. The English Stage Company took over the Royal Court in early in 1956. The ESC's marriage with the theatre appears …

What Goes On In Cross -Language Encounters: The Tactics And Strategies Of Interactional Grammar., Stuart Lee Stewart Jan 2000

What Goes On In Cross -Language Encounters: The Tactics And Strategies Of Interactional Grammar., Stuart Lee Stewart

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This investigation involves analysis of cross-language encounters (CLEs), spoken discourse between native speakers (NSs) and non-native speakers (NNSs) of Spanish involved in two types of interactions: simulated service encounters and free conversation. I use a multi-tiered framework comprised of: (1) Schiffrin's (1994) functionalist approach, (2) a model of interactional grammar adapted from Ochs, Schegloff and Thompson (1996), and (3) one of the principal assumptions from conversation analysis, which focuses on the organization of interaction, while maintaining that participants' behavior provides evidence for the units, patterns and rules that are a part of all spoken interaction. Tactics and strategies examined include …

Politics, Religion, And The First Amendment, Mark W. Cordes Jan 2000

Politics, Religion, And The First Amendment, Mark W. Cordes

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

This article examines some of the lesser-studied constitutional issues surrounding the religion-in-politics debate. Part I of the article examines the perceived relation of religion and politics at the nation's founding, focusing on two issues: 1) the role religion played in America's political vision at the time, and 2) the nature of church-state separation anticipated by the First Amendment. Part I does not attempt to resolve the numerous questions revolving around both of these issues, but rather simply examines the issue of religion and politics. On such a basis, this article argues that religion, though not the dominant vision, was certainly …

Unemployment Compensation And Older Workers, Christopher J. O'Leary, Stephen A. Wandner Jan 2000

Unemployment Compensation And Older Workers, Christopher J. O'Leary, Stephen A. Wandner

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

Unemployment compensation in the United States is provided through a federal-state system of unemployment insurance (UI). UI provides temporary partial wage replacement to active job seekers who are involuntarily out of work. For older workers, UI is an important source of income security and a potential influence on work incentives. For many, the transition from full-time work in a career job to retirement is voluntary and orderly. For others, job displacement greatly disrupts plans. The transition often involves many intermediate steps. The chain of transitions may include full- or part-time work on another job which most often is not in …

Alternative Measures Of State Ui Systems, Christopher J. O'Leary, Robert Tannenwald, Wei-Jang Huang, Pei Zhu Jan 2000

Alternative Measures Of State Ui Systems, Christopher J. O'Leary, Robert Tannenwald, Wei-Jang Huang, Pei Zhu

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

Comparisons among state unemployment insurance (UI) systems can be misleading. Frequently quoted indicators of benefit generosity, tax cost, and adherence to the experience-rating principle are influenced by the relative economic conditions of states. Such comparisons thereby obscure underlying structural differences in state UI systems. A business considering alternative states in which to locate a production facility should be cautious when interpreting UI information in an economic developer's marketing pitch. This paper offers alternative indicators based on how representative firms, with a well specified unemployment experience, would fare in different states. The authors use a micro-simulation approach to model the experiences …

Tomographic Inversion For Sediment Parameters In Shallow Water, Gopu R. Potty, James H. Miller, James F. Lynch, Kevin B. Smith Jan 2000

Tomographic Inversion For Sediment Parameters In Shallow Water, Gopu R. Potty, James H. Miller, James F. Lynch, Kevin B. Smith

Ocean Engineering Faculty Publications

This article discusses inversions for bottom geoacoustic properties using broadband acoustic signals obtained from explosive sources. The experimental data used for the inversions are SUS charge explosions acquired on a vertical hydrophone array during the Shelf Break Primer Experiment conducted south of New England in the Middle Atlantic Bight in August 1996. The SUS signals were analyzed for their time-frequency behavior using wavelets. The group speed dispersion curves were obtained from the wavelet scalogram of the SUS signals. A genetic algorithm (GA) was used for the inversion of sound speeds in the water column and compressional wave speeds in the …
