Beyond The Dipole Approximation: Angular-Distribution Effects In The 1s Photoemission From Small Molecules, Dennis W. Lindle, Oliver Hemmers, H. Wang, P. Focke, I. A. Sellin, J. D. Mills, J. A. Sheehy, P. W. Langhoff

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Over the past two decades, the dipole approximation has facilitated a basic understanding of the photoionization process in atoms and molecules. Recent experiments on the 1s inner shells of small molecules at relatively low photon energies (⩽ 1000 eV) show strong nondipole effects. They are significant and measurable at energies close to threshold, in conflict with a common assumption that the dipole approximation is valid for photon energies below 1 keV.

The Virtues Of Command And Control Regulation: Barring Exotic Species From Aquatic Ecosystems, Sandra B. Zellmer Jan 2000

The Virtues Of Command And Control Regulation: Barring Exotic Species From Aquatic Ecosystems, Sandra B. Zellmer

Faculty Law Review Articles

The Clean Water Act asserts the ambitious goal of eliminating water pollution and protecting the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of U.S. waters. Yet the EPA, in enforcing the Act, currently exempts from regulation a significant source of pollution in U.S. waters: ballast-water discharges from commercial shipping vessels. Ballast water from commercial vessels is a primary vector for the introduction of exotic plant and animal species into U.S. waters. The invasion of these species poses an increasing threat to native biodiversity; the invaders prey directly on native fish and wildlife, compete for food and habitat, and introduce disease and parasites …

Spin And Charge Response To Magnetic Frustration In The Hubbard Model, Yang Liu Jan 2000

Spin And Charge Response To Magnetic Frustration In The Hubbard Model, Yang Liu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Unusual normal-state properties of strongly correlated electron materials have been discovered in recent years. They can not be explained by traditional theories. Much work has been devoted to exploring the physical insight into these properties. In the dissertation, the study of spin and charge response to magnetic frustration in the Hubbard Model is presented. Using exact diagonalization techniques, the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a two-dimensional Hubbard model applied to a cluster with periodic boundary conditions have been obtained. Static and dynamic spin and charge correlation functions as well as one-particle excitation spectra have been calculated. The effects of magnetic frustration …

A Case Study Of The Information Environment For School Leadership Preparation Project, R. Karlene Mccormick-Lee Jan 2000

A Case Study Of The Information Environment For School Leadership Preparation Project, R. Karlene Mccormick-Lee

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (1996) noted that the social fabric of schools is changing. School administrators are faced with new challenges, provided new opportunities to implement reform, and required to learn new technology skills (Means, Olsen, & Singh, 1995; Streifer, 1999). Potentially universities play an invaluable role in preparing educators to use technology effectively. However, studies suggest that universities are far from realizing that potential (O'Flahavan, 1988; Lemke, 1999; Roblyer & Erlanger, 1999). A nation-wide survey found that the integration of instructional technology across disciplines and the use of technology to solve real-world problems were the most important …

A Descriptive Study Of Enrollment Marketing Strategies For Four -Year Public Colleges And Universities, Becky Lynn Watson Jan 2000

A Descriptive Study Of Enrollment Marketing Strategies For Four -Year Public Colleges And Universities, Becky Lynn Watson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Choosing a college education is only one of many choices a student has for post-secondary education or training. The current change in the university campus environment is creating a change in the marketing environment. A higher education institution must continually adapt its marketing efforts to keep pace with the changing needs of its constituency---the students. The institution must know its public and its market to be able to attract adequate resources and convert them into services for its public. The nature and function of higher educational institutions is changing due to changes in the attitudes of the consumer. Higher education …

Frustrated Spin -1/2 Two-Leg And Three-Leg Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Ladders, Ningsheng Zhu Jan 2000

Frustrated Spin -1/2 Two-Leg And Three-Leg Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Ladders, Ningsheng Zhu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The goal of this project is to study the ground-state properties of frustrated spin-1/2 two- and three-leg Heisenberg ladders, and to investigate possible effects of diagonal couplings on spin gaps. The ground-state and the first-excited-state energies of these two systems are calculated systematically by using the density matrix renormalization group method. The ground state phase diagrams for these two systems are obtained. For the frustrated two-leg ladder, we found that the spin gap is insensitive to the change of the FM diagonal coupling constant. This is in agreement with experimental suggestions. For the frustrated three-leg ladder, we conclusively proved that …

Design Of A Fuzzy Logic Controller For Swing-Damped Transport Of An Overhead Crane Payload, Michael James Nalley Jan 2000

Design Of A Fuzzy Logic Controller For Swing-Damped Transport Of An Overhead Crane Payload, Michael James Nalley

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Transportation using overhead cranes can excite undesirable payload swinging. These oscillations have to be damped before other payload manipulation is done. A swing-damped motion profile based on the natural frequency of the payload is used to minimize swing excitation. In addition, a fuzzy logic controller is used to move the overhead crane along a desired path while ensuring that the payload is swing-free at the end of the motion. The control action is divided between displacement and swing controllers to simplify controller tuning for optimal performance. Examples, along with comparisons with a PD controller, are included, as well as related …

From Hiroshima To Three-Mile-Island: Three Decades Of Nuclear Power Opposition Rhetoric In The United States, Theodore Erik Olds Jan 2000

From Hiroshima To Three-Mile-Island: Three Decades Of Nuclear Power Opposition Rhetoric In The United States, Theodore Erik Olds

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Rhetoric associated with the development of nuclear power in the United States was analyzed over 3-decades in order to better understand the beginnings and constituents of the rhetoric associated with anti-nuclear power perspectives. An amalgamation of existing historical/rhetorical methods utilized by Gamson and Modigliani (1989) and Darsey (1991) were employed. Progressive interpretive anti-nuclear rhetorical packages were identified for corresponding historical periods within the 34-year period. Historical periods were segmented by catalytic events, or incidents important to nuclear power development which also presented opportunities for anti-nuclear power rhetoric. The analysis reveals four individual rhetorical packages: (1) Pandora's Box; (2) Mirage; (3) …

An Augustinian Analysis Of The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, Jon Mcclendon White Jan 2000

An Augustinian Analysis Of The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, Jon Mcclendon White

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Applying the Christian principles of depraved human nature, expectation of detrimental behavior from irrational actors, and rational attempts to limit the destructiveness of war, Augustine would conclude that the declared nuclear weapons states have a moral obligation to prevent proliferation of nuclear weapons. Laws suitable to the needs of the times are the appropriate method for accomplishing this. The pending Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) is one such law. Because the CTBT bans all nuclear explosions and establishes an intrusive inspection scheme, it will have an impact on the U. S. Department of Energy (DoE). DoE should respond by participating …

Density Functional Calculations Of Rubidium Under Pressure, Anthony Jon Zukaitis Jan 2000

Density Functional Calculations Of Rubidium Under Pressure, Anthony Jon Zukaitis

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

With developments in X-ray diffractometry, experimentalists have been able to resolve the complex structures that had eluded them in the past. One area of this interest is in the regime of alkali metals under pressure. For years, the alkali metals have been viewed as simple systems whose properties can be understood with fairly simple ideas. Under pressure, things get interesting and one observes complex crystal structures in all of the alkali metals under high enough pressure. What is more interesting is that there appears to be many similarities in the phase diagrams of the alkali metals. This hints that this …
