A Study Of The Relationship Between Company Performance And Ceo Compensation Jan 2000

A Study Of The Relationship Between Company Performance And Ceo Compensation

American Business Review

According to Agency Theory, an agency problem exists when an agent, such as a CEO has established an agenda which conflicts with the interest of the stockholders. Agency problems are most likely to occur when an executive has no financial interest in the outcomes of the decisions made. Therefore, one way to avoid agency problems would be to reward executives on the basis of financial returns to shareholders. However, with the growing salaries of executives, stockholders seem to be more convinced than ever that there is no connection between executive pay and corporate performance. The relationship between performance and CEO …

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was the wake-up call that disturbed America from its mid-twentieth century slumber concerning the dangers of communicable diseases. Until AIDS was identified in 1981, most Americans felt largely impervious to health threats posed by viruses or bacteria. Polio, smallpox, and tuberculosis had been brought under control by the "magic bullets" of antibiotics and vaccines." We felt more susceptible to the ravages of cancer or the debilitation of heart disease. But, over the last twenty years, the (re)emergence of serious or life-threatening microbial- based conditions such as Ebola, hantavirus, Lyme disease, West Nile virus, and even …

The Economics Of Recycling And Remanufacturing, Edgardo N. Bolinao Jan 2000

The Economics Of Recycling And Remanufacturing, Edgardo N. Bolinao

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Scarcity is the basis of our current way of life and why capitalism is arguably the most efficient way to allocate resources. At the most basic level, the field of economics is predicated on the principle of scarcity. With the Earth's limited resources, everyone must make the best use of what he has, the basic tenet of the Japanese efficient allocation of scarce resources-people, time, money (NPV, IRR), etc. The good news is that there is something that every individual can do to help "re-purpose" the resources, and that is: RECYCLE!

Issues And Insights On The Interindustry Structure Of The Philippine And Mindanao Economy: 1979 And 1990, Cristela Goce-Dakila

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study is an attempt to explain differences in production structure at the regional and national levels. Differences in factor endowments, technological capacity, scale of production across industries are some reasons that the production structure may be different at the regional and national levels. It aims to (1) provide some theoretical understanding of space-time development of interindustry structure; (2) describe interindustry structure at the regional and national level across different points in time; and (3) identify industries with high local linkages so that appropriate infrastructure and industrial complementation requirements may be instituted.

The Relationship Of Filipino Entrepreneurial Styles And Firm Performance In Small And Medium Manufacturing Firms In Metro Manila, Gloria S. Chavez

DLSU Business & Economics Review

A major factor in the growth of economies is the presence of a large number of entrepreneurs who have started small and medium enterprises. In an era of liberalization and globalization, small and medium entrepreneurs are facing stiff competition. Will the Filipino entrepreneur be able to withstand the pressure of competition brought about by the entry of foreign products? Is he ready to venture into foreign markets? It is imperative that the quality of Filipino entrepreneur be enhanced for him to respond to the challenges ahead of him.

Forecasting In Business Research Using The Arima Box-Jenkins Methodology, Milagros F. Malaya Jan 2000

Forecasting In Business Research Using The Arima Box-Jenkins Methodology, Milagros F. Malaya

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Over the years, several techniques have been developed to deal with diverse forecasting situations, falling broadly into quantitative and qualitative (or technological) techniques. Qualitative methods are basically subjective and judgmental inputs of experts in the field. These are considered to be most appropriate when historical data and/or scientific expertise are not available. In some cases, they may even be preferred, as in very long-range forecasting.

Determination Of Nizatidine-Guest Complexation Constants And Computer Aided Molecular Design, Carolyn J. Mordas Jan 2000

Determination Of Nizatidine-Guest Complexation Constants And Computer Aided Molecular Design, Carolyn J. Mordas

Honors Theses

Nizatidine, N-[2-[[[2-[(dimethylamino)methyl]-4-thiazoly]]methy1]thio]ethyl]-N'- methyl- 2-nitro-I,l, ethenediamine, has been investigated for its potential to act as a host to small molecules through hydrogen bonding and pi-pi interactions. In previous work, pyridoxine (vitamin B6) was hypothesized to have a high guest-host binding constant with nizatidine. This was supported through experimental methods involving one and two dimensional NMR spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, and high performance liquid chromatography. Computer aided molecular design and three dimensional conformationally flexible database searching led to the discovery of other possible guests, including albuterol, which has exhibited even higher binding constants from HPLC.

Characterization Of The Earth's Surface And Atmosphere For Multispectral And Hyperspectral Thermal Imagery, Erich Hernandez-Baquero Jan 2000

Characterization Of The Earth's Surface And Atmosphere For Multispectral And Hyperspectral Thermal Imagery, Erich Hernandez-Baquero

Theses

The goal of this research was to develop a new approach to solve the inverse problem of thermal remote sensing of the Earth. This problem falls under a large class of inverse problems that are ill-conditioned because there are many more unknowns than observations. The approach is based on a multivariate analysis technique known as Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA). By collecting two ensembles of observations, it is possible to find the latent dimensionality where the data are maximally correlated. This produces a reduced and orthogonal space where the problem is not ill-conditioned. In this research, CCA was used to extract …

Numerical Ode Solvers That Preserve First Integrals, Thuya Aung Jan 2000

Numerical Ode Solvers That Preserve First Integrals, Thuya Aung

Theses

The measurement of the change in energy by a force from a dynamical action is central for study of modern dynamical mechanics. By analyzing energy along with variational calculus, the disciplines of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamics have emerged. This thesis describes these systems, and discusses numerical solutions to a system of equations by Lagrangian, Hamiltonian, and First Integral solutions.

Coattail Class Actions: Reflections On Microsoft, Tobacco, And The Mixing Of Public And Private Lawyering In Mass Litigation , Howard M. Erichson

Faculty Scholarship

Ask anyone who follows legal news to name the two biggest litigation news stories in the United States at the start of the twenty-first century, and they will answer without blinking: Microsoft and tobacco. The Microsoft litigation, they will tell you, claims a place in the pantheon of antitrust landmarks that includes Standard Oil, Alcoa, and AT&T. The tobacco litigation is the most massive in a string of mass torts including asbestos, Dalkon Shield, and breast implants; it is arguably the most important public health matter ever litigated. Microsoft and tobacco each fit so well and so interestingly in their …
