Blood Glucose Estimation Accuracy In Children With Diabetes: An Investigation Of Repeated Practice With Latent Growth Curve Modeling, Julie Ann Wagner Jan 2000

Blood Glucose Estimation Accuracy In Children With Diabetes: An Investigation Of Repeated Practice With Latent Growth Curve Modeling, Julie Ann Wagner

Open Access Dissertations

Blood glucose (BG) estimation is an important part of maintaining euglycemia in individuals with diabetes. Interventions to increase accuracy were designed without taking into account the natural effects of practice. The current study investigated the effects of naturalistic practice on BG estimation accuracy. Latent growth curve modeling (LGCM) was used to analyze data from 43 children with insulin dependent diabetes. LGCM consists of two stages. In the first stage, a growth curve was fit to the repeated measures of each individual in the sample. Results indicated that the true growth trajectory was curvilinear, and best represented by a quadratic function. …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Conducting Polymer-Inorganic Composite Materials, Kaiguo Chang Jan 2000

Synthesis And Characterization Of Conducting Polymer-Inorganic Composite Materials, Kaiguo Chang

Open Access Dissertations

In the aircraft industry, the chromate conversion coatings are the current choice for corrosion protection of aluminum alloys. However, due to their highly poisonous nature, especially the potential carcinogenic effect, the EPA has passed regulations in 1998 calling for the eventual replacement of these coatings. Various replacement coatings systems are being actively explored. So far, nothing has been found with the matching performance of corrosion protection of Alodine 600 and 1200 industry chromate conversion coatings. Conducting polymers, especially the water-based PAN/PAA copolymer, as evidenced by our previous research, has the potential to perform as well as the chromate conversion coatings …

Elimination Of The Hindsight Bias In Individual Versus Group Decision Making, Holly Anne Sindelar Jan 2000

Elimination Of The Hindsight Bias In Individual Versus Group Decision Making, Holly Anne Sindelar

Open Access Dissertations

The hindsight bias refers to the tendency of people, after an event, to overestimate how accurately they would have predicted the outcome had they been asked in advance. The consequences of the hindsight bias on clinical decision making are significant. The bias is believed to impede one's ability to learn from experience and to lead to an undue level of confidence in future decision making. Research has shown that, under some conditions, groups have been shown to be less susceptible to bias than individual decision makers. The hindsight bias also has been found to be attenuated under certain conditions involving …

Respiration And Heart Rate At The Surface Between Dives In Northern Elephant Seals, Burney J. Le Boeuf, Daniel E. E. Crocker, Jason Gedamke, J. Grayson, Paul M. Webb, Susanna B. Blackwell, Daniel P. Costa Jan 2000

Respiration And Heart Rate At The Surface Between Dives In Northern Elephant Seals, Burney J. Le Boeuf, Daniel E. E. Crocker, Jason Gedamke, J. Grayson, Paul M. Webb, Susanna B. Blackwell, Daniel P. Costa

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

All underwater activities of diving mammals are constrained by the need for surface gas exchange. Our aim was to measure respiratory rate (fb) and heart rate (fh) at the surface between dives in free-ranging northern elephant seals Mirounga angustirostris. We recorded fb and fh acoustically in six translocated juveniles, 1.8-2. 4 years old, and three migrating adult males from the rookery at Ano Nuevo, California, USA. To each seal, we attached a diving instrument to record the diving pattern, a satellite tag to track movements and location, a digital audio tape recorder or acoustic datalogger with an external hydrophone to …

School Choice, The First Amendment, And Social Justice, Nicole Stelle Garnett, Richard W. Garnett Jan 2000

School Choice, The First Amendment, And Social Justice, Nicole Stelle Garnett, Richard W. Garnett

Journal Articles

This Article is intended to be a primer on the legality and morality of educational choice—"School Choice in a Nutshell," if you will. We are resigned to being pre-empted by the tireless work of grassroots activists, the choices of voters, and the decisions of judges. Still, we hope, in somewhat polemical fashion, to establish two basic claims. First, school choice, properly understood, is constitutional. And second, school choice is both sensible and just.

In the end, we believe "school choice . . . is essential to achieving equality of opportunity for American children, rich or poor. School choice treats the …

International Perspective, Douglass Cassel Jan 2000

International Perspective, Douglass Cassel

Journal Articles

I don't think it's accurate to say this panel has six experts on incarceration. I think we really have five experts and one dilettante. I know a bit about international human rights law. I am not an expert on prisons and I am overwhelmed by the expertise and the statistics that we've just received and about which I hope to learn a great deal more. So I apologize to you in advance for supplying nothing more than impressions of the international realities of incarceration. I will then skip quickly ahead to the law.

Natural Law, Marriage, And The Thought Of Karol Wojtyla, John J. Coughlin Jan 2000

Natural Law, Marriage, And The Thought Of Karol Wojtyla, John J. Coughlin

Journal Articles

This Article examines the loss of the natural law perspective from legal theory and the movement towards liberal theory. The Article continues by analyzing two features of the natural law tradition as described in the philosophical writings of Karol Wojtyla. The first feature concerns marriage and family as the fundamental human community. The second considers marriage as a virtuous relationship. The Article concludes with practical suggestions for the legal profession and legal education with regard to counseling clients about marriage.

Education Reform At The Crossroads: Politics, The Constitution, And The Battle Over School Choice, Richard W. Garnett Jan 2000

Education Reform At The Crossroads: Politics, The Constitution, And The Battle Over School Choice, Richard W. Garnett

Journal Articles

The "Education Reform at the Crossroads" Conference's four panels tackled the education-reform and school-choice questions from a variety of perspectives—one panel, led by Cleveland's indefatigable councilwoman and education revolutionary Ms. Fannie Lewis, explored the history and increasingly visible politics of the school-choice debate—in particular, the marked increase in support for school choice among African Americans"—while another group focused on the constitutionality of including religious schools in voucher programs and on the historical connection between anti-Catholic nativism and the common-school movement. A third panel discussed framing school-choice as a "civil rights issue" and the fourth—which included political scientist and education researcher …

The Primacy Of Political Actors In Accommodation Of Religion, William K. Kelley Jan 2000

The Primacy Of Political Actors In Accommodation Of Religion, William K. Kelley

Journal Articles

This article focuses on the relationship between freedom of religion and the norm against non-establishment of religion in the context of government efforts to accommodate religious practices. It analyzes First Amendment doctrine in this area, and concludes that the Supreme Court has consistently been generous in permitting accommodations of religion when they are the product of judicial decisions; in other words, at least until recently the Court has been open to mandatory accommodations so long as they are ordered by judges. By contrast, the Court has long been suspicious of - and far from generous in permitting - accommodations as …

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Emissions from household stoves, especially those using solid fuels, can contribute significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and have adverse health impacts. Few data are available on emissions from the numerous types of cookstoves used in developing countries. We have systematically measured emissions from 56 fuel/stove combinations in India and China, a large fraction of the combinations in use world-wide. A database was generated containing emission factors of direct and indirect GHGs and other airborne pollutants such as CO2, CO, CH4, TNMHC, N2O, SO2, NOx, TSP, etc. In this paper, we report on the 28 fuel/stove combinations tested …

Wireless Communications In The New Millennium And Third Generation Wireless Networks, Oz Yakuphanogullarindan

Theses

At the end of the 20 century, and at the beginning of this one, wireless communications are making large advances. The new technologies are on the way to provide a high-speed, high-quality information exchange between handheld terminals, and information repositories. The so called 2,5 generation networks, using the techniques like the HSCSD1, GPRS2, EDGE3, and the 3r generation wireless systems will help the wireless world to reach those goals. In this thesis I will start from the first and second-generation wireless networks, and then look into the 2,5 generation and 3rd generation wireless communications more in detail. The latest advances …

Communication And Freedom: An Althusserian Reading Of Media-Government Relations, Bonnie Brennen Jan 2000

Communication And Freedom: An Althusserian Reading Of Media-Government Relations, Bonnie Brennen

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This essay draws on the work of French philosopher Louis Althusser, particularly his contributions to the development of ideology, in an assessment of the relationship between communication ana freedom. Althusser's understanding of freedom as an ideological creation not only privileges the role of ideology in the construction of social relationships, but also calls into question the complex interplay between media, society, and freedom. The current billion-dollar anti-drug public service announcement deal is interrogated in an effort to illustrate how the United States government has been inserting ideologically driven propaganda into prime time television shows with the full co-operation and approval …

Studies Directed At The Synthesis Of Trialkoxysilyl Substituted Nlo Chromophores, Ida J. Kuhr Jan 2000

Studies Directed At The Synthesis Of Trialkoxysilyl Substituted Nlo Chromophores, Ida J. Kuhr

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The synthesis of trialkoxyalkyl substituted NLO chromophores has been investigated. The chromophore 2-(7-(3-hydroxydiphenylamino)-9,9-diethyl-2-fluorenyl)-benzothiazole was prepared by a five step process. Bromination of fluorene yielded 2,7-dibromo-fluorene which could be converted to 2,7-dibromo-9,9-diethylfluorene by alkylation with ethyl iodide in DMSO.Reaction of 2,7-dibromo-9,9-diethylfluorene with one equivalent of butyl lithium followed by reaction with DMF provides 2-bromo-7-formyl-9,9-diethylfluorene. Condensation of 2-bromo-7-formyl-9,9-diethylfluorene and 2-aminobenzenethiol in DMSO results in the formation of 2-(7-bromo-9,9-diethyl-2-fluorenyl)benzothiazole. The conversion of 3-hydroxydiphenylamine to 3-benzyloxy-diphenylamine was accomplished with benzyl bromide and potassium carbonate in DMF. A palladium catalyzed coupling of 3-benzyloxydiphenylamine and 2-(7-bromo-9,9-diethyl-2-fluorenyl)benzothiazole provided 2-(7-(3-hydroxydiphenyl-amino)-9,9-diethyl-2-fluorenyl)benzothiazole. Several attempts to alkylate 2-(7-(3-hydroxydiphenylamino)-9,9-diethyl-2-fluorenyl)benzothiazole with trimethoxysilylmethyl chloride …
