Elongated Chambers For Field Studies Across Atmospheric Co2 Gradients, H. B. Johnson, H. W. Polley, R. P. Whitis
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
We describe a field facility that controls CO2 along continuous gradients from superambient to subambient concentrations. The facility consists of two transparent, tunnel-shaped chambers, each 1-m wide and tall and 60-m long. Pure CO2 is injected into one chamber during daylight to initiate a superambient CO2 gradient (550–350 µmol mol–1). Ambient air is introduced to the second chamber to initiate a subambient CO2 gradient (350–200 µmol mol–1). CO2 concentrations at night are regulated at 150 µmol mol–1 above daytime values along each gradient. The CO2 gradients are maintained by …

Two Takeovers In Wild Hamadryas Baboons, Larissa Swedell
Two Takeovers In Wild Hamadryas Baboons, Larissa Swedell
Publications and Research
Hamadryas baboons exhibit a multi-level social structure in which several one-male units, each consisting of a ‘leader’ male and one or more females, comprise a band’ and two or more bands comprise a troop. Cohesion of each one-male unit is maintained by aggressive herding by its leader male [1]. Here I describe the consequences of 2 takeovers in a band of wild hamadryas baboons. I report evidence of infant mortality following takeovers, changes in female reproductive condition within 2 weeks after takeovers, and the reacquisition of a female by a deposed leader male, none of which has been previously reported …

Modern traffic control systems are complex entities whose performance should be thoroughly quantified prior to deployment. However, many of the advanced features available with this control equipment, such as preemption and real-time control strategies, are typically proprietary in nature, and therefore not incorporated into standard simulation models. Since it is not desirable for the engineer to learn in a field environment, under live traffic conditions, this research presents a rational procedure for evaluating and validating such control strategies in a laboratory setting. This document explores three aspects of traffic signal systems, which include the advanced control settings for single controller …

Evaluation Of Lightweight Non-Contact Profilers, Amit Mondal, Adam J. Hand, David R. Ward
JTRP Technical Reports
Pavement smoothness was recently identified as the most significant factor the motoring public uses to judge the quality of our Nations roadways. A new generation of lightweight profilers has recently been developed, which have the potential of providing nearly instantaneous smoothness measurements, providing contractors with a tool to identify and address process control issues promptly and cost effectively. The new technology was co-operatively evaluated by a team of Purdue University and Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) researchers to assess the repeatability and reproducibility of the devices, as well as the potential for their use in Indiana. A successful field test …
Optimal Design Of Freeway Incident Response Systems, Raktim Pal, Kumares C. Sinha
Optimal Design Of Freeway Incident Response Systems, Raktim Pal, Kumares C. Sinha
JTRP Technical Reports
Several states have introduced service patrol programs to curb the growing adverse impacts of freeway incidents. An efficient patrol program configuration design is needed to ensure appropriate resource allocation. This research seeks to devise a scheme for determining optimally such system characteristics as hours of operation, fleet and crew sizes, dispatching policies, areas of operation, and routing patterns, so that the efficacy of the program is maximized. The interaction of randomly occurring incidents with time-varying traffic adds to the complexity of the problem. The problem is solved using dynamic simulation approaches combined with optimization techniques to incorporate the non-linear impact …

Performance Of Bridge Decks And Girders With Lightweight Aggregate Concrete, J. A. Ramirez, J. Olek, Eric Joseph Rolle, Brian J. Manlone
JTRP Technical Reports
Structural lightweight concrete is a very versatile material and Haydite and Minergy lightweight aggregates can be utilized in the mixture development of concrete for use in girders and decks in bridges. More widespread use of lightweight aggregates (LWA) would result in savings in construction cost due to considerable dead load reduction. The materials phase of this research study evaluated the fresh concrete properties (slump, unit weight, and air content), the mechanical properties of hardened concrete (compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, static and dynamic modulus of elasticity, Poisson’s Ratio, and temperature development), and durability related parameters (air void distribution, freeze-thaw …

Providing Real-Time Traffic Advisory And Route Guidance To Manage Borman Incidents On-Line Using The Hoosier Helper Program, Srinivas Peeta, Jorge L. Ramos, Shyam Gedela
JTRP Technical Reports
This study addresses the issue of whether the message content of variable message signs (VMS) can be used as a control variable to favorably influence traffic conditions in real-time. The focus is on the level of detail of information displayed on the VMS, and not human factor issues. It implies an understanding of driver sensitivity to information content. Also, for real-time implementation, the displayed information should be consistent, timely, and reliable. A framework is developed for optimizing system performance under incidents using the VMS message content as the primary control parameter. It consists of: (i) an efficient control strategy to …
The Development Of A Speed Monitoring Program For Indiana, Darren L. Jorgenson, Kumares C. Sinha
The Development Of A Speed Monitoring Program For Indiana, Darren L. Jorgenson, Kumares C. Sinha
JTRP Technical Reports
From the passage of the National Maximum Speed Limit (NMSL) of 55 mph in 1974 through its repeal in 1995 speed monitoring programs have been mandated by the federal government. The speed-monitoring program was primarily intended to provide reliable data to be included as a part of the State’s annual certification in order to be approved for Federal Aid highway projects. The repeal of the NMSL in 1995 not only authorized states to set their own speed limits, it also allowed states to develop their own speed monitoring programs. The goal of this research is to provide the framework for …
Air Traffic Control Cti Program, Cathy Schattenberg
Air Traffic Control Cti Program, Cathy Schattenberg
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
In order to broaden the employment opportunities in the aviation industry for graduates and to develop a more educated work force in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Collegiate Training Initiative (CTI) program was implemented in October 1997. Thls program was tested for over five years in post-secondary educational institutes. The CTI program focuses on the graduate having a broad-based knowledge of the air traffic management system, FAA, aviation industry, and principal topics covered in many existing aviation degree programs (FAA, 1997). Graduates of the program are required to attend the FAA Academy to successfully complete the skills and equipment …
Aviation Students In Industry: Strategies That Enhance Learning, Michael Leasure, David Stanley
Aviation Students In Industry: Strategies That Enhance Learning, Michael Leasure, David Stanley
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
It is important that the graduates of aviation training schools possess both academic training and practical experience. Academic training is often the most convenient to provide in that a classroom, a lab facility, an instructor, and samples of the parts and equipment related to the learning objectives are all that is required. It is a structured and accepted process that continues under the watchkl eye of the Federal Aviation Administration and the mandates of federal law.

Suspected Unapproved Parts In The Aviation Industry: Consideration Of System Safety And Control, Steven J. Sletten
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
It is well known and highly touted that there is a historically high level of safety in U.S. air transportation. The American traveling public has come to expect this level of safety in the skies. Key elements in maintaining this high level of air safety are specific federal regulations, along with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) surveillance, inspection, and enforcement activities. The U.S. Code of Federal Regulations include a framework of rules governing the design, manufacture, and use of aviation products and parts. The rules are in place to assist the aviation industry in maintaining its excellent safety record, and serve …

Consumers are generally affected by packaging and naming of particular products. Take, for example, a product like shampoo. A few years ago, the brand Halsa was launched. While most people probably saw the label showing the girl with the beautiful hair, they were very likely also influenced by the name Halsa. Had they understood its meaning [Swedish = health], they would probably have had even more faith in the shampoo, but the enigmatic and unusual-sounding name created a favorable impression in them.

The purpose of the survey was to determine the size, scope, and status of the Illinois FBO industry. After two mailings, an overall response rate of 53 completed surveys (44.9%) was achieved. The respondent FBO's indicated an average: (a) nine separate aviation services, (b) 6.4 aircraft owned, (c) 19.8 people employed, (d) payroll under $250,000, (e) $500,000 or more in annual revenue, (f) over 21 years in business, and (g) 1.1 competing FBO's on the same …
Gender Differences In An Aviation Physiology Environment, Cass D. Howell
Gender Differences In An Aviation Physiology Environment, Cass D. Howell
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
Men still dominate flying by better than a ten to one ratio, but there is no question that female participation in all aspects of aviation has increased dramatically in the past decade, and will no doubt continue to do so in the future. Although women have been flying airplanes since 1910, little attention was paid to them in terms of suitability and adaptability to flight, as compared to their male counterparts, until recently. It wasn't until the 1980's, after Congress modified existing law to allow women into the flight programs of the military in large numbers, that studies to ascertain …

An Investigation Of Different Modeling Techniques For Autonomous Robot Navigation, Jedidiah Crandall
An Investigation Of Different Modeling Techniques For Autonomous Robot Navigation, Jedidiah Crandall
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
This research aims to give recommendations towards modeling the navigation control architectures for an autonomous rover designed for an unstructured, outdoors environment. These recommendations are equally applicable to other autonomous vehicles, such as aircraft or underwater vehicles. Many successful architectures for this application have been developed, but there is no common terminology for the discussion of robotics architectures and their properties in general. This paper suggests the use of terms borrowed from administrative theory to facilitate interdisciplinary dialog about the tradeoffs of various kinds of models for robotics and similar systems. Past approaches to modeling autonomous robot navigation architectures have …
