A Study Of The Effect Of Projective Drawings On The Hindsight Bias, Elizabeth A. Dufresne Jan 2000

A Study Of The Effect Of Projective Drawings On The Hindsight Bias, Elizabeth A. Dufresne

Open Access Master's Theses

This study examined the effect of including a human figure drawing on the hindsight bias among undergraduate psychology students. Six groups were given a description of a 15 year-old boy who was experiencing school difficulties. Some of these groups also were given outcome information suggesting that the boy's difficulties were due either to social-emotional problems or to learning problems. In addition, some groups also were given a human figure drawing made by the boy. Participants then assigned likelihood probabilities to the two outcomes. Results of non-parametric analyses showed the hindsight bias for only one of the six groups. In contrast, …

A Comparison Of Administration Procedures For The Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure: Flow-Charts Vs. Pen-Switching, Jessica Somerville Jan 2000

A Comparison Of Administration Procedures For The Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure: Flow-Charts Vs. Pen-Switching, Jessica Somerville

Open Access Master's Theses

The Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF) is commonly used to assess visuospatial skills, visuoconstruction, visual memory, and executive functioning. In order to capture the sequential process used while drawing the figure, the order of pen strokes needs to be recorded. Two traditional methods are used to record this information, the flow-chart method and the pen-switching method. Although it has been suggested that pen-switching may interfere with performance, to date, no research has been conducted to assess whether ROCF performance significantly differs due to administration method. As part of routine neuropsychological evaluation, 100 inpatients and outpatients were randomly assigned to either administration …

A Study Of Language Used In Magazine Reports Of Rape And Sexual Assault Trials, Laura B. Chorbajian Jan 2000

A Study Of Language Used In Magazine Reports Of Rape And Sexual Assault Trials, Laura B. Chorbajian

Open Access Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the descriptors used to describe victims and alleged perpetrators in recent articles about rape trials and sexual assault trials in popular U.S. magazines to determine whether they were significantly different in connotative meaning as perceived by the respondents. Forty-four articles were examined for descriptors. The ten most commonly used descriptors for the victims and the ten most commonly used descriptors for the alleged perpetrators were then rated on Osgood's semantic differential by 107 undergraduates from the University of Rhode Island. Results showed that descriptors for the victims and alleged perpetrators were found …

An Assessment Of Decisional Balance, Self Efficacy, And Condom Stages Of Change Among White And Minority Women, Shirley Amanda Gazabon

Open Access Master's Theses

Between 1992 and 1999, the number of persons living with AIDS increased in all groups of women in the United States. In terms of ethnicity, the number of African American and Hispanic American infected with HIV has increased tremendously. In order to address the HIV pandemic among ethnic women in the United States, systematic methods for studying condom use and HIV prevention are being developed and validated.

The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) has been postulated as an integrative and comprehensive model of intentional behavior change that incorporates process oriented variables in an effort to predict how and when people adopt healthy …

Understanding The Efficacy Of Residential Treatment For Female And Alaskan Native Adolescents: Outcome Study And Meta-Analysis, Kathleen Cady-Webster Jan 2000

Understanding The Efficacy Of Residential Treatment For Female And Alaskan Native Adolescents: Outcome Study And Meta-Analysis, Kathleen Cady-Webster

Open Access Master's Theses

Today adolescent violent crime and juvenile delinquency is an increasing problem in our society. Along with the high number of minority offenders, there is also evidence from state and local agencies that the number of female offenders is also increasing. Once youth enter the family court system, they are often adjudicated for treatment into a residential facility. There is little information available regarding the efficacy of these types of placement especially for female and minority problem youths. Phase I of this project involved the examination of such a facility utilizing a longitudinal study spanning four years of data collection. Year …

Relationship Of Maternal Age To Risk Factors And Infant Outcomes For Children Of Young Mothers, Candace A. Reynolds Jan 2000

Relationship Of Maternal Age To Risk Factors And Infant Outcomes For Children Of Young Mothers, Candace A. Reynolds

Open Access Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to broaden the field of research on the developmental risks associated with the infants of young mothers by identifying age-related differences within this group of mothers and their associated influences on children's outcomes. A sample of young mothers was developmentally separated into three maternal age groups: 13-15, 16-18, and 19-21. Data on the family's available resources, maternal utilization of social support, the environment of the home, and the infant's developmental progress at six months were combined to examine their relationship to maternal age. In addition, further analysis was completed to identify differences surrounding these …

The goal of this research project sought to evaluate resident's opinions concerning a variety of different developments, with each development representing specific elements of a proposed village center development in Western Cranston. The project utilized a technique developed by Anton Nelessen called Visual Preference Survey. VPS is a tool planners may use to present a vision of a plan to the public. It's meant to be used in the very preliminary stages of the public planning process, because this is when public participation is most important. In the context of this report, the idea is to garner public support by …

The Potential Role Of Rhode Island's Housing Authorities In Furthering Community Integration For People With Developmental Disabilities, Renee M. Saedlo Jan 2000

The Potential Role Of Rhode Island's Housing Authorities In Furthering Community Integration For People With Developmental Disabilities, Renee M. Saedlo

Open Access Master's Theses

This study discusses and examines the housing issues for people with developmental disabilities in Rhode Island. The current philosophy of housing for people with developmental disabilities focuses on the promotion of personal choice and the integration of this population into the community rather than living in an institutional setting. Due to the reliance of this population on supportive housing programs, housing authorities play a major role in successful integration. Currently, there is no information oriented toward housing authorities that explains their potential role in furthering the goals of community integration for people with developmental disabilities. To promote the active participation …

The Watershed Trail: Melville To The Glen, A Greenway Master Plan For The Town Of Portsmouth, Deidra J. Storti

Open Access Master's Theses

The Greenway Master Plan is a guide for developing a multi-user trail in the town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. This report provides a comprehensive approach to implementing a trail from Melville to The Glen, called The Watershed Trail. While it focuses on integrating important aspects of the natural and human environment for one segment of trail, the report could be used to direct the community in developing an island-wide system of various types of publicly accessible trails. The goal of developing the trail is multi-purposed. First, islanders have expressed a desire to develop off-road pathways that link their homes, shopping, …

Hydric Soil Patterns In Riparian Corridors Of The Glaciated Northeast: Groundtruthing The Soil Geographic Data Base (Ssurgo), Adam E. Rosenblatt Jan 2000

Hydric Soil Patterns In Riparian Corridors Of The Glaciated Northeast: Groundtruthing The Soil Geographic Data Base (Ssurgo), Adam E. Rosenblatt

Open Access Master's Theses

Riparian zones are lands that occur along stream boundaries. These zones vary widely in their potential to protect stream and estuarine waters from groundwater nitrate contamination. Past research has found that riparian sites with hydric soils (i.e., soils associated with wetlands) possess high groundwater nitrate removal potential, while nonhydric soils appear to have minimal removal rates. Although the presence of hydric riparian corridors is a critical clue to watershed functions, they often occur as narrow bands that are challenging to map. The potential for identifying these high value riparian zones through existing spatial data bases coupled with geographic information systems …

Hypothetical Origins Of Paleozoic Fossils From The Gulf Coastal Plain Of Arkansas, Karen Arbuckle

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A fauna of reworked Paleozoic fossils has been found in chert pebbles from the Gulf Coastal Plain in eastern Columbia County, Arkansas, although the nearest mapped exposure of Mississippian and Pennsylvanian rocks are fifty-five miles northward in the southern edge of the Ouachita Mountains. The surficial rocks at the collection site have been referred to the Claiborne Group of Eocene age by the authors of the geological map of Arkansas. Additional outcrops containing similar Paleozoic fossils have been found within a 15-mile radius. The fauna includes both lacy and twig-like bryozoans, articulate brachiopods, tabulate and rugose corals, stalked echinoderms, gastropods, …

Reaction Of Alpine-Borane With Aldehydes: Reactivity Rate Assessment By Observation Of The Disappearance Of The Carbonyl N - Pi* Peak By Uv-Visible Spectroscopy, Layla Bland, Michael J. Panigot Jan 2000

Reaction Of Alpine-Borane With Aldehydes: Reactivity Rate Assessment By Observation Of The Disappearance Of The Carbonyl N - Pi* Peak By Uv-Visible Spectroscopy, Layla Bland, Michael J. Panigot

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Due to an unexpectedly difficult reduction of indole-3-carbaldehyde and of isobutyraldehyde using the chiral reducing agent Alpine-Borane, the reactivity of several aliphatic, aromatic, and unsaturated aldehydes was investigated. This was done in order to determine whether there was a relationship between aldehyde structure and reduction rate. It was found that aliphatic aldehydes and aromatic aldehydes with no strongly electron-donating groups on the arene ring reduced faster than unsaturated aldehydes.
