A Two-Chain Path Integral Model Of Positronium, L. Larrimore, R. N. Mcfarland, P. A. Sterne, Amy Lisa Graves Dec 2000

A Two-Chain Path Integral Model Of Positronium, L. Larrimore, R. N. Mcfarland, P. A. Sterne, Amy Lisa Graves

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

We have used a path integral Monte Carlo technique to simulate positronium (Ps) in a cavity. The primitive propagator is used, with a pair of interacting chains representing the positron and electron. We calculate the energy and radial distribution function for Ps enclosed in a hard, spherical cavity, and the polarizability of the model Ps in the presence of an electrostatic field. We find that the positron distribution near the hard wall differs significantly from that for a single particle in a hard cavity. This leads to systematic deviations from predictions of free-volume models which treat Ps as an effective, …

The Federal-State Medicaid Match: An Ongoing Tug-Of-War Over Practice And Policy, Karen Matherlee Dec 2000

The Federal-State Medicaid Match: An Ongoing Tug-Of-War Over Practice And Policy, Karen Matherlee

National Health Policy Forum

Reviewing Medicaid match issues since the latter 1980s, this issue brief traces ways in which some states have used creative financing to get more Medicaid matching dollars than they otherwise would qualify for from the federal government. It explores the latest mechanism, states' use of so-called intergovernmental transfers of funds (to avoid established upper payment limits) to increase their matches, triggering efforts by the Senate Finance Committee and the federal Medicaid agency to ban such transfers.

Hydra vulgaris mesoglea is a primitive basement membrane that also exhibits some features of an interstitial matrix. We have characterized cDNAs that encode the full-length hydra α1(IV) chain. The 5169-base pair transcript encodes a protein of 1723 amino acids, including an interrupted 1455-residue collagenous domain and a 228-residue C-terminal noncollagenous domain. N-terminal sequence analyses of collagen IV peptides suggest the molecule is homotrimeric. Denatured hydra type IV collagen protein occurs as dimers and higher order aggregates held together by nonreducible cross-links. Hydra collagen IV exhibits no functional evidence for the presence of a 7 S domain. Type IV collagen is …

Coherent Reflection Of Acoustic Plane Wave From Rough Interfaces In A Stratified Random Fluid Medium, Jin-Yuan Liu, Shiahn-Wern Shyue, Chen-Fen Huang Dec 2000

Coherent Reflection Of Acoustic Plane Wave From Rough Interfaces In A Stratified Random Fluid Medium, Jin-Yuan Liu, Shiahn-Wern Shyue, Chen-Fen Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Coherent reflection of an acoustic plane wave from rough interfaces in a horizontally-stratified medium, within which the sound-speed distribution subject to a small and random perturbation, is considered in this paper. The general formulation based upon the theory for rough-interface scattering in a stratified medium, in conjunction with that for random medium is derived. The Green’s function for a random medium bounded by two surfaces, which serves as generic solution of the problem, is obtained. The formulation is then applied to a simplified seabed environment to study the effects of surface roughness and medium inhomogenieties on the coherent reflection. The …

The Biology, Life History, And Taxonomy Of Celastrina Neglectamajor (Lycaenidae: Polyommatinae)., Harry Pavulaan, David M. Wright

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

The biology and life history of Celastrina neglectamajor is described. This lycaenid butterfly was first described from West Virginia, United States by 19th century lepidopterist, William H. Edwards, as a redescription of Lycaena pseudargiolus (Boisduval & Le Conte). Edwards provided evidence of its unique late spring flight, Appalachian affinity, and larval host Cimicifuga racemosa (Ranunculaceae). Edwards and subsequent authors, most notably Samuel Scudder of New England, treated it as an infrasubspecific form of the common eastern Celastrina ladon. In 1908 Tutt applied the form name neglectamajor, describing it from one of Edwards’ 1884 figures. For nearly a century, …

Rojas-Reyes V. Ins, 235 F. 3d 115 - Court Of Appeals, 2nd Circuit 2000, New York Law School

Circuit Court Opinions

Petitioner Lucina-Rojas Reyes ("Rojas") petitions for review of an order of the Board of Immigration Appeals ("BIA") denying her motion to reopen her deportation proceedings. Rojas entered the country illegally in 1987 and has worked and lived in Queens, New York since that time. Respondent Immigration and Naturalization Service ("INS") instituted deportation proceedings against Rojas with the service of an order to show cause on September 20, 1993. During those proceedings, Rojas applied for a form of relief from deportation then known as "suspension of deportation." In a decision rendered on March 4, 1996, an Immigration Judge ("IJ") denied Rojas' …

Coherence Of Internal Tide Modulations Along The Hawaiian Ridge, Gary T. Mitchum, Stephen M. Chiswell Dec 2000

Coherence Of Internal Tide Modulations Along The Hawaiian Ridge, Gary T. Mitchum, Stephen M. Chiswell

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Long time series of sea level from tide gauges along the north side of the Hawaiian Ridge and shorter series of dynamic heights inferred from inverted echo sounders moored just north of the main Hawaiian Islands are examined for evidence of internal tides at the M2 frequency. We find that the amplitudes and phases of the M2 tidal components have low-frequency variability, which is consistent with a superposition of an internal tide with the larger barotropic tide. Further, the low-frequency variability is correlated with low-frequency changes in the depth of the pycnocline, which suggests a simple physical mechanism …

Faculty Publications

Soft-x-ray fluorescence measurements have been performed on a single crystal of the organic antiferromagnet 2,4,6-triphenylverdazyl. Resonant and nonresonant C Kα and N Kα (2p → 1s transition) x-ray emission spectra (XES) were measured and compared with x-ray photoelectron valence band spectra and deMon density-functional theory calculations. It is shown that intramolecular interactions are much stronger than intermolecular ones and give the main contribution to the formation of C 2p density of states. We present evidence of a delocalization of unpaired N 2p electrons over the verdazyl ring. The excitation energy dependence of C Kα and N Kα XES observed below …

Fractional Derivatives, John M. Beach

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, the reader will not find a study of any kind; there is no methodology, questionnaire, interview, test, or data analysis. This thesis is simply a research paper on fractional derivatives, a topic that I have found to be fascinating. The reader should be delighted by a short history of the topic in Chapter 1, where he/she will read about the contributions made by some of the great mathematicians from the last three centuries.

In Chapter 2 the reader will find an intuitive approach for finding the general fractional derivative for functions such as eax, x …

Qualitative Modeling For Magnetization Curve, Pei-Hwa Huang, Yu-Shuo Chang Dec 2000

Qualitative Modeling For Magnetization Curve, Pei-Hwa Huang, Yu-Shuo Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper studies the derivation of a qualitative description for the magnetization curve of saturable magnetic materials. From a set of numerical input-output data, a fuzzy model, which is a collection of fuzzy IF-THEN rules for describing the studied system, is first constructed for the magnetization curve. A procedure consisting of a fuzzy clustering method and a rule processing algorithm is then employed for processing the constructed fuzzy modeling rules to extract the qualitative properties of the curve. The proposed approach is objective in that it can yield the system qualitative features without domain experts’ knowledge. An example is demonstrated …
