Design And Construction Of A Low Earth Orbit Satellite Ground Station, Eric Darnel Dec 2000

Design And Construction Of A Low Earth Orbit Satellite Ground Station, Eric Darnel

Engineering

This thesis describes the design and construction of a satellite ground station constructed in support of the Citizen Explorer Program. The University of Alaska Fairbanks was chosen to participate in this program due to its latitude that gives it excellent access to polar-orbiting satellites. The advantage that higher latitudes have in accessing low earth orbiting satellites is examined. It is demonstrated that Fairbanks, Alaska, has roughly twice the access to polar orbiting satellites than the mid-latitudes of the contiguous US. Link budgets for the communication system were developed, which led to the construction of helical antennas to communicate with the …

Design And Simulation Of Flight Computer Using Vhdl For Arim-1 Sounding Rocket Payload, Anirban Chowdhury

Engineering

Atmospheric Refractive Index Measurement-1 (ARIM-1) is a sounding rocket payload designed to collect information regarding atmospheric turbulence. ARIM-1 is designed to make high-resolution (4 samples per centimeter) differential temperature measurements of the atmosphere to determine the structure of atmospheric turbulence and hence it's refractive index. The rocket's flight computer schedules and manages data acquisition from various payload sub-systems and transmits this acquired data to the ground station. The goal of this work is to develop a custom design for this flight computer using Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language (VHDL). This thesis presents simulation and hardware requirements for …

Experimental And Economic Evaluation Of Gtl Fluid Flow Properties And Effect On Taps, Hariharan Ramakrishnan Dec 2000

Experimental And Economic Evaluation Of Gtl Fluid Flow Properties And Effect On Taps, Hariharan Ramakrishnan

Engineering

In this study, procedures are outlined to recondition and sample crude oil from high-pressure Welker cylinders. Standard laboratory procedures are developed to determine viscosity and density properties of crude oil, GTL and their mixtures. The steps needed to ensure Quality Assurance and Project Plan (QAPjp) is given in detail. A calibration macro is written to automate viscometer calibration calculations. A preliminary economic model is developed to evaluate GTL transportation options. Viscosity and density are measured for various samples at different temperatures. The reproducibility of the results is found to be within 5%. Batching is more preferable then blending for the …

Lived Ethnicity: Identity, Consciousness, And Discursive Practice In Grayling, Alaska, Brenden Raymond-Yakoubian Dec 2000

Lived Ethnicity: Identity, Consciousness, And Discursive Practice In Grayling, Alaska, Brenden Raymond-Yakoubian

Anthropology

This thesis is an analysis of data collected from academic, archival, and ethnographic inquiries into the lives, culture, and history of the residents of Grayling, Alaska. The main argument forwarded in this thesis is that forms of discursive practice provide a means, emic and etic, for critically engaging the historically and locally constructed web of meanings that inscribe and inform the lived social reality of ethnic identity of ethnic identity and consciousness in Grayling. Using a communicative-discursive theoretical framework, influences and forces which inform this 'lived ethnicity, ' the strands of the web, are understood dialogically - as discursive forms …

Mitochondrial Dna Haplotype Genealogies And Population Histories In The Late Pleistocene: Contrasts Of Pink Salmon Broodyears, Dmitri Yurievich Churikov Dec 2000

Mitochondrial Dna Haplotype Genealogies And Population Histories In The Late Pleistocene: Contrasts Of Pink Salmon Broodyears, Dmitri Yurievich Churikov

Fisheries

Seven segments of mtDNA, comprising 97% of the mitochondrial genome, were PCR-amplified and examined for restriction site variation using 13 restriction endonucleases in three Oncorhynchus species: pink (O. gorbuscha), chum (O. keta), and sockeye (O. nerka) salmon. Multiple haplotypes, but shallow mtDNA trees were observed for each species. 'Star-like' structures indicating historical population explosions were observed in haplotype genealogies. Given reasonable rates of mtDNA sequence evolution, this may reflect recolonization of vast areas in Alaska after the last (Wisconsinian) or preceding (Illinoian) glacier retreats. The phylogeographic survey of 18 Alaskan and Eastern Asian pink salmon populations revealed a distinct phylogeographic …

The Ecology Of The Arctic Char And The Dolly Varden In The Becharof Lake Drainage, Alaska, Brendan P. Scanlon Dec 2000

The Ecology Of The Arctic Char And The Dolly Varden In The Becharof Lake Drainage, Alaska, Brendan P. Scanlon

Fisheries

Becharof Lake is home to both Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) and the closely related Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma), two species known not only to be similar in appearance but also to exhibit similar life histories. The body morphometry, otolith microchemistry, and stomach contents of both species were studied in fish collected from May to September 1998. Morphometric and meristic analysis revealed clear separation in body structure between the two species, as well as potential sub-populations within each species. Otolith microchemistry revealed incidences of anadromy and non-anadromy in both species. Stomach content analysis revealed a broad feeding niche but smaller ranges …

Juvenile Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasi) Feeding Ecology In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Robert James Foy Dec 2000

Juvenile Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasi) Feeding Ecology In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Robert James Foy

Fisheries

Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) are commercially exploited along the Asiatic and North American Pacific Ocean continental shelves. In Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska, herring were commercially important until a year class failures in 1993. A noticeable lack of life history information on juveniles was available in PWS to use for studies addressing the failed recruitment. This study describes the seasonal herring feeding ecology in PWS nursery areas from 1996 to 1998. Zooplankton from 535 vertical tows and herring diet data from 3,282 stomach contents were collected from Eaglek, Simpson, Whale and Zaikof Bays. Zooplankton species composition was dominated by small …

Motion And Calving At Leconte Glacier, Alaska, Shad O'Neel Dec 2000

Motion And Calving At Leconte Glacier, Alaska, Shad O'Neel

Theses (Unassigned)

An analysis of motion and calving in the terminus region of LeConte Glacier delineates controls which are important to tidewater glacier stability. Ice velocities in this region are quite high; at the terminus they exceed 27 m d⁻¹. Our analysis reveals fluctuations in velocity that are forced by ocean tides, surface melt and precipitation. However, the overall velocity is steady over seasonal time intervals. LeConte's terminus position varied substantially, even given this steady ice influx, establishing a correlation between the calving flux and the terminus position (flux out). Although this correlation is largely numerical, the occurrence of calving events is …

A Qualitative Analysis Of The Relationship Between Religion And Women's Self Development, Bertha Elia Rodarte Dec 2000

A Qualitative Analysis Of The Relationship Between Religion And Women's Self Development, Bertha Elia Rodarte

Psychology

This study explored women's spiritual experiences and the effects of patriarchal religions on women's lives. To understand how patriarchal beliefs affect women, a sample of twenty-one women answered open-ended questions about their self-perceptions, images of God, discrepancies between religious education and beliefs in feminist ideology, and views of other women. The participants' experiences describe their spiritual self as Explorers, Adherents, or Liberated women. The research revealed that seventy-one percent of the women categorized as Explorers had a discrepancy between their religious and feminist belief systems. To cope they used emotion focused/avoidance, problem-oriented/avoidance and problem-oriented/active coping strategies. Both the Adherent and …

A Qualitative Study Of The Women And Children's Residential Treatment Center Substance Abuse Treatment Program, Phillip Elwyn Gilbert Dec 2000

A Qualitative Study Of The Women And Children's Residential Treatment Center Substance Abuse Treatment Program, Phillip Elwyn Gilbert

Psychology

This thesis presents the results of a formative process evaluation of the Fairbanks Native Association Women and Children's Residential Treatment Center abuse program using interviews, participant observation, and grounded theory methods of qualitative research. Eight clients and eight staff were interviewed across the domains of culture, spirituality and family. A theory of program operation emanated from and was grounded in the data: program functioning was significantly affected by the relationship perceived by the clients to exist between themselves, (their needs, values, desires, goals and world view) and the program's goals and priorities.

Use Of Beaufort Sea As Feeding Habitat By Bowhead Whales (Balaena Mysticetus) As Indicated By Stable Isotope Ratios, Sang Heon Lee Dec 2000

Use Of Beaufort Sea As Feeding Habitat By Bowhead Whales (Balaena Mysticetus) As Indicated By Stable Isotope Ratios, Sang Heon Lee

Marine Biology

The feeding habitats of the Western Arctic bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) during summer are generally known, but the precise amounts of food consumed from the eastern Beaufort Sea (EBS) are not known. [Alpha]13C and [alpha]15N ratios in whale tissues were used to estimate the amounts of food required from EBS. The feeding strategies of adults and subadults were also compared. For all whales, the [alpha]13C values in muscle sampled in fall were not significantly different from those in the muscle sampled in spring, indicating most food of adults and subadults comes from the Bering/Chukchi seas. The ¹³C data from baleen …

A Retrospective Assessment Of Primary Productivity On The Bering And Chukchi Sea Shelves Using Stable Isotope Ratios In Seabirds, Grace Elizabeth Abromaitis Dec 2000

A Retrospective Assessment Of Primary Productivity On The Bering And Chukchi Sea Shelves Using Stable Isotope Ratios In Seabirds, Grace Elizabeth Abromaitis

Marine Biology

Recent declines of marine mammal seabird populations in the Bering Sea have raised the question of whether the changes are caused by fishing pressure or a decrease in ecosystem carrying capacity. Stable carbon (¹³C⁾ and nitrogen (¹⁵N⁾ isotope ratios in Thick⁻billed Murre muscle and feathers were used as indicators of changing seasonal primary production. ¹³C values in phytoplankton vary directly with growth rates and are passed up the food web to consumers. Muscle and feather ¹³C values decreased over the period 1976-1998 suggesting a decline in Bering/Chukchi continental shelf primary production. Carbon isotope ratios in murres were correlated with bowhead …

A Comparison Of Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka) In Two Climate Regimes In The North Pacific Ocean Using Stable Carbon And Nitrogren Isotope Ratios, Franklin Robert Satterfield Dec 2000

A Comparison Of Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka) In Two Climate Regimes In The North Pacific Ocean Using Stable Carbon And Nitrogren Isotope Ratios, Franklin Robert Satterfield

Marine Biology

This study explores how the climate shift in the late 1970's impacted sockeye salmon feeding. Stable isotope ratios (¹³C and ¹⁵N) of recent muscle and scale tissues from five mature salmon species are highly correlated (R²=0.96 and 0.91, respectively), validating the use of archived scales for retrospective analysis. These data suggest a trophic separation by species with chinook occupying the highest level, followed by coho with some degree of overlap among sockeye, pink and chum at the lowest level. Archived scales from four different sockeye stocks from Kodiak Island and Southeast region were analyzed over the last 34 years to …
