Bananagrams 11, Edmund Conti Nov 2000

Bananagrams 11, Edmund Conti

Word Ways

Bananagrams-anagrams to drive you bananas-consist of rhymed couplets, each one containing a pair of anagrams to be solved. One of the rhyming words will always be an anagram, and the couplet itself will offer clues to help solve the anagram. Answers can be found in Answers and Solutions at the end of the issue.

The Anchor, Volume 114.08: November 1, 2000, Hope College

The Anchor: 2000

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

Study Objective

To determine the effect of oxandrolone administration on nutritional and clinical outcomes after multiple trauma.

Design

Prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Setting. Level 1 trauma center in a university teaching hospital.

Patients

Sixty-two patients requiring enteral nutrition, 60 of whom completed the study.

Intervention

Patients were randomized to receive either oxandrolone 10 mg or placebo twice/day for a maximum of 28 days.

Measurements and Main Results

Total urinary nitrogen, prealbumin, nitrogen balance, total body water, and body cell mass were measured on day 1 of enteral nutrition and then at day 7, day 10, and study exit. Patients …

Pegram V Herdrich: Implications For Consumer Protections In Managed Care, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Joel B. Teitelbaum Nov 2000

Pegram V Herdrich: Implications For Consumer Protections In Managed Care, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Joel B. Teitelbaum

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

This Report, prepared for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, provides a brief overview of the United States Supreme Court's landmark decision in Pegram v Herdrich (hereinafter referred to as Herdrich). This report begins with a brief overview of the debate in the courts over how to distinguish between legal challenges to the conduct of managed care companies in which all state remedies are preempted by ERISA and those that may proceed under state law. It then summarizes the facts of the Herdrich case and the Court's holding. The report concludes with a discussion of the implications of …

Paramagnetic Meissner Effect In Nb Disks, Petru S. Fodor, Lowell E. Wenger Nov 2000

Paramagnetic Meissner Effect In Nb Disks, Petru S. Fodor, Lowell E. Wenger

Physics Faculty Publications

Further details of the zero-field-cooled-magnetization and field-cooled-magnetization results on Nb disks exhibiting the paramagnetic Meissner effect (PME) are described. These studies indicate that two well-defined temperatures can be associated with features in the magnetization results. The higher characteristic temperature Tu is correlated with appearance of the paramagnetic moment and is strongly dependent upon the process used in forming the disk-shaped geometry of these Nb samples. The lower temperature Tp is associated with the “intrinsic coupling” of the interior Nb platelets. These latest results are shown to be consistent with the flux compression model for the appearance of the PME.

Burundi: A Critical Security Perspective, Eli Stamnes, Richard Wyn Jones Nov 2000

Burundi: A Critical Security Perspective, Eli Stamnes, Richard Wyn Jones

Peace and Conflict Studies

In the last few years Critical Security Studies (CSS) has emerged as a new approach to the academic study of security. This article argues that its genesis is best understood as a reaction to two developments, namely ‘real world’ changes after the end of the Cold War and the far-reaching philosophical debates that have recently been taking place within the social sciences. The authors argue for a conceptualisation of CSS based on an explicit commitment to human emancipation. They then illustrate their preferred understanding of security through a discussion of Burundi. This case study not only illustrates the theoretical claims …

Monitoring Bacterial Transport By Stable Isotope Enrichment Of Cells, William Holben, Peggy H. Ostrom Nov 2000

Monitoring Bacterial Transport By Stable Isotope Enrichment Of Cells, William Holben, Peggy H. Ostrom

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Understanding the transport and behavior of bacteria in the environment has broad implications in diverse areas, ranging from agriculture to groundwater quality, risk assessment, and bioremediation. The ability to reliably track and enumerate specific bacterial populations in the context of native communities and environments is key to developing this understanding. We report a novel bacterial tracking approach, based on altering the stable carbon isotope value (delta C-13) Of bacterial cells, which provides specific and sensitive detection and quantification of those cells in environmental samples. This approach was applied to the study of bacterial transport in saturated porous media. The transport …

The Computational Complexity Of N-K Fitness Functions, Alden H. Wright, Richard K. Thompson, Jian Zhang Nov 2000

The Computational Complexity Of N-K Fitness Functions, Alden H. Wright, Richard K. Thompson, Jian Zhang

Computer Science Faculty Publications

N-K fitness landscapes have been widely used as examples and test functions in the field of evolutionary computation. Thus, the computational complexity of these landscapes as optimization problems is of interest. We investigate the computational complexity of the problem of optimizing the N-K fitness functions and related fitness functions. We give an algorithm to optimize adjacent-model N-K fitness functions which is polynomial in N. We show that the decision problem corresponding to optimizing random-model N-K fitness functions is NP-complete for K > 1 and is polynomial for K = 1. If the restriction that the ith component function depends …
